- Evelyn Ellis was born on February 2, 1894 in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. She was an actress, known for The Lady from Shanghai (1947), The Joe Louis Story (1953) and A Son of Satan (1924). She died on June 5, 1958 in Saranac Lake, New York, USA.
- Played three different characters all named Bess, although two of them were called "Bessie" onscreen.
- Originated the role of Crown's Bess in the play 'Porgy,' written by Dorothy Heyward and DuBose Heyward, when it premiered on Broadway in 1927 under the direction of Rouben Mamoulian. She returned to the role in a 1929 revival, also directed by Mamoulian.
