Although he enjoyed great success on Broadway in John Patrick's play "The Teahouse Of The August Moon", he was not initially cast in the same role in the 1956 film version. However, Louis Calhern, who had replaced him, died suddenly at the start of filming and Ford came in at the last minute. He got rave reviews for the film.
