Born into a wealthy family of art collectors, she studied art history and thought about becoming a curator. For a trip to Asia, her cousin lent her a camera, and she discovered her talent for photography. She was hired as an intern at Time Life Magazine, assisting foreign photo journalists, and was soon freelancing for Vogue, Life, and Sports Illustrated.
