Exclusive: Channel 4 has delivered the verdict on which of its biggest 2023 entertainment launches have landed a second season.
Tempting Fortune, the Paddy McGuinness-hosted adventure reality series, has been given the greenlight for a supersized second season, although U.S. co-pro partner Roku is no longer involved. Danny Dyer-hosted Scared of the Dark, in which celebrities are locked in a pitch-black space for a week, will no longer be seeing the light of day and has been axed.
The move ends a several-months-long period of speculation over which major 2023 launches would be given the nod for Season 2 during which Channel 4 also culled Studio Lambert’s Traitors-esque Rise and Fall and its version of U.S. History channel hit Alone, the latter revealed by Deadline last week.

Steve Collins and Chris Eubank recall their 1995 super-middleweight world title clash, and its odd details, with intelligence and honesty
Here is a boxing documentary that is a cut above the usual back-slapping nostalgia – largely down to the canny, vivid presences of its two central figures, Steve Collins and Chris Eubank. Collins, of course, was the Irish fighter who psyched out a hitherto-dominant Eubank in their super-middleweight world title fight in 1995 to pull off a major shock – though possibly less of a shock than it might have been made out, as Collins was already a world title holder at middleweight.
Both Collins and Eubank come across well: intelligent, honest and able to comment with the benefit of perspective on what they brought to the encounter. Eubank, particularly, has retained his dignity in defeat – even if the archive shots of him preparing for the ring walk astride an idling motorbike as Tina Turner...

Big Brother housemates will have to abide by the same social media blackout as Love Island contestants while those working on the show will be regularly reminded of Banijay’s Bullying and Harassment, Grievance and Whistleblowing Policies, as ITV shares its duty of care protocols for the reboot. Kicking off Sunday, Big Brother returns to British TV screens after five years off air and ITV and Banijay label Initial have been stringent in their approach to duty of care, given that conflict shows such as the Jeremy Kyle Show have been axed while Big Brother has been off air. In ITV’s Malpractice, (the title is a bit of a giveaway), a dedicated but stressed-out emergency doctor, Lucy Edwards (Niamh Algar), finds herself accused of negligence following the death of a young drug overdose victim, Edith Owusu. Edith’s treatment is temporarily sidelined when a blood-spattered kid and an armed man bust into A&e, and Lucy has to make split-second decisions about priorities. There’s not enough beds, and, as the duty nurse asks her, who’s she going to give the space to – the child bleeding to death, or the “junkie”, now stabilised? In this fast-cut busy opening sequence, Lucy delegates the routine task of looking after the overdosed girl to a fairly incompetent but devious junior (Priyanka Patel as Dr Ramya Morgan). We see that it is she, not Lucy, who gets mixed up about Edith’s dosages, with lethal results; but Dr Morgan is a more...

In Plato’s allegory of the cave, a group of people find themselves bound to the walls of a subterranean hangout. Ahead of them they see flickering shadows, caused by the distant fires of the sunlit world, but all else, for them, is darkness. Are these shadows reality, or just a pale facsimile? That was the question of two millennia ago: now it’s Channel 4’s turn to use darkness as an allegory for reality (or reality TV), with Scared in the Dark, a new five-part celebrity reality show told, not by Plato, but by Danny Dyer.
Scared of the Dark follows a group of eight celebrities – boxers Chris Eubank and Nicola Adams, singer Max George, Love Islander Chloe Burrows, ubiquitous TV person Scarlett Moffatt, actor Donna Preston, stand-up Chris McCausland and, well, Gazza – as they spend a week or so in the pitch black. “Located deep within a 146,000 sq ft hangar,...

Former England footballer Paul “Gazza” Gascoigne has become the first ever winner of experimental Channel 4 reality show Scared of the Dark.
Gascoigne came out on top over seven other celebrities, after spending 180 hours in complete darkness – living, eating, sleeping and completing challenges.
The series, billed as a “world first”, came to a close on Thursday (20 April) with the winner announced by host Danny Dyer.
Following his win, Gascoigne said he had been “nervous” to take part but said the experience had made him “a better person”.
“People always question my mental strength but my success on this series proves that I am strong,” he said.
“I was nervous going in there but having gotten this far on the series made me the happiest man around.
“I’m so happy. It’s unbelievable. I’ve got my smile back. I’m a better person.”

Channel 4 has received nearly 1,300 Ofcom complaints over its controversial show Naked Education.
Presented by Anna Richardson and created by the team behind Naked Attraction, the educational show about body positivity aired on Channel 4 earlier this month.
In the first episode, a group of 14 to 16-year-olds were taught about body hair, with the segment concluding with four adults stripping off in front of them to show diversity in other people’s bodies.
The four adults also spoke to the teenagers about their own issues with body image and the topic of pubic hair.
The series was hotly debated on social media and daytime TV, with Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway saying: “There’s something about the physicality of a stranger being naked in front of a teenager which I just feel uncomfortable about, because of all the things that we read about.”

May will be a brutal month for fans of great television. Succession hangs up its necktie on 28 May at the end of its fourth season, bringing an end to the best drama of the last decade or so. The same night, on the same channel (HBO in the US; Sky and Now in the UK), Barry will also finish up its own stellar four-season run. Bill Hader’s showbiz satire/crime drama fusion has never quite hit the zeitgeist like its HBO compatriot, but those who did tune in have been transfixed by its inventive, blackly comic sensibility and first-rate performances. Season four, thankfully, sees it go out on a high.

