The last voiceover Anthony Bourdain did for “Parts Unknown” was a fitting one.
As a packed, emotional house discovered at the Tribeca screening of the show’s upcoming Kenya episode — the twelfth and final season premiere featuring “United Shades of America” host W. Kamau Bell — Bourdain wanted to emphasize a point that has sometimes gotten lost in his work. “I do my best,” he said of his exploratory travel around the world. “I look, I listen. But in the end, I know it’s my story. Not Kamau’s, not Kenya’s. Those stories have yet to be heard.”
The coda, which airs after the credits on the episode, is one that not even his producers quite understood when Bourdain wrote it. “We didn’t have any idea what the f— he was talking about,” said director Morgan Fallon, with a small laugh. But after Bourdain died, they revisited the...

The September 22 world premiere of “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” at this year’s Tribeca TV fest wasn’t a memorial. While the series won the Emmy for Outstanding Informational Series or Special just a few weeks ago, it did so under the burden of Bourdain’s recent suicide. However, the Season 12 opener, “Kenya,” was a joyful episode that focused on Bourdain and “United Shades of America” host W. Kamau Bell.
In the episode, the pair explored the country’s capital of Nairobi as well as the savannah and more rural communities, with memorable sequences in which Bell’s dining options included cow’s blood beverage and a goat’s eyeball.
At the Q&A following the premiere, director Morgan Fallon told Bell that his rookie status was an advantage: “What’s nice from, a scumbag producer point of view, is that we knew that you were going to eat anything...

Forget This is Us. The emotional roller-coaster of the TV season may have been tonight’s world premiere of the Season 12 premiere of Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown at the Tribeca TV Festival.
The crowd at Spring Studios laughed, cried, oohed and ahhed as the episode set in Kenya unfolded. CNN has announced five episodes and two specials will comprise the farewell season, which kicks off Sunday night.
As Bourdain shared the screen with fellow CNN host and comedian W. Kamau Bell, the dialogue and voiceover tapped the depths of Nairobi and the surrounding savanna. Each finely honed line brought a familiar thrill, a ruminative resonance, but also a stab of recognition. In June, Bourdain committed suicide at age 61 during production in France.
After the screening, a reflective and candid conversation with five of his collaborators, moderated by CNN anchor John Berman, explored his work and legacy. While there were...

In the 11 seasons of CNN’s “Parts Unknown,” the late Anthony Bourdain taught us more about humanity than about food. The series captured six Emmy nominations this year, including four in below-the-line categories.
The show’s “Lagos” episode — which snagged noms in cinematography, picture e diting and sound mixing — details slices of the Nigerian megacity, which Bourdain describes as “the most dynamic, unrestrained and energetic expression of free-market capitalism and do-it-yourself entrepreneurship on the planet.”
Production prepped for three months, then spent several days scouting before recording more than 50 hours of footage, visiting affluent Victoria Island, where nightclubs cater to the elite; the floating shantytown of Makoko; and Computer Village, an electronics market where people repair goods as customers watch. Morgan Fallon, one of the three nominated DPs alongside Jerry Risius and Tarik Hameedi, cites the 1982 film “Fela Kuti: Music Is the Weapon” as a visual reference. “I fell in...

After premiering current Emmy nominees “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “The Sinner” in 2017, this year’s Tribeca TV Festival is looking to make an impact at the end of summer 2018. Featured in its second edition are new season premieres of Showtime’s “Ray Donovan,” the CBS drama “Madam Secretary,” Crackle’s “StartUp,” HBO’s “Tracey Ullman’s Show” — including a conversation between the star and Meryl Streep — as well as the 20th season of “Law & Order: Svu.”
Despite the excitement surrounding those series, one premiere is likely to stand out from the rest: The festival will host the world premiere of CNN’s “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” featuring Bourdain and W. Kamau Bell in Kenya. The first episode of Season 12 is a special presentation: an extended cut of the final episode finished with Anthony Bourdain’s full involvement and the last to feature his narration. An episode of Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown set in Lagos, Nigeria, was the first in the CNN travel and food series to combine digital photography with 16mm film — a choice that proved organic to the story, says director of photography Morgan Fallon, who also directed the episode and earned a second Emmy nomination this year as a producer on the series.
The multiformat look was carefully planned with the series' popular globetrotting host. "It was the high point of my career to be able to travel the world with him," says Fallon of the late Bourdain, who died ...

Robin Thede’s New Gig
In July, Bet canceled late-night comedy series “The Rundown With Robin Thede.” On Saturday, Thede was all ours.
To open, Thede asked all in attendance to stand with hands over hearts, then cued the theme song to “The Americans,” our new national anthem. Politics aside, it was the FX thriller’s night. Later in the monologue, Thede cracked jokes about the Trumps, “Handmaid’s Tale,” “The Crown,” Rachel Dolezal,...

Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown director/producer Morgan Fallon accepted his TCA Award for Best News and Information program.
“I spent nine years traveling with Tony, directing, shooting and producing Parts Unknown. It was the greatest gift of my career,” he began.
He thanked the critics for honoring Bourdain and the popular CNN series, assuring them “It means a lot to us, especially right now.” Bourdain died of suicide in June, while working on an episode of the CNN series.
“At the core of what I think he did, and what I hoped we helped him do, was walk through any door, sit at any table with the same humility and respect, no matter who he was sitting across from,” Fallon said.
“We need that more now than ever before. It’s a tremendous loss. He taught us to be curious, open an empathetic. And we will all miss him greatly.
