If you're unlucky enough to find yourself stationed at U.S. Outpost 31, there's a good chance you won't make it home in the same body you arrived there in. There's also a good chance you won't make it home at all. That's because U.S. Outpost 31 is home to the creepy, body-stealing alien that terrorized a group of American researchers in John Carpenter's 1982 "The Thing." The film — which is a remake of the 1951 movie "The Thing from Another World" and based on the 1938 novella "Who Goes There?" — initially bombed in theaters, but has gone on to become a beloved sci-fi horror classic, now largely praised for its paranoid atmosphere, awesome special effects, and character-driven plot.
At the start of the movie, there are 12 men living at the Antarctic research station, but by the end, only two remain: R.J. MacReady (Kurt Russell) and Childs who is played by Keith David.

It's always interesting to see what happens when a director tries their hand at a film unlike any they've made before or since. Consider David Fincher's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," a whimsical romantic fantasy drama far removed tonally from the grim thrillers and dark character studies the masses are accustomed to seeing from the "Se7en" and "Social Network" helmer.
John Carpenter's "Starman" is his "Benjamin Button," at least in that respect. There are times the 1984 sci-fi film recalls the director's down-and-dirty action flicks, just as there are visuals and scenes that speak to his horror oeuvre. But for the most part, "Starman" plays out as a love story by road movie, albeit where one of the leads is a visitor from a distant planet. That would be the titular character, a cordial extra-terrestrial being who crash-lands on Earth after their spacecraft is shot down by...

It’s a relatively quiet week for home entertainment releases, but Tuesday is playing host to one of my favorite films of the year, Ready or Not, which makes December 3rd feel like an early Christmas to this writer. Scream Factory is showing some love to John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China with multiple editions (including the standard Collector’s Edition as well as the absolutely gorgeous limited edition Steelbook), and Konga, one of my favorite cult films (thank you Terror in the Aisles!) is headed to Blu on Tuesday, courtesy of Kino Lorber.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for December 3rd include Boar, Christmas Presence, Game of Thrones: The Complete Eighth Season, Game of Thrones: The Complete Series, and 1 Must Fall.

While John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China is infinitely quotable thanks to Kurt Russell's performance as the imperfect protagonist Jack Burton, every great reluctant hero needs a great villain, and James Hong's portrayal of the evil Lo Pan gave us a character who is just as memorable as his truck-driving counterpart. With Big Trouble in Little China coming to Blu-ray like never before in a new Collector's Edition on December 3rd from Scream Factory, we've been provided with an exclusive bonus feature clip featuring Hong to share with Daily Dead readers!
Taken from "The Soul of Lo Pan" bonus feature on the Big Trouble in Little China Collector's Edition Blu-ray, our exclusive clip below features Hong reflecting on some of his most memorable moments playing Lo Pan, including how Carpenter and his crew used practical effects and ingenuity to pull off Lo Pan's glowing transformation and floating ability.

Coming off one of its most contentious years in history, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences has sent out its list of candidates for its Board of Governors elections late this month.
The Board of Governors directs the Academy’s strategic vision, preserves the organization’s financial health, and assures the fulfillment of its mission.
Governors attend 6-8 board meetings annually (in person or by video conference when out of town). Each Governor also serves on one board oversight committee and their branch’s executive committee, and they are expected to represent their branch at numerous Academy events through the year.
Governors have fiduciary responsibilities imposed by state law to serve the Academy’s best interests, by acting with responsibility and care when approving annual goals presented by management, as well as major policies concerning governance.
CEO Dawn Hudson oversees a staff of more than 300 who conduct the Academy’s day-to-day business.

Looking for something to watch this Valentine’s Day? Here’s why John Carpenter’s sci-fi romance Starman is worth another look…
This feature contains minor spoilers for Starman. If you haven’t seen the film, please read on with caution.
John Carpenter hasn’t made too many conventional date movies. Films like Halloween, Escape From New York, and his thematic Apocalypse trilogy don’t typically get couples in the mood for love. Nevertheless, he made a doozy of a romance in the form of 1984’s Starman, which stars an Oscar-nominated Jeff Bridges and an equally great Karen Allen as an unlikely couple who take a road trip across America.
Starting with the 1977 launch of the Voyager 2 space probe, which carries a golden record full of samples of Earth culture and greetings in 57 different languages, the film is about an alien who answers mankind’s invitation to extra-terrestrial life.

