After leaving the Dceu behind, Zack Snyder has been quite busy with his Rebel Moon franchise which already has two films to its name. The films revolve around a fictional galaxy ruled by something called the Motherworld. Rebel Moon sees Sofia Boutella in the lead role as she does a splendid job of bringing Korra to life. From the cast to the crew, Zack Snyder worked with brilliant people who were on the top of their game.
Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon: Part 2 – The Scargiver
However, it seems like the filmmaker felt that there was still a piece missing from the puzzle. As it turns out, the missing jigsaw piece needed to complete the picture is none other than Patrick Tatopoulos, the Production Designer for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Now, Zack Snyder is hoping his old friend would help him out on the third Rebel Moon film.

I’ve said this many times, but I state it again: I’m a super fan of the fantasy genre. Whether it’s because The Lord of the Rings saga remains my favorite after all these years or because it’s a genre that allows exploring the true immersive, escapist potential of cinema, I’ve always felt a special connection with this type of storytelling set in a completely imaginary world, full of mythical beings, breathtaking kingdoms and castles, and uniquely unforgettable creatures. Therefore, the mere fact that Damsel is an original fantasy story automatically set my expectations for this Netflix movie higher than usual.
Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) and written by Dan Mazeau (Fast X), Damsel follows the story of Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown), a young woman from a poor kingdom who sees an opportunity to change her life, as well as that of her people and family,...

When the young women lock eyes, a quiet intimacy blooms. Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown) doesn’t know the unnamed girl meeting her gaze from a balcony some distance away, but she feels connected to her. Their smiles awaken flashes of mutual recognition. They share a milky complexion and gentle regard. But this stranger is more than Elodie’s mirror; she is an eerie omen of the young princess’ fate.
In Damsel, Elodie tries to escape the conventions of her own story. Trapped in a world of manners and expectations, the princess seeks adventure and longs to prove her independence. The conceit is familiar: A handful of recent films (and TV shows) have given audiences royal women eagerly subverting the tropes of medieval romances. Disney’s Brave introduced Merida, a fiery archer who brought a more overt contemporary feminism to the entertainment conglomerate’s brand. The Princess starred Joey King as...

It’s Millie Bobby Brown versus dragon in Netflix’s dark fantasy adventure. Here’s our review of Damsel:
By pure coincidence, Damsel arrives on Netflix almost exactly a century after German director Fritz Lang introduced what was likely cinema’s first dragon in 1924’s Die Nibelungen. Lang and his collaborators brought their fearsome creature to life with a mixture of rubber, mechanical joints and puppetry (plus a bit of cocaine if one account is to be believed), and the result has a physical presence that is still captivating 100 years later.
In Damsel, director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and production designer Patrick Tatopoulos used CGI to create their dragon, but it still has plenty of weight, personality, and most importantly, menace. Unlike the gigantic winged beasts of, say, 1981’s Dragonslayer (which had terrific animation from Phil Tippett) or 2002’s Reign Of Fire, Damsel’s dragon is also relatively compact – it’s...

There are some fascinating names behind A24‘s dark comedy, Death of a Unicorne, beyond stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega. Not only is it produced by Ari Aster, but horror master John Carpenter will compose music for the film.
In Death of a Unicorne, “A father (Rudd) and daughter (Ortega) accidentally hit and kill a unicorn while en route to a weekend retreat, where his billionaire boss (Richard Grant) seeks to exploit the creature’s miraculous curative properties.”
The dark comedy marks writer/director Alex Scharfman’s directorial debut.
Award-winning filmmaker and composer John Carpenter (Halloween), Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies will compose music for the film.
The dark comedy has fantasy elements baked into the plot, but with Aster and Carpenter involved, it feels like a safe bet that Death of a Unicorne might dip further into genre territory than first glance.

Zack Snyder’s Dceu was one of the most polarizing film franchises ever. Some audiences adored
Snyder’s dark and mythological take on these iconic characters, while other audiences found the films
to be much more style than substance. However, no matter which side of the divide you’re on, two
things remain true for many of us:
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is not the best movie in the franchise. The Batman warehouse fight scene is iconic.
While Snyder’s DC movies didn’t work for everyone, it’s obvious that Zack Snyder had a clear vision and
style in mind for his films, and that sometimes yielded stunning splash page shots that look like the
comic panels coming to life. This version of Batman is famously played by Ben Affleck, who faced serious
blowback from the announcement that he’d be taking on the cape and cowl.

