Steve Miller has led many musical lives. First he was the guitar-wielding Space Cowboy who blew minds with the blues in the psychedelic San Fransisco of the late ’60s. Then he morphed into the laid-back Joker, crackin’ wise amid the slightly more self-serious singer/songwriters of the early ’70s. He graduated to full scale arena rocker in the middle of the decade with amped-up hits like “Rock ‘N Me” and “Take the Money and Run,” and by the ’80s songs like “Abracadabra” made him a video star on a nascent MTV. Now the icon is looking back on his remarkable musical journey with Ultimate Hits,...

A Peter Frampton show took a turn for the worse on Sunday night, leaving fans confused and angry with the British rocker.
Concertgoers took to social media to recount a “meltdown” Frampton had while opening for The Steve Miller Band at the Treasure Island Resort and Casino in Red Wing, Minnesota.
According to the accounts, the performer halted the show when a cameraman focused on a fan holding up a Frampton Comes Alive album instead of Frampton himself as he played a solo.

TV viewers got to watch Keith Urban have the time of his life Wednesday night as he took home four Cmt awards, but he and superstar wife, Nicole Kidman, also were just as fun to watch when the cameras weren’t looking.
Of course Kidman is our favorite habitual sing-alonger at these events, and she didn’t disappoint – avidly mouthing the words to several songs besides her husband’s. And Urban is among the most attentive listeners to other performances, this time literally getting a kick out of a guitar solo – he punched the air with a high kick after...

On September 6, 1968, Eric Clapton joined The Beatles for a day. It was for the recording of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” The George Harrison-penned song now famously features lead guitar by Clapton, though he wasn’t officially credited on The White Album where the song appeared. The Beatles had made a couple attempts to record “Guitar Gently Weeps” earlier that year, in July and also an electric version on September 5. None of those arrangements were quite coming together. “They weren’t taking it seriously,” Harrison later said of his bandmates. There was already a great deal of of conflict among the group by this point. The next day, Harrison was giving Clapton a ride from Surrey to London, and he asked Clapton to play on the track. Clapton at first balked at the idea, saying “Nobody [else] ever plays on the Beatles’ records.” But he eventually agreed to join the...

Brian De Palma‘s Carrie begins in the soft-haze of a high-school girls’ locker room. The camera lingers of the naked bodies of Carrie’s (Sissy Spacek) abusers and clearly sets them apart from the frail girl who showers by herself. As the others frolic and laugh among themselves, Carrie rests inside of her own body. In close-up, Carrie washes her face, breasts, and abdomen until she reaches her inner thigh. She drops her bar of soap and the lilting score from composer Pino Donaggio changes key into something more sinister when it is revealed that Carrie has begun her first period and menstrual blood slides down the side of her leg. She screams at the arrival of the punishment of Eve, and blood will be a harbinger of everything to come for one Carrie White.

So this summer I've fallen back in love with vinyl, thanks in part to Cc editor Steve Holtje giving me a satchel of essential albums this past winter, thus forcing me to buy a new turntable. It seems like only yesterday when vinyl ruled my world -- when Tower Records was part of my weekly Saturday routine, when vinyl was both King and Queen, and when analog music was so much easier on the ears and a much more enjoyable listening experience. (And one had to actually participate in said experience by flipping the album over after one side was finished playing.) Now I get to replace most of the vinyl I sold or gave away with either 180 gram, remastered versions or pristine used copies found in thrift shops or on the numerous Facebook vinyl user groups I've recently joined. Please indulge me as I "wax" poetic about three new...

I recently posted a Joe Walsh song on my Facebook wall and the reaction was mixed. One commenter wrote, "Walsh always struck me as the real-life Spicoli, and that was about as seriously as I could take him." This is a common misconception about Walsh.
Walsh has had a music career of over five decades. There are many, many people who know of him mostly as a member of the Eagles (since 1975) who had a hit in 1978 with a funny song, "Life's Been Good." Yet Walsh was a music biz veteran of eleven years’ standing when Hotel California was released in 1976; he would not have been recruited into the Eagles if he had not already established himself as such a distinctive guitarist that he could instantly give them the rock cred they so desired. Already on his resume were the killer riffs of "Rocky Mountain Way," "Turn to Stone," "Walk Away,...

