Producers Bruce Hendricks and Galen Walker have optioned the rights to Stanley Kubrick’s “Lunatic at Large,” one of three unmade Kubrick screenplays discovered in the film director’s library after his death in March 1999. Variety first reported the news. While plot details for “Lunatic at Large” are a mystery, Hendricks and Walker describe Kubrick’s script as a “film noir thriller in keeping with other collaborations between Kubrick and his frequent collaborator, screenwriter Jim Thompson.” Kubrick and Thompson’s shared filmography includes the 1956 film noir “The Killing,” plus “Paths of Glory” and “Spartacus.”
“The opportunity to bring a Stanley Kubrick project to the screen after so many years is a dream come true,” Walker said in a statement. “We look forward to making a film in keeping with his unique style and vision.”
Hendricks added, “Stanley Kubrick was an enormous influence on so many directors, and we are honored...

Producers Bruce Hendricks and Galen Walker have optioned the rights to the late Stanley Kubrick’s archival project “Lunatic at Large” and plan to adapt it into feature film.
The project was one of three film stories that were found in Kubrick’s library after he died in 1999. Kubrick, whose seminal filmography includes “2001: A Space Odyssey,” ” Dr. Strangelove,” “The Shining” and “Eyes Wide Shut,” had intended to direct “Lunatic at Large” at some point.
Plot details are under wraps, but producers described it as a film-noir thriller in keeping with other collaborations between Kubrick and his frequent collaborator, screenwriter Jim Thompson. Production is slated to begin in fall 2021.

Hey, guys, we need to raise money, so let's put on a show!
That's the gist of "The Music Teacher," Hallmark Channel's first movie musical, premiering Saturday, Aug. 11. The plot has been around forever, but that does not make it any less endearing or any more believable.
Those who love musicals will get a kick out of it. And those who love them know certain elements are a given -- at least two people who can't stand each other will fall in love, the bad guys will be shown up, and all will end well.
Annie Potts ("Gcb," "Designing Women") sings for the first time on camera in the role of no-nonsense teacher Alyson Daley, who has turned troubled teens around with an after-school musical theater program.
"I hadn't sung in a long time," Potts tells Zap2it. "I used to do a lot of musical theater, and then I...

Looking to build on the success of Fox's Glee, the Hallmark Channel has set The Music Teacher, a two-hour movie set to star Annie Potts and feature original songs and lyrics from a former Madonna composer. Music Teacher revolves around Alyson Daley (Potts), a high school music teacher who is on the brink of losing her beloved school music program because of district budget cuts. In an effort to spare the program, Daley's former students band together to stage a musical to raise money to keep the program alive. Composer Alan Ett, whose credits include Madonna: Truth or Dare

Man on Wire
Photo: Magnolia Pictures I would say Man on Wire as well as Wall-e are pretty much the only two films I feel are a lock for Oscars come February 22 in Best Documentary and Best Animated Feature respectively. Of course Kung Fu Panda is knocking on Wall-e's door after the Annie Award nominations and one cannot count out the potential for Waltz with Bashir to do what Persepolis could not last year - knock Pixar off its high horse as an Academy Award sure bet. Tying with Man on Wire, the best reviewed film of all-time at Rotten Tomatoes, as best feature documentary is a pretty good start. Of course, being a best documentary and being best animated film is hardly an equal comparison, but buzz is buzz as the International Documentary Association handed out their awards on Friday, December 5 awarding the best docs of 2008. The votes for top honors at the 2008 International Documentary Association (Ida) Awards were split between two very different docs: Man on Wire, about the whimsical Frenchman who walked a tightrope between the Twin Towers in 1974; and Waltz with Bashir, a memoir of life in war-torn Lebanon that's completely animated.
The Ida Awards were held Friday night in Los Angeles, hosted by everyone's favorite doc-maker Morgan Spurlock (perhaps a consolation prize for his own 2008 film, Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden?, not being nominated). The other nominees for the top prize, called the Distinguished Feature Award, were Kassim the Dream, Stranded: I've Come from a Plane That Crashed on the Mountains, and Young@Heart. That last one took home a separate prize, the Alan Ett Music Documentary Award.

- Put a smile on your face and some beat into your step Young@Heart and eco-activist docu portrait Burning the Future: Coal in America are among the early bird winners for this year’s International Documentary Association’s annual awards given out to docu films that get theatrical or television play. Not surprisingly, Fox Searchlight’s extremely popular film fest audience winner YoungAHeart took the award for Ida /Alan Ett Music Documentary Award, while to David Novack’s docu on the nauseating affects of the coal industry (I reviewed this early in the year) claimed the Ida/Pare Lorentz Award. The remaining three categories for Best Feature, Best Short and Audience award will be given out on the 5th of December. This year’s main feature category will see Kassim the Dream, Man on Wire Stranded: I’ve Come From a Plane that Crashed in the Mountains, Young@Heart

"A Walk to Beautiful" ran away with the prize in the feature category at the 2007 International Documentary Association Distinguished Documentary Achievement Awards gala benefit Friday at the DGA Theatre.
The ceremony included many powerful messages, including one from a Hurricane Katrina survivor. And despite a back injury that prevented him from attending in person, Michael Moore delivered an enthusiastically received IDA Career Achievement Award acceptance message calling for efforts to have documentaries embraced by exhibitors.
"Walk" topped a field of nominees that included "Crazy Love", "Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience," "Sicko", and "Taxi to the Dark Side".
The film, from director-producer Mary Olive Smith and executive producer Steve Engel, focuses on five courageous women in Ethiopia who have suffered from devastating childbirth injuries and have been shunned by their family and villages. The film follows the trials they endure and their attempts to rebuild their lives.
"A Son's Sacrifice", from director Yoni Brook, producer Musa Sheed and executive producer Marco Williams, won the short documentary category. The film follows the journey of a young American Muslim who confronts his roots.
The inaugural Alan Ett Music Documentary Award for exemplary creative use of music was presented to "We Aare Together (Thina Simunye)," from director-producer Paul Taylor and producer Teddy Leifer.