Geffen Playhouse hosted a few notable names inside the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater on opening night of Vinny DePonto’s Mindplay. The show, described as “a love letter to the imperfect mind,” is a participatory experience that works when audience members jot down “something that’s recently been weighing on your mind,” like a fear, regret, memory, etc. Guests place the slips of paper in sealed envelopes that are then dropped in a fishbowl.
Throughout the night, DePonto pulls out the envelopes at random, one by one, and invites guests on stage for mind-reading exercises. Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino (Up) got the call and DePonto shocked guests by knowing — without opening the envelope — that Giacchino had zeroed in on a favorite memory of attending Burning Man.

Cinematographer Fabian Wagner was one of the first crew or cast members to publicly speak out against Joss Whedon’s version of “Justice League,” which was theatrically released in 2017. The German Dp lent early credence to the #ReleasetheSnyderCut movement’s fervent belief that they’d been lied to; that the theatrical version was not Warner Bros./DC and Whedon carrying out Zack Snyder’s vision, after the director stepped away following a family tragedy. Wagner was one of the first to clearly and publicly state that Whedon rewrote and reshot most of the movie, throwing out “90 percent” of the original material. (Jean-Philippe Gossart is credited as both the second unit director of photography and additional director of photography on “Justice League.)
“If there is a Snyder cut, I hope it’s better than the one that is out now,” said the cinematographer in the summer of 2019, adding he cried when he saw the theatrical version.

Singer and activist Deon Jones was taking part in a peaceful protest in Los Angeles after the killing of George Floyd when a police officer fired a rubber bullet at his face from close range. Had the projectile hit him an inch lower, it could’ve blinded him — an inch higher, he could have died.
As Jones recovered, his long-time collaborator, the artist Glenn Kaino, enlisted several artists, including jazz pianist/Late Show bandleader Jon Batiste and producer Butch Vig, for a new musical project — a reimagining of U2’s classic 1983 protest song,...

A public petition has launched in an attempt to get the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to present all 24 categories during the live Oscars telecast on Sunday, February 14. The Academy has been the subject of backlash since announcing February 11 the four categories that will be presented during commercial breaks and edited back into the category at a later time in the telecast: Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Hairstyling and Makeup, and Best Live Action Short. The decision has sparked outrage from the industry and the moviegoing public at large.
In an online petition launched on Change.org this week, organizer Michael Jolls writes the decision “has been seen as a slap in the face to filmmakers all across the globe.” Over 13,870 people have signed the petition as of this writing and the signatures show no signs of slowing down. I’ve got a fun little tidbit of information for you regarding an Easter egg that has been pointed out and confirmed for Shane Black’s The Predator.
This Easter egg is a reference to the original Predator test costume that Jean-Claude Van Damme wore when he was training and doing screen tests for the film. It’s pretty crazy to think that at one point Jcvd almost actually played the Predator!
Anyway, the original Predator costume that Jcvd wore was very different than the costume that ended up on the big screen. The screen test costume was pretty silly looking. If you need a refresher, here’s a video for you to watch:
When talking about the costume and what Van Damme thought about it, make-up effects supervisor Steve Johnson said:

Despite the variable quality of movies that it features in, the Predator’s one of the most memorable and striking monster designs in cinema history. From its neon green blood to the plausible feeling bio-mechanical armor to the signature laser sights to that mandibled “ugly motherfucker” of a face – it’s just excellent and a testament to Stan Winston’s skill at creature design.
But it could have been so very different and much much worse if the original design was used, and a reference to this neat bit of sci-fi trivia is contained in Shane Black’s The Predator. Said Easter Egg has just been confirmed by the film’s cinematographer, Larry Fong, who retweeted a shot from the Halloween sequence in the movie.

Part brutal action film, part quirky comedy, regardless of how you divide it, there’s no denying that The Predator is 100 percent a Shane Black film, albeit one of his most uneven directorial efforts in some time. This latest chapter in the Predator universe feels like there are two movies happening simultaneously, often at odds with each other, but as a whole, there are a lot of aspects to The Predator that really won me over as a longtime fan of this series. It may not be nearly as polished at the original Predator, but Black still delivers up an experience that’s far more entertaining than either Alien vs. Predator movie (and I say that as someone who genuinely likes the first one), and manages to find new ways to build on the mythology of the eponymous creatures, without ever feeling like he’s shoe-horning in ideas just to...

Aside from the original, the Predator franchise has never fully found its stride. Different takes on the material have bred mixed results, but never a full on success. Now, that changes with The Predator, which finally figured out what was missing. The secret sauce? Shane Black. Opening this week, Black’s take on the series mixes action, comedy, and horror in equal measure. It’s a gory blast, way more fun than you’d expect, and wittier than it has any right to be. It’s low art and a studio outing, to be sure, but Black’s voice is all over the film, from start to finish. The movie is a hoot. This is how Twentieth Century Fox describes the plot: “From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before,...

