Zany caper follows Jo Hartley as a big-veg enthusiast defending her patch from elaborate ill-doings
Chaos reigns in this strange, funny and amiably anarchic mockumentary about dirty tricks in the cutthroat world of competitive marrow-growing, written and co-directed by film-maker Brook Driver. Maybe the script could have gone through another couple of drafts, but that might have removed some of the flavour. As it is, it feels like Thomas Pynchon had emailed Ricky Gervais an idea he’d had for a British comedy, and the result certainly has some laughs.
Jo Hartley (a stalwart of Shane Meadows’s movies Dead Man’s Shoes and This Is England) is Caroline, a marrow-grower and a divorcee who pretends her ex-husband is dead and is now in a kind of Nsa relationship with her needy neighbour Willy (Celyn Jones); they are both mates with conspiracy theorist and fanatically competitive prize-veg enthusiast Paul (Richard Lumsden...

“What if I don’t like the guy I am now, bro” says Bosco (Malcolm Kamulete). “You have to learn to like him ‘cause you’re stuck with him” says Rusty (Keiren Hamilton-Amos). Watching family dynamics play out on screen never goes out of fashion and BBC’s latest drama Champion is proof of that.
A love letter to South London, Champion is the first TV project written by Candice Carty-Williams, author of the 2019 novel Queenie, which will also be released as a TV drama on Channel 4 later this year. Champion tells the story of the titular family, focusing mostly on the Champion siblings, rapper Bosco and his sister Vita (Déja J Bowens) as they battle with their sense of duty to their family and their own musical success.

"What if we just start fresh here. This place is special." Lionsgate has revealed a trailer for a cheesy comedy called One Year Off, landing in February early next year on VOD. This film seems to be skipping theaters because eeesh it does not look good. Heartbroken Claire's wine-fueled post-breakup pity-party in London is crashed by her old friend Ben calling from New York City. He has inherited his unknown father's gorgeous beachfront house and club in the Caribbean island of Nevis, West Indies, and he wants her and the old crew to join him for a week while he absorbs this news. In love with the island, and thrilled to be back together again like the good old days, they unanimously decide to stay for year-one year off to reset their lives. This was filmed as a pandemic project on the island of Nevis (see Google Maps) as a...

Liam Neeson plays a rogue hitman with Alzheimer’s in this remake of the 2003 Belgian action thriller Memory of a Killer. Directed by Martin Campbell, it’s a cut above the usual standard of Taken knock-offs.
Liam Neeson has built himself an entire sub-genre of thrillers since the success of Taken in 2010. Often referred to, somewhat cheekily, as the “geri-action” genre, the films all have the same thing in common – grizzled, 60-something Liam Neeson taking out lots of bad guys in as violent a manner as possible.
When Memory begins, it’s very much business as usual for this sort of film. Neeson plays no-nonsense hitman Alex Lewis, who we first meet taking out a shady-looking character in a hospital with ruthless efficiency and a hint of cruelty,...

Another day, another new Netflix Christmas movie. Father Christmas is Back took my interest because of its cast. I can’t say I’m a huge fan of any of the actors (although I’ve seen most of them put in good performances) but it’s just such a random mix of people that thought I’d check out this festive movie.
So lets start with that cast. The biggest star and playing ‘Father’ Christmas (that’s the surname of the family) is Kelsey Grammer and he’s alongside this odd group of actors who I didn’t expect to see in a Netflix movie together – Elizabeth Hurley, Kris Marshall, John Cleese, Caroline Quentin, Katy Brand, Ray Fearon and Talulah Riley.

Chicago – I’ve always felt that the line between being a spy or an assassin has always been blade-thin. Both kill people based on the orders of someone else.
They are always highly trained in fighting and gun-fu. There is a great chance that they will be absolutely charming and unusually attractive because the job demands it.

Hell, they might even be prone to age-inappropriate relationships that stem from mommy or daddy issues. The true deciding factor on your future path will depend on who picks you to be your mentor, and here is where we find the origin of The Protégé.

Martin Campbell’s action thriller ‘Memory’ has rounded out its ensemble cast, adding Emmy winner Guy Pearce, Monica Bellucci, Harold Torres, Taj Atwal and Ray Fearon.
The actors will star alongside Liam Neeson, who plays Alex Lewis, an expert assassin “with a reputation for discreet precision.”
According to the logline, when Alex refuses to complete a job for a dangerous criminal organization, he becomes a target and must go on the hunt for those who want him dead. Veteran FBI agents Vincent Serra (Pearce), Linda Amistead (Atwal) and Mexican intelligence liaison Hugo Marquez (Torres) are brought in to investigate the trail of bodies, leading them closer to Alex, but also drawing the ire of local tech mogul Davana Sealman (Bellucci). With the crime syndicate and FBI in hot pursuit, Alex has the skills to stay ahead, except for one thing — he is struggling with severe memory loss, affecting his every move.

Legend is a much abused word in the movie business – but Jackie Chan really is a legend. The undisputed king of martial-arts movies kicked up a notch with slapstick and jaw-dropping stunts, the star is acrobatic poetry in motion. American audiences know him best from his three Rush Hour action comedies with Chris Tucker (No. 4 is on the drawing board), but true aficionados rightly point to Chan's death-defying Hong Kong cinema epics – see Drunken Master, Police Story and Armor of God – as pinnacles of the form. The lifetime achievement Oscar...

Da Vinci’s Demons, Season 2: Episode 7 – “The Vault of Heaven”
Written by Brian Nelson & Marco Ramirez
Directed by Peter Hoar
Airs Saturday nights at 9 on Starz
One of the more surprising improvements Da Vinci’s Demons has made in its second season is how the diverging storylines in any given episode manage to work well in tandem. Even if some of them are unrelated, there is enough going on that is, at the very least, entertaining to give purpose to following certain characters. “The Vault of Heaven” doesn’t deviate from that formula. And, really, none of the supporting storylines that serve the main one from which the episode gets its title fall completely flat. They each work in their own ways. The problem in this case is that this is an episode of DVD that needed to be completely focused on Leonardo’s trip into the Vault of Heaven.
