One of the most important things to happen in Persuasion, Carrie Cracknell’s new Netflix adaptation of Jane Austen’s final novel, has already gone down by the time the movie starts. Anne Elliot (Dakota Johnson) had once been in love — and in the enviable position to do something about it. She chose not to. Rather, she was persuaded. The man who had her heart, a sailor named Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), was of a lower class. Their union would have been imprudent by 19th-century English standards. So she dumped him.

Classic story of a young woman talked out of marrying her true love is turned into a smirking, heavy-handed romcom
Jane Austen’s calm, subtle novel gets the Fleabag treatment in this smirking romcom; it has more wrong notes than an inebriated squadron of harpists, including everything but a last-minute rush in a barouche to Bath airport. Our demure protagonist Anne Elliot is forever doing supercilious takes and wry monologues to camera, taking despairing swigs from a bottle of red wine in private, occasionally nursing a quirky pet rabbit, and at the end (unforgivably) gives us a wink to seal the deal of our adoringly complicit approval. The final wedding scene invents for us a cutesy comic twist involving two distinct characters whose status and purpose this film gets very wrong.

Netflix has released the first trailer for “Persuasion,” the upcoming period film starring Dakota Johnson, based on the classic 1817 Jane Austen novel.
Published after Austen’s death, “Persuasion” was the final completed work of the writer, and is considered one of her most mature and sophisticated novels. The story revolves around Anne Elliot (played by Dakota Johnson in the film), an isolated 27-year-old struggling to move on after she broke her engagement with Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), after being persuaded by family friend Lady Russell (Nikki Amuka-Bird).
After seven years, the two come back into each other’s orbit when Anne’s family rents their home to his sister and her husband. Anne quickly finds herself caught in a love triangle between her former fiancé and her cousin, William Elliot (Henry Golding), who will inherit her father Walter’s (Richard E. Grant) estate. Dakota Johnson is the latest actress to embody one of Jane Austen’s leading ladies in the trailer for the upcoming Netflix adaptation of “Persuasion.”
Johnson plays Anne Elliot, an overlooked middle daughter who is nonetheless incredibly insightful and clever — if easily persuaded. Surrounded by her entitled relatives, she is on her own when faced with the return of the dashing, self-made Captain Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), with whom she broke off her engagement nearly a decade prior at the behest of those around her deeming it a degrading match.
The trailer, which you can watch above, is full of heartfelt and also hilarious moments as Johnson’s Anne navigates her rekindling romance, as well as the emergence of a potential new romance with William Elliot (Henry Golding).

Coffy/Foxy Brown/Friday Foster
Coffy and Foxy Brown written and directed by Jack Hill
Friday Foster written by Orville H. Hampton, directed by Arthur Marks
USA, 1973/1974/1975
Olive Films recently released several Blaxploitation titles on Blu-ray for the first time, all on the same day. This included the Fred Williamson-starring Hammer, from 1972, as well as three Pam Grier films: Coffy (1973), Foxy Brown (1974), and Friday Foster (1975). Hammer isn’t a particular favorite, but these latter three were most welcome, especially Coffy, which is quite possibly the greatest of all Blaxploitation features, even better than the more popular Shaft (1971) and Super Fly (1972). As much as anything, these three releases are notable for showcasing Grier at her finest during a period of immensely enjoyable work and exceptional productivity—15 films from her minor debut in Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970) to Friday Foster. Around these films, she also starred in several other...

Texas Chainsaw continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off. In Newt, Texas, people have been going missing without a trace for decades. Years later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young girl, Heather (Daddario), discovers that she has inherited a sprawling Texas estate from an unknown grandmother.

On a stifling and sticky August morning in Shreveport, Louisiana, Dread Central arrived on the set of Texas Chainsaw 3D to be greeted by an exact replica of the Sawyer House located in the middle of a dried up and desolate field in an abandoned area of a local Army base that felt appropriately untouched by time.
For someone who can still vividly remember the very first time she watched Tobe Hooper's 1974 original classic at the ripe age of 8 years old, standing in front of the iconic dwelling brought back waves of chilling nostalgia, which is something you don't necessarily experience while visiting the set of a brand-new flick all that often.
As we head up the dusty trail into the house, the inside of the Sawyer home is just as remarkable as the outside- production designer William Elliott painstakingly recreated every minute detail right down to the chicken...

Growing up on a horse farm in Iowa, and still living on one, is as central to William Elliott Whitmore’s persona as Bruce Springsteen’s Jersey upbringing is to his. Of course, Whitmore is nowhere near as accomplished as Springsteen—not that it keeps Whitmore from channeling the Boss somewhat on his eighth full-length, Field Songs, a procession of hollered, homespun busking that follows in Nebraska’s heavy footsteps. But pigeonholing Whitmore by his influences is as shortsighted as doing so by his rural roots. His voice, an increasingly formidable piece of weaponry, reached its apparent apotheosis in 2009 ...

You gotta give it to them: Anti- has a knack for signing artists with a unique voice. Whether is Tom Waits or William Elliott Whitmore, they've managed to grab hold of personalities that truly offer some imagination to the general singer-songwriter category. Jolie Holland is among one of my favorites, where her odd warble and emotive narratives seem to tumble without effort and, unlike kindred Lucinda Williams, I never wonder if she's ever drunk when she records. She always seems to be "on." And she's back with a new album, deliciously titled "Pint of Blood" [passes out], due June 28. The...

Britain's Queen Elizabeth has sent a dog from her private kennels to Canada. The 83-year-old monarch's son Prince Edward escorted the yellow Labrador retriever from the queen's Sandringham estate in east England to Calgary, where it was presented to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (Rcmp). The 16-month old dog - whose full name is Kenside Wallow of Sandringham - behaved appallingly when she was led onstage, refusing to sit and straining on her leash so she could sniff Edward's trousers. Rcmp Commissioner William Elliott was delighted with the dog - nicknamed Suzanna, after the Muriel Denison's popular 1936 book 'Susannah of the Mounties' - which was a gift to symbolise Canada's "special relationship" with the British royal family. Prince Edward...

William Elliott Whitmore needed a change of pace. After concluding his Southern Records trilogy, a series of albums steeped in country-folk and Delta blues variants, through which the musician and humble horse-farmer worked through his grief over the death of his parents, he retreated home to his cabin in Iowa to listen to the coyotes howl. He didn't know if he had anything left to say; his songwriting had been cathartic, but the despair he once felt was turning to disgust. With deep roots in the punk rock community, he'd spent years touring with bands whose audiences had few reference points for music caked in Mississippi River mud, and after signing to Anti- Records (home to musical outlaws like Merle Haggard and Tom Waits) he knew he wouldn’t make a punk rock album,...
