"I want you to know the only reason I'm consenting to this is because I wish to clear my name." With those words, a twentysomething Brooklyn artist named Nola Darling introduced herself to the world – and, in the process, so did Spike Lee, a prodigiously talented twentysomething writer-director who invented the character for She's Gotta Have It, which hit theaters in the summer of 1986. Speaking directly to the camera, Nola (played by Tracy Camilla Johns) laid out her life's fundamental dilemma: how to be a free-thinking, independent woman who refused...

Kenneth Branagh is a theater man at heart. So his spanking new version of the 1934 Dame Agatha Christie chestnut Murder on the Orient Express – Branagh directs and stars as world-famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot – feels more like an all-star, theatrically confined stage piece than something freshly reimagined for the screen. Its delights, including dazzling production design and period costumers, are decidedly retro, as is the plot: A man is murdered on the Orient Express. Poirot must interrogates a dozen strangers on the train, each a suspect in the bloody homicide.

Supergirl had an interesting second season. Not only did the series move to The CW after spending its first season on parent network CBS, but it also delved a lot more into Kara’s life as a person outside of her powers. She fell in love, she got a job as a reporter, and she attempted to get by without the wise words of Cat Grant to guide her.

Just like her hit TV shows, the news that executive producer Shonda Rhimes will depart ABC for Netflix has shaken Twitter.
“Can’t wait to see what shonda rhimes does with the creative freedom and latitude at netflix — but, uh, does this mean grey’s is ending?” one fan wrote Monday.
While Grey’s Anatomy — along with other Rhimes-produced series Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder and midseason debut For the People — will continue to air on ABC as planned, others still feared for the consequences the move to a limitless streaming platform will have on their free time.

After you’ve done the impossible, what’s next?
The question functions as a central thesis for “Transparent” Season 3, as Maura Pfefferman — who came out to her family in Season 1 and fell in love during Season 2 — wonders why she’s still unhappy despite having “everything.” This kind of morose existentialism has been a marker of outstanding television of late (“The Leftovers,” “BoJack Horseman” and Jay Duplass’ “Togetherness,” to name a few), but perhaps the more interesting aspect of the question itself derives from why Jill Soloway is asking it here and now.
“Transparent” Season 2 was a creative barnburner — alive with intensity from scene to scene as Soloway not only made crucial adjustments to the character dynamics established in Season 1, but introduced a time-jumping theme that built to a sensational crescendo of emotions. It was, in reductive terms, the best it could possible be.

How would you program this year's newest, most interesting films into double features with movies of the past you saw in 2015?Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2015—in theatres or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2015 to create a unique double feature. All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2015 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch...

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. The endearing "Carol" also received noms for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and Saoirse Ronan's performance in the beautiful "Brooklyn" also received a nomination.
The big winner of the SAG noms is Bleecker Street's "Trumbo." Missing from earlier critics awards (see here...

Following up Room, it looks like director Lenny Abrahamson will be reteaming with his Frank star Domhnall Gleeson for his next project. The Daily Mail reports they are readying an adaptation of Sarah Waters’ ghost story The Little Stranger to shoot next summer. Set in the 1940’s, it’s said to follow a small-town doctor who treats a family in an 18th century estate. Scripted by Lucinda Coxon (The Danish Girl), we’re certainly looking forward to the project.

For Parks and Recreation showrunner Mike Schur, Thursday’s Emmy nominations were as relaxed as a day at the spa.
After all, he’s been through more nerve-wracking situations — crafting the series finale for his beloved NBC comedy, for example.
“People in America have a real thing about finales,” Schur tells TVLine. “Everyone’s like, ‘What’s going to happen in the finale? Is the finale going to be good or bad?’ And there’s this feeling that if the finale’s bad, then the entire amount of time that you devoted to watching a show over seven years is totally ruined.

I am the happiest TV fan in the world. Over the next year or so, we'll be getting a new season of "Twin Peaks," with David Lynch allegedly directing every single episode. And we'll be getting an "X-Files" sequel miniseries, which may well feature both an episode written by the reclusive-but-brilliant Darin Morgan, and a rumored sequel to one of the sickest hours of network television ever, "Home." I am the most annoyed TV fan in the world. Over the next year or so, we'll be getting a "Heroes" sequel series run by the same guy who very quickly ran out of ideas on the original. We'll be getting a "Coach" sequel series that will give Craig T. Nelson the sitcom comeback he didn't get when he passed on the role of Jay on "Modern Family." We'll be getting DJ Tanner and Kimmy Gibbler living together in a "Fuller House,...

Finally bringing the convoluted and muddled story of The Evil Within to a close with yet another bang, The Consequence finds Juli Kidman squaring off with her bosses at Mobius while escaping the twisted Stem landscape for good. While it’s not quite the pleasant surprise that last month’s The Assignment was, this finale is still more than satisfying, adding much more detail to the game’s mythology and featuring more than a few hair-raising scenes.
Picking up immediately where The Assignment left off, Kidman continues to wander throughout Ruvik’s dreamscape in search of Leslie. While many of the revelations thrown at players this time around are retreads of plot points already hit on in The Evil Within, the ending still packs a punch as well as a genuinely surprising and decently believable twist that hints at a spectacular sequel if it’s handled correctly.

As much as I loved Shinji Mikami’s last entry in his venerable series of horror games, The Evil Within left me wanting more closure from its convoluted and gap-filled story. Any plot details that were given weren’t terribly straightforward, the ending was left way too open and just about nothing was explained in regards to how Juli Kidman, Sebastian’s partner, knew as much as she did about what was going on. Thankfully, the first episode of Dlc, The Assignment, remedies this by offering a story-driven look into Kidman’s role in the proceedings.
Stepping into Kidman’s shoes this time around, The Assignment follows the shady double agent as she tries to track down Leslie, the psycho-savant who could get her out of the Stem’s nightmare world. Working for Mobius, she is told that she will be given a way into the system that will make...

This week on Fox’s Gotham, demoted Jim Gordon found himself investigating a murder within the dreary Arkham Asylum, Penguin’s hubris landed him behind bars and Barbara got dealt a “toxic” blow.