The BBC has reportedly issued letters gauging interest for voluntary redundancy to its top presenting stars, sending shockwaves through the corporation.
The move is thought to be part of a cost-saving mission by the corporation, which includes reducing spending in its news division.
On Saturday night (15 April), the Mail reported that the BBC’s interim managing editor of news and current affairs, Philippa Busby, has written to all its senior TV and radio presenters asking them to consider voluntary redundancy.
The publication reported that Huw Edwards, Clive Myrie and Sophie Raworth were among those to receive letters. The Independent has contacted their representatives for comment.
On Twitter, Edwards said the move was a “standard invitation to consider applying for voluntary redundancy” and “nothing more”.
Alongside a picture of him and his mother drinking champagne, he wrote: “Reality check. A standard Hr exercise by @BBCNews (one of many over the years) is just that.

The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin has hinted that the hit HBO series won’t end at season two.
During a panel about the apocalyptic drama on Sunday (16 April) at Nab in Las Vegas, Mazin said there’s “quite a bit of story to tell”.
“Our plan is to do it not just for one more season,” he said of the show starring Pedro Pascal. “We should be around for a while.”
The update comes after Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie, gave her thoughts on when season two is likely to arrive.
Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show last month, Ramsey said, “It will be a while. I think we’ll probably shoot at the end of this year, beginning of next.”
“So it’ll probably be the end of 2024, early 2025.”

Louis Theroux wasn’t always this cuddly. Time was that public figures would agree to be followed around by his camera crew and come out of it looking like a bit of a tit. Think of his early-Noughties When Louis Met..., full of compellingly eccentric encounters with Ann Widdecombe, Neil and Christine Hamilton and Chris Eubank. But cultural mores have changed: we don’t like being mean, and Theroux is now a meme. And if his money don’t jiggle jiggle, neither does the opener to his new BBC Two series Louis Theroux Interviews..., which is a surprisingly flat and unengaging portrait of Stormzy, one of the UK’s most celebrated performers. Let’s hope later episodes, with the likes of Dame Judi Dench and Rita Ora, have more to offer.
“I’ve wanted to meet you for so long!” says Stormzy – real name Michael Omari – when Theroux turns up backstage at his tour.

Although I am fortunate enough to have hundreds of childhood memories that I think of with incredible fondness, some have certainly stayed with me more than others. When it came to television in the early 1990’s, access to Sky was very limited and no one had hard drive based Freeview boxes for catch up TV – we had to use video cassette tapes or simply watch live TV.
In my house, this simply meant that I was able to stay up for certain programs as long as I remained quiet and calm whilst making occasional (but not too frequent) observations about the subject matter at hand. Among the programs I was allowed to stay up for were Chris Eubank boxing matches, Fred Dibnah’s chimney demolition program and, when possible, the feature length adaptations of Bernard Cornwell’s Sharpe (starring Sean Bean) on ITV. For those who don’t know it,...

'Colin Firth vs Scum'. In an alternate reality, we'd like to think this movie was given that iconic title. Especially as its most joyous scene involves the former Mr Darcy tackling a pub full of rampaging thugs armed with just an umbrella – and without even one of his immaculately groomed hairs coming out of place or a single expletive emitting from lips that wouldn't scowl if you offered them a blank cheque. The Firth doesn't do disheveled or uncivilised, for as we learn from his character - 'manners maketh man'.
We also discover that the creative forces behind Kick-Ass maketh another belter that puts a dynamic twist on a well-worn genre. Boasting immense performances from Firth as an aristocratic agent and...

Have you already been on Dancing On Ice? Is Splash! not returning your calls? If that's the case, worry not, welcome to The Jump. Channel 4's latest abysmal attempt to fill a Big Brother-shaped hole in their schedules.
While Emma Willis was fronting one of the best-ever series of Celebrity Big Brother over on Channel 5, poor old Davina McCall was freezing her bits off in the Austrian mountains. Celebrities on The Jump, you are live on Channel 4, please do not swear of break your f**king leg.
10 years ago, Channel 4 had an underrated and weirdly enjoyable reality show called The Games. Watching D-listers and members of So Solid Crew tackling weightlifting and the hurdles was weirdly hypnotic and fun. Don't laugh. It was.
The Jump should have at the very least been knockaround, trashy fun in a similar vein. Sinitta preparing to hurl herself down in a bobsleigh.

Former boxing champion Chris Eubank has reportedly begged Simon Cowell for a judging role on this year’s X Factor series.
The 43 year old lisping star is said to be desperate to stand in for Dannii Minogue while she is on maternity leave and insisted that he would be a tough and straight talking judge.
He told the Daily Star: “I think I am the best person for the job.
“I was mates with Louis and Simon in the 90s so who else can you imagine doing it other than me?”
The newspaper reports that Michael Buble, Shirley Bassey, Pink and Mel B are currently being considered for the panel and Ronan Keating revealed that he was offered a spot.
He admitted: “Yes. I was offered that. But I can’t do it.”
Most likely because he’ll be busy judging on the Australian version of the show.

Former boxer Chris Eubank is spending £30,000 on dentistry to cure his lisp, it has been reported. According to The Daily Telegraph, the Celebrity Big Brother contestant has visited a clinic in Ireland to undergo surgery on his front teeth, which he hopes will alter his speech. Dentist Barry Buckley is reportedly aiming to reduce the gap in Eubank's front teeth and will have others lengthened. "Chris is having the full cosmetic makeover," said Buckley.
