The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, a whopping 61 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12. Last year, there were only 48 options, compared to 41 in 2021 and 28 in 2020.
All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. A new rule change will require each voter to make no more than five selections in this category, whereas there was previously no limit. As opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

Midway through Dare Me, a new USA drama set in the world of high school cheerleading, we see local cheer coach Colette French (Willa Fitzgerald) watching the classic Forties film noir Double Indemnity, based on the novel by James M. Cain. The scene is less interested in revealing something about the enigmatic Colette than it is in winking at the influences of Megan Abbott, who adapted her own novel for television. Abbott’s specialty has long been recreating the grimy, hopeless, and traditionally male experience of noir in unapologetically female contexts.

Throughout 20th-century Ireland, unwed women who fell pregnant were pilloried and sent to Catholic care homes at which their children were born, raised, and buried. At the Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home in Tuam, which operated between 1925 and 1961, 800 children are alleged to have died, their bodies later found entombed in the site’s septic tank.
Written and directed by Paddy Murphy, The Perished is bookended by heartbreaking titles that relate the real-world horrors surrounding this small Irish town, and a tender list of dedications to women around the world who have suffered as a result of their choice to have an abortion. Well-meaning though these messages may be, they could be better served by the feature that unfolds between them.

Paddy Murphy (The Three Don’ts) writes and directs The Perished, an Irish supernatural horror flick with a dark and shiver-inducing synopsis which see’s a young woman named Sarah, struggling with the trauma of having an abortion and being broken up with by her boyfriend and shunned by her religious family, who moves into an old house in the country to try to recover. Little does she know that the house is in fact the site of a mass baby grave. The haunting begins as the spirits of the very young unwanted dead seek a mother. Just reading what this film was about before pressing play made me curious, a little worried and slightly uneasy. I mean… this is horror, so that can’t be a bad feeling to have.

USA Network has picked up to series its drama pilot Dare Me, from Universal Cable Prods. in association with Petter Berg and Michael Lombardo’s Film 44. Key to the project securing a series order by USA was Netflix coming on board for a co-licensing deal — called “co-producing” by USA — with the Internet network taking first-run rights to the series outside of the U.S.
Dare Me, starring Willa Fitzgerald, Herizen Guardiola and Marlo Kelly, was one of four pilots ordered by USA in April. Of the other three, Bourne offshoot Treadstone saw its order upped to straight-to-series last summer when another streamer, Amazon, signed on as international distributor, and Briarpatch was picked up to series last week. The fourth, Erase, starring Denis Leary, is not going forward.

Ian Fleming’s James Bond is one of the most recognizable and successful characters in modern popular culture. The novels have sold over 100 million copies, and the film franchise is the second most successful in history, having been recently displaced by the Harry Potter series. For most readers and viewers, 007 is merely a Western pop icon. However, there is much more at work in the novels and films than appears on the surface. In fact, there are deeper undercurrents, themes, symbols, and messages that operate as psychological warfare propaganda and an in-depth semiotic analysis of the novels and films yields an interpretation that confirms this thesis. Much has been written on the subject of Ian Fleming’s James Bond. Los Angeles — Shane Salerno's phone never stops ringing.
Known until now as a screenwriter for "Armageddon" and "Savages," working by day on a sequel to "Avatar," he has taken on a surprising and news-making identity: the latest, and, apparently, greatest seeker of clues about J.D. Salinger.
Salerno is finally opening up about a private quest he worked on for a decade, spending $2 million of his own money. Stating that he has found more than even he had imagined, including what the author might have written over the last half century of his life, Salerno is presenting his case in "Salinger," a unique, 3-way project: A 700-page book, co-authored with David Shields; a theatrical release distributed by the Weinstein Company; and a TV documentary that will air on PBS in January as the 200th installment of "American Masters."

The film, Helena From The Wedding, is writer/director Joseph Infantolino’s feature film debut. It stars Lee Tergensen, Paul Fitzgerald, Gillian Jacobs (from NBC’s Community) and the always incredible Melanie Lynskey.
I got a chance to talk to Joseph and stars Lee and Paul at this years SXSW.
Both Lee and Paul have resumes a mile long. You’ve seen Lee in everything from Point Break, Waynes World to HBO’s Oz and Generation Kill. Paul has been a guest star on shows like The Mentalist, Fringe and Medium.
The film is about newlyweds (Lee and Melanie Lynskey) as they begin to question their relationship at the same time they host their friends in a remote cabin over New Year’s weekend.