The sold-out crowd at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena learned Tuesday night there are some things Luke Bryan just won't do. One is this: If Keith Urban and Vince Gill are in his backup band, he's not going to ignore them. That's why, halfway through a magical stripped-down acoustic version of "Strip It Down," Bryan simply turned around to face the two guitar masters behind him. "If I'm gonna play and sing with Keith Urban and Vince Gill," he announced between verses, "I want to watch them." Urban couldn't resist commenting on the about-face, suggesting with some Aussie sauciness, that the...

You may not directly recall the name of director Richard Marquand, though in many ways he’s a notable director from the 1980s thanks to items like the pulpy Glenn Close courtroom drama Jagged Edge (1985), and a Ken Follett adaptation Eye of the Needle (1981). Oh, and he happened to helm Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi in 1983. The British director died of a stroke at the age of forty nine, which explains the abrupt end of a flourishing filmography. He made the jump from documentary and television series to feature with the forgotten 1978 British horror film The Legacy, which starred notable American stars (and real life couple) Katharine Ross and Sam Elliott. Based on a story by Jimmy Sangster, a writer of many Hammer Studio films, the screenplay was also co-written by Patrick Tilley (his last credit) and Paul Wheeler (who would exclusively work in television afterwards). Rob counts down the top 50 episodes of TV's longest-running animated series, The Simpsons...
Since its debut in 1989, across 552 episodes and 25 seasons, The Simpsons has become one of the most revered and beloved TV programmes of all time. It’s a true cultural phenomenon that’s influenced not just animation, but all areas of TV comedy and sitcom. For so many of us, its quotes and catchphrases have permeated our everyday vernacular, from single words like “crisitunity” and “embiggen” to phrases “you don’t win friends with salad” and “everything’s coming up Milhouse.”
Personal opinions may vary, but for me the show’s peak years were from season 4 through to 10. They’re consistently funny, all killer and no filler runs with barely a dud episode to be found between 1992-1998. Past this point the standard becomes a little more mixed, and recent seasons have been distinctly average at best. The...

One of the top trending stories on Facebook for the last several days was about guitarist Peter Frampton grabbing a fan’s video phone during a concert and throwing in to the back reaches of the venue. Frampton came alive after a concertgoer in the front row kept filming Frampton, despite signs that explicitly stated no taping and no flash photography. And according to the story, from OnStageMagazine.com, this dude didn’t just stop with one song, he was continuously holding up the camera and filming. And we all know how much fun it is to stand behind that guy at shows. Even though Frampton had supposedly gestured for them to stop, the wanna-be filmmaker kept going and even turned his back to the stage to take a selfie. At that point, Frampton got the phone, under the guise of taking a photo with the fan, and, instead, threw...

Documentary film-maker and political activist best known for Blacks Britannica and Occupied Palestine
The Oscar-nominated documentary-maker and political activist David Koff, who has died aged 74, was remarkable in that his work made waves on four continents. Best known in Britain for his film Blacks Britannica (1978), which portrayed the UK as a profoundly racist society, he also caused controversy with his trilogy about colonialism and its after-effects in Africa, his documentary Occupied Palestine (1981) – which led to a bomb threat at its premiere – and his more recent exposés of the plight of migrant workers in the Us.
A tall, striking, figure with a pony-tail and beard, he was a familiar sight on picket lines and demonstrations throughout California. Behind the calm and genial manner was a steely resolve. His films, like his politics, were concerned with the underdog, the immigrant or the dispossessed – people who Koff felt did not have a voice.

Ascap, home to such classics as Peter Frampton's "Baby, I Love Your Way," Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called to Say I Love You" and 9 million other works, has long looked after royalties for its almost 500,000 members -- artists like Goo Goo Dolls' John Rzeznik, who boasts, "You

After seeing the list of Cmt’s 2013 Artists of the Year — Tim McGraw, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Hunter Hayes, and Florida Georgia Line — we had to echo the thoughts of host Ron White at the top of Tuesday night’s show: “You couldn’t find one girl? There’s more sausage backstage than Jimmy Dean’s freezer.” But there’s no denying that the six men dominated country radio this year, and they had some seriously famous admirers on hand to prove it.

