- As well as one of British television's most successful directors and producers, he was also the first ever Dalek. As the assistant floor manager on the first Dalek serial, he held the plunger that approaches Jacqueline Hill for the first cliffhanger.
- He directed serials starring the first three actors to play the Doctor in Doctor Who (1963), William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee.
- Much of his early work as a director in television has been wiped, including all four of his episodes of the science fiction series Out of the Unknown (1965). Surprisingly, though, all four of his Doctor Who (1963) serials (broadcast between 1966 and 1971) have survived either on 16mm black-and-white film or 525-line NTSC colour tapes recovered from Canada.