Following his departure from the Dceu, when it came to the purging of his now obsolete vision, Zack Snyder was a one-man wrecking crew. It would appear, however, that the man who initially held creative control over arguably the most promising shared cinematic universe at one point is ready for a return to the spotlight.

Okay, that was maybe a little harsh, as Batman V Superman is far from a total trainwreck. Hell, even to this day, Larry Fong is of the believe that the visual team “killed it,” as some of the effects shots included in the final cut are worthy of their own Mondo painting.

Nevertheless, it would appear that now another major player in Snyder’s Dceu, Larry Fong, who served as cinematographer on Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, will be a regular contributor to the superhero group chat going forward.

Having shepherded the Dceu for nearly half a decade, making it the thirteenth highest-grossing film franchise of all-time, it would appear that Zack Snyder, who’s been purging his unfulfilled blueprint online for some time now, seemingly using it as some sort of coping mechanism, will have another major player from his grandiose vision act as a regular contributor to the conversation moving forward.
Larry Fong, who served as cinematographer on Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, confirmed yesterday that “at least part” of the Martha Kent (Diane Lane) abduction sequence was cut from the 2016 blockbuster. According to Fong, the scene in question – which saw Superman (Henry Cavill) – upon learning that Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) has abducted his mother – scour Metropolis in search of his Earth-born mom, was ultimately removed as it was deemed “too dark.”

Typically, it’s been Zack Snyder divulging cut and concealed content from his time as creative director of the Dceu. Last month, the credited helmer of Justice League published on the social media platform, Vero, his most significant revelation yet, pertaining to the Knightmare timeline in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Last week, Snyder confirmed that the NetherRealm Studios video game, Injustice, indeed influenced the Knightmare sequence in his 2016 superhero blockbuster. Yesterday, the American-born filmmaker then took it one step further, disclosing that Barry Allen/Flash (Ezra Miller) managed to travel back in time via the cosmic treadmill. The device in question originates from the comic books and was invented by Barry, which he uses to speed through time. For example, to deliver the ominous warning to Batman (Ben Affleck) in Doj.

By now, most of us DC fanboys have just about gotten over the comic book juggernaut’s latest cinematic debacle, Justice League. Seemingly doomed from the start, what was supposed to be a life preserver for the franchise has ultimately placed the supergroup and its members in even deeper, murkier water. That’s certainly unfortunate, doubly so when you consider the disappointment that was Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.

These days, every big budget comic book movie is met with speculation about the amount of “studio interference” involved in production, but with Justice League, this speculation is augmented by the question of where director Zack Snyder’s work ends, and where the additional material and reshoots of Joss Whedon begins.
This is because Snyder had to depart the project after filming had ended, and Whedon – who had already been working on the script – was drafted in to handle post-production and reshoots. Producer Charles Roven subsequently conceded that the theatrical release consisted of about 15-20% Joss Whedon footage, but we suspect that might be underselling it a bit.
Fans are already petitioning Warner Bros. for a Director’s Cut – that online petition has so far garnered more than 140,000 signatures – while Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa, believes there is enough leftover footage to make a second movie. Perhaps we’ll see Zack Snyder...

Kong is back, transformed into a ‘MonsteVerse’ colossus suitable for combat with Kaiju-sized foes. The key inspiration is video games but the day is saved by capable performers in mostly amusing roles. Even though the show treats its fantasy halfway seriously, it’s still an infantile guns ‘n’ monsters romp, embellished with impressive visual effects.

With Comic-Con just around the corner now, you’d better believe that the hype for Justice League is real.
After all, now that the Dceu has had its first unqualified success with Wonder Woman, hopes are running high that Warner Bros. can repeat the trick with the franchise’s next release. Though there’ve been some big changes behind the scenes recently, what with The Avengers director Joss Whedon taking over from Zack Snyder for the film’s reshoots, fans are crossing their fingers that this will still be the team-up movie that the League deserves.
As mentioned above, Comic-Con kicks off tomorrow and we fully expect WB to drop the next trailer for the blockbuster during their panel this weekend, but until then, we’ve got some words of encouragement for those who may still feel a bit hesitant about Justice League‘s chances of success.

