Update: President Joe Biden, speaking to attendees at tonight’s Los Angeles fundraiser, said that Donald Trump “is dragging us back to the past and not leading us to the future.”
“We stand with the truth and we are going to defeat him and his lies,” Biden said at the event, according to a pool report. The event was at the home of Haim Saban, but he was not there after testing positive for Covid, nor was the other main co-host, Casey Wasserman, who also tested positive.
In his remarks, which lasted about 15 minutes, Biden presented a contrast between himself and Trump, as donors have been calling for the campaign to sharpen its attacks on the president’s likely rival.
Biden also talked of the death of Alexei Navalny, blaming it on Vladimir Putin. He called it “outrageous” that Trump has not condemned the Russian leader.

Lenny Kravitz is scheduled to perform on Friday when President Joe Biden headlines his first reelection fundraiser in Los Angeles, according to the invite.
The event is hosted by designer Michael Smith and James Costos, the former U.S. ambassador to Spain, with a list of co-hosts that include Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, Martha Karsh and Wendy Schmidt. First Lady Jill Biden and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also are scheduled to appear.
This will be the president’s first trek to Los Angeles for a fundraising swing since announcing reelection in April. He skipped Los Angeles during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike, out of concern over raising money at the time of the work stoppage.
Others chairing or hosting the event include Ted Boutrous and Helen Boutrous, Rick Caruso and Tina Caruso, Peter Chernin and Megan Chernin, Morgan Cox and Derrall Hill Jr., John Emerson and Kimberly Marteau Emerson,...

Harry Sloan, the media investor and former CEO of MGM Studios, is among President Joe Biden’s appointees to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council.
The White House announced a list of new member to the council that also included Kimberly Marteau Emerson, the lawyer and human rights advocate, and former Rep. Ted Deutch, now the CEO of the American Jewish Committee.
The council was established in 1980 to commemorate the Holocaust and raise money for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. When the museum opened in 1993, the council became the governing board of trustees of the museum.
Since he left MGM in 2011, Sloan has founded seven special purpose acquisition companies that raised more than $5 billion. Above: 1919 Swedish poster for Out West. Design by Eric Rohman.I’ve recently come across a little known, rather brief but quite extraordinary chapter in illustrated movie poster history, thanks to the poster department of Heritage Auctions. Just over one hundred years ago in Sweden, one distribution company or state agency seems to have commissioned an astonishing series of posters for imported American silent films that to today’s eyes seem both retro and modern at the same time (some of them could be mistaken for Mondo designs). They have been popping up for auction at Heritage over the past few years, reaching prices as high as 4,320 for Out West (above) and as low as 73 for the lovely Kingdom of Youth seen below. In fact there are a number coming up for auction next month and bidding begins next week. The posters are all 2- or 3-color linocut designs and...

Ernst Lubitsch: The movies' lost 'Touch.' Ernst Lubitsch movies on TCM: Classics of a bygone era Ernst Lubitsch and William Cameron Menzies were Turner Classic Movies' “stars” on Jan. 28, '16. (This is a fully revised and expanded version of a post published on that day.) Lubitsch had the morning/afternoon, with seven films; Menzies had the evening/night, also with seven features. (TCM's Ernst Lubitsch schedule can be found further below.) The forgotten 'Touch' As a sign of the times, Ernst Lubitsch is hardly ever mentioned whenever “connoisseurs” (between quotes) discuss Hollywood movies of the studio era. But why? Well, probably because The Lubitsch Touch is considered passé at a time when the sledgehammer approach to filmmaking is deemed “fresh,” “innovative,” “cool,” and “daring” – as if a crass lack of subtlety in storytelling were anything new. Minus the multimillion-dollar budgets, the explicit violence and gore, and the overbearing smugness passing for hipness,...

Four big-time Hollywood donors are on Barack Obama's shortlist for ambassadorships, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The new report claims White House decorator Michael Smith, money manager John Emerson, Tennis Channel executive Ken Solomon and philanthropist Colleen Bell are among those being considered for the diplomatic assignments. All are either based in Los Angeles and/or have strong ties to the entertainment sector.
A number of other entertainment and media figures have already been floated. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour -- one of the campaign's most determined surrogates -- is rumored to be interested in a position in the U.K. or France (and even Donald Trump is a fan of the idea).
The Obama campaign received heavy support from the entertainment industry, with celebrities from Jay-z to Harvey Weinstein coming through in big ways for the President's reelection bid.
Some of Obama's top donors, however, are unlikely to have time for an ambassadorship.

President Barack Obama wrapped up a two-day fundraising swing through Southern California Thursday, having collected $4 million during a trio of events designed to cement his reelection campaign’s ties with younger voters and the area’s business and legal communities. The Democratic National Committee’s Southern California finance chairman, John Emerson and Ken Solomon, confirmed the total to The Hollywood Reporter. The complete breakdown is yet to be released, but in all likelihood only a portion of that sum came from Hollywood sources.