Stephen Colbert and the writers of his eponymous Comedy Central late night show took the stage at the New York Comedy Festival on Thursday night, sharing Colbert Report secrets with a packed audience of fans at Manhattan's Town Hall. During the 90-minute panel, Colbert and Co. talked about how they come up with ideas for the show and revealed the stories behind wild onscreen moments. The craziest thing they ever did, though, didn't entirely make it to air. As part of their 2006 "Guitarmageddon" special in which a supergroup of Colbert and Peter Frampton competed against The Decemberists, they

Earlier this month we published a list of 20 cover songs that became more famous than the originals. From Whitney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You" to Sinead O'Connor's breathy remake of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2U," the list scanned some of the best renditions in music history.
There's another realm of cover songs we didn't include in the last post, however, which is where our list of unexpected covers comes in. We've put together the strangest and most unpredictable song selections of artists like Johnny Cash, Tom Waits and Dusty Springfield. Scroll through the list below and let us know your thoughts on the world of reimagined tunes in the comments.
1. "Hurt" by Johnny Cash (original by Nine Inch Nails)

David Koff's documentary Occupied Palestine caused a storm in the 1980s. What will today's audiences make of it? The film-maker relives a life of controversy
David Koff is remembering what happened at the premiere of his film Occupied Palestine in San Francisco in 1981. "There were probably 1,000 people in the audience," he recalls. "Ten minutes after the film started, there was an announcement: 'There's been a bomb threat – please evacuate the building.' The police and fire department were called. There was a remarkable atmosphere in the cinema when the film finally went ahead."
Koff, now 73, is an American documentary film-maker, writer, union organiser and activist. He grew up in California, graduated in political science from Stanford University, then worked in Sierra Leone, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and London before returning to the Us. His documentary-making career has never lacked controversy. In the early 1970s, with the assistance of colleague Anthony Howarth...

Johannesburg — The story of Sixto Rodriguez, the greatest protest singer and songwriter that most people never heard of, is a real-life fairytale with a Hollywood finale.
In his latest incarnation, the guitarist has unwittingly become a champion for the rights of wronged musicians.
The Detroit construction worker whose albums flopped in the United States in the 1970s wants to know what happened to royalties in South Africa, where he unknowingly was elevated to rock star status.
While Rodriguez toiled in the Motor City, white liberals thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean burdened by the horrors of the apartheid regime were inspired by his songs protesting the Vietnam War, racial inequality, abuse of women and social mores.
Songs composed half a century ago that some equate to "inner-city poetry" still are relevant today: Like his poke at the pope's stance on birth control, and his plaints about corrupt politicians and bored housewives.

This is really cool! The man in the middle of the fantastic documentary, "Searching for Sugar Man," is going to record again! According to THR, Sixto Rodriguez is thinking of giving newfound fans another album -- his first in over 40 years!
And this April, he's set to visit my hood in Palm Springs for the Coachella Musica and Arts Festival! I can't wait to see him!
Rodriguez will be working with Steve Rowland (they collaborated before in one of Rodriguez's albums; he also discovered Peter Frampton and The Cure).

You knew it was an Important Night on The Voice because not once did social-media dingbat Christina Milian begin one of her excruciating interview segments by screeching her go-to salutation, “Hey-ey, what’s Up, Carrr-son?”
But that wasn’t the only holiday miracle on the Season 3 finale: With a two-hour running time for an announcement that could’ve/should’ve been handled in 15 seconds, odds were that the telecast would wind up feeling interminable. Barring an early Mayan apocalypse, we all know that Tate Stevens and Carly Rose Sonenclar will make it to the X Factor finale, so there's not much to discuss there. The real race is between Simon Cowell's two remaining groups, Emblem3 and Fifth Harmony, as there's seemingly room for only one of them.
The thing is, we won't actually know who's bringing up the rear after this next elimination because the leaderboard is now officially in "blackout" mode, meaning they won't be revealing how the numbers shake out in...