Though it may not feel fully inspired so much as competently pre-visualized, Kong: Skull Island fits snugly into the growing canon of reboots that exist within ever-expanding movie universes. That’s a first sentence to a positive review that perhaps reads a bit more cynically than intended. Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and written by a bunch of dudes (Dan Gilroy and Max Borenstein and Derek Connolly with a story credited to John Gatins), this umpteenth version of the King Kong story pulls from every available pop-culture source in building a fun creature feature. Much of the credit goes to the breathtaking effects and brisk pace, which distract from some lofty line readings and silly plot devices.
In 1973, Bill Randa (John Goodman), with the help of the much-smarter Brooks (Corey Hawkins), rounds up a team of soldiers and specialized civilians to explore a newly discovered island for scientific reasons. Or so he says.

Everything is becoming a cinematic universe. We’ve accepted that by now, I think. It’s just a matter of how it’s all crafted. On Friday, step two in what will be the return of a giant monster universe hits in Kong: Skull Island. Intended to be a prequel to Godzilla, setting up a fight down the line, this film seeks to also be something different from what we normally get from Kong. It’s all about him and his island, as opposed to his interactions with our world. This small change makes for a very different flick. The social ambitions are smaller, but the spectacle at hand can now be even larger. This is a blockbuster through and through folks. The movie is set in the past (it needs to set up movies set in the present, after all), during the Vietnam era, to be precise. When shady company Monarch,...

One of the jobs that the general public doesn’t pay that much attention to — but probably should — is that of the cinematographer. If you think a film looks gorgeous and you’re able to get swept away by what you’re seeing on the screen, that’s all thanks to this man or woman’s work behind the scenes. Turns out, though, you can even see these folks showcase their talent on social media.
Since the role of cinematographer is often referred to as the director of photography — shortened to Dp or Dop — it only makes sense that we hone in Instagram as that’s one popular online platform dedicated specifically to photos. Let’s take a look at 16 of the cinematographers who are utilizing Instagram to showcase more of their work and giving us a glimpse of...

Your opinions about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice are already crystallized by now, so there's no point in rehashing my thoughts on it for the millionth time. We all know where we stand when it comes to this movie. So let's move on to a quick piece of trivia, shall we?
Did you know that director Zack Snyder had a cameo in the film? I didn't until this morning, when I read some tweets from BvS cinematographer Larry Fong, who revealed that Snyder stood in for Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne during one particular shot:

We've already taken a look at some of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's harder to spot cameos, but now another has been revealed courtesy of the movie's cinematographer Larry Fong. It turns out that director Zack Snyder doubled for Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne during the scene where the billionaire reaches for a phone during his investigation into the Man of Steel. So, it was obviously nothing major! Still, this is pretty interesting and just goes to show how much happens in movies like this that we don't know about or think of. After all, it's fair to say that 99.9% of us would have just assumed those were Affleck's hands or simply not given the moment a second thought! As it turns out, though, those hands belonged to Snyder, and that technically means he actually played Bruce Wayne (for a second at least). @theLupeXperienc @larryfong @IMAX my...

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have released a pretty great new trailer for Kong: Skull Island.
The movie reimagines the origin of the mythic Kong in a compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (“The Kings of Summer”).
In the film, a diverse team of explorers is brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific – as beautiful as it is treacherous – unaware that they’re crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong.
Kong: Skull Island stars Tom Hiddleston (“The Avengers,” “Thor: The Dark World”), Samuel L. For eagle eyed fans, there was plenty of Easter Eggs to be found in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but for probably the most obscure one, finding it had to wait until the release of the movie on Blu-Ray. Brie Larson had a pretty good Saturday at Comic-Con, I think it’s safe to say. She's had to do a fair amount of juggling around this film so far. When she won her Oscar this spring, she had to fly in from where she was shooting Kong: Skull Island to do so, and Saturday, they had to pull her away from her press duties for Kong: Skull Island to take the stage in Hall H to announce that she is officially signed to play Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers, in what will easily be one of the most eagerly awaited films Marvel has ever made. Without question, the most divisive superhero movie in recent memory – maybe even of all time – came in the form of Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Following the trailer release yesterday for its extended Blu-ray/DVD edition, one of the key people involved in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" says don't expect the half-hour longer 'Ultimate Cut' of the film to change your mind.
Cinematographer Larry Fong tweeted a few hours ago: "Those of you who are fans, will dig it. If you hated it, you'll still hate it." The new cut of the film clocks in at 182 minutes - decidedly longer than the 151 minute cut of the theatrical version.
Fong previously worked with director Snyder on "300," "Watchmen" and "Sucker Punch" but is not working on "Justice League Part One" - he's been replaced by Fabian Wagner ("Game of Thrones," "DaVinci's Demons").