I’m going to try to say this without coming off completely hokey, but I’d like to consider myself a sensitive soul. I study English Literature, read Shakespeare, have a cat, and can be seen crying at commercials. Despite this wonderful feature of my personality (I promise I’m cool), I always like to maintain a critical distance while watching films I’m reviewing so I can fully appreciate what’s on the screen, and analyze everything it’s trying to say. But every once in a while, there comes a film that completely sweeps me off my feet and makes me dive head first into its plot and characters. Helena From The Wedding is one of those films.

Director: Joseph Infantolino Writer: Joseph Infantolino Starring: Lee Tergesen, Melanie Lynskey, Gillian Jacobs, Dagmara Dominczyk, Paul Fitzgerald, Dominic Fumusa, Jessica Hecht, Corey Stoll Alice (Melanie Lynskey) and Alex (Lee Turgesen) have invited a few of their closest friends to a snowy upstate New York cabin to celebrate New Year’s Eve with them. Even before their friends arrive, Alice and Alex seem to be forcing a facade of perfection upon their relationship. When Don (Dominic Fumusa) and his wife Lynn (Jessica Hecht) arrive, we quickly realize that Alice and Alex are not the only couple experiencing some trouble. Actually, Don and Lynn are the most outwardly dysfunctional of the couples. Lynn, an incessant nag, always expecting Don to pick up wine and cigarettes at her beckoning call; and Don just goes along with it all. The other couple – Eve (Dagmara Dominczyk) and Steven (Corey Stoll) – is also on the rocks.

The South by Southwest Film Festival announced its 2010 feature line-up Wednesday night, and I couldn’t be more excited. The nine day event starts March 12, 2010 here in Austin, Texas, and I’ll be covering as much as I can from start to finish. Though, if it’s anything like last year, I’ll be asleep on my feet by the end of it.
The 2010 list includes 119 films (55 world premieres), but here are a few notables: The previously announced Kick-Ass will start the festivities. Elektra Luxx, the sequel to the underseen comedy Women in Trouble, starring Carla Gugino, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and too many more to name. Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass in which Edward Norton plays identical twins. A documentary titled People vs. George Lucas that I will be seeing. Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs. Plus the “SNL” spin-off movie MacGruber in its world premiere, possibly before the MacGyver creator shuts it down.

Less than a week worth of recovering from the Sundance Film Festival, and we are already looking forward to our next, big film fest coverage. That would be the South by Southwest Film Festival held annually in Austin, Texas. Last year, Scott and I brought you all kinds of coverage from the Lone Star State, and this year doesn’t look to be much different.
With that, the announcement came last night of the feature films that will be playing at the SXSW Film Festival. Previous announcement were already made about films like Cold Weather, Electra Luxx, Hubble 3D, Lemmy, Saturday Night, and The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights making their debut. Kick-ass was recently announced as the opening night film, as well.
Among the other films being presented this year are some Sundance darlings, a few, highly anticipated premieres, and MacGruber.

I was so excited at seeing the SXSW line up last night that I completely forgot to post it and started searching the interwebs for cool content to go with it. Oops. Yes, I wish I was there but alas, it wasn’t mean to be (though don’t despair. We’ll be bringing you wicked awesome coverage).
But enough rambling, you want to know what’s all playing. Well, for a start there’s the much anticipated McGruber (trailer), the Duplass’ semi-mainstream comedy Cyrus, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs (trailer, review), Daniel Stamm’s horror flick Cotton and that’s on top of the previously announced titles which include Electra Luxx (Carla Gugino as a pregnant porn star? Mixing big name films with intimate indie gems, the sheer number of films and the vast array of talented filmmakers is sure to be a hit with attendees and critics alike.
This lineup includes premieres of studio films such as Universal’s MacGruber, Lionsgate’s teen superhero actioneer Kick-Ass and smaller films like Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs, Michel Gondry’s The Thorn in the Heart and Steven Soderbergh’s And Everything Is Going Fine. With so many films to watch, it will be very difficult to find time to seem them all during the events nine days. But hell, we’re going to try.