The fourth Jp movie gets a new director: indie filmmaker Trevorrow Colin Trevorrow, whose well-received, (very) low-budget, independently made feature Safety Not Guaranteed won the Screenwriting Award at last year's Sundance Festival, has been named the director of the upcoming Jurassic Park sequel Jurassic Park 4. (Pictured above: Nope, that's not Trevorrow, but the 1993 Jurassic Park's imposing star, Mr. Tyrannosaurus Rex.) Now, why would Universal and executive producer Steven Spielberg bring this particular indie filmmaker aboard the billionaire Jp frachise? Well, why specifically Trevorrow is impossible to say. Yet, it seems clear that his handling of a science-fiction narrative about time travel played an important role in his selection. Another plus: He was surely cheaper than bigger names associated with action films. And let's not forget another crucial aspect of his selection: The director, whose innovative Safety Not Guaranteed was warmly greeted by critics, may bring to the increasingly paleozoic (i.

June 25, 1982, was a good day for genre fans. Hell, that summer saw a spate of genre classics released, including "The Road Warrior," "Poltergeist," and "E.T." But June 25th in particular saw not only the release, as we discussed earlier today, of "Blade Runner," but also another legendary sci-fi picture, which like Ridley Scott's film, wasn't well-received at the time, and flopped at the box office, but went on to be enshrined in the geek hall of fame. No, it's not Barry Bostwyck vehicle "MegaForce," but John Carpenter's terrifying "The Thing," which despite the efforts of last year's poor retread/prequel, remains one of the greatest sci-fi/horrors ever made.
Technically a remake of Howard Hawks' well-loved 1951 "The Thing From Another World," which Carpenter pays tribute to in the opening moments, the new film took a very different approach, ramping up both the paranoia and the eye-popping physical effects,...

Roland Emmerich's latest big-budget sci-fi feature "Singularity" has been put on hold at Sony Pictures reports The Wrap.
The $175 million film was scheduled to begin production in March but will now be pushed back in the wake of script revisions that will need to be done.
The story follows a nanotechnology pioneer who transfers his injured son's consciousness into nanobots that take his physical form.
Emmerich and Harald Kloser penned the screenplay while Larry J. Franco and Koser are producing. No actors have been attached as yet.
Futurist Ray Kurzweil, one of the world's leading experts in the field the film explores, has been enlisted to help. His book "The Singularity is Near" speculates that the line between humans, machines, reality and virtual reality will grow increasingly blurred in the future.

The Shakespeare authorship question is a debate that started over one hundred years ago surrounding the identity of the works traditionally attributed to the bearded Bard from Stratford-Upon-Avon, William Shakespeare. Was he really the genius behind Hamlet.s tragic life, Romeo.s burning love, and Lady Macbeth.s plaguing guilt? Could the intellectual behind literature.s most brilliant characters be this very ordinary man from Stratford?
So little is known about the man from Stratford that many find it impossible to believe that the son of an illiterate tradesman was the author of such literary masterpieces as .The Merchant of Venice,. .King Lear,. and .Henry V.. His education from a village school could never have provided Shakespeare with a vocabulary extensive enough to write the most talked about literature in the world and there is no proof that he travelled to foreign lands let alone learnt to speak their native tongues.

Rhys Ifans character profile and Rafe Spall character profile videos from Anonymous. Roland Emmerich's Anonymous looks quite excellent and one I'd like to visit at some point myself. The Sony Pictures release debuts on October 28th nationawide and also stars Vanessa Redgrave, Sebastian Armesto, David Thewlis, Edward Hogg, Xavier Samuel, Sebastian Reid, Jamie Campbell Bower and Joely Richardson. Emmerich directs from the writing by John Orloff, as well as producing alongside Larry J. Franco and Robert Leger. Set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, Anonymous speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds such as Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, and Sigmund Freud, namely: who actually created the body of work credited to William Shakespeare? Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English literature.

Check out the new poster for Roland Emmerich’s Anonymous due in theaters this Fall. (Shrugs shoulders). What’s your thoughts? In case you missed it, here’s another look at the trailer.
Synopsis:
Set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, Anonymous speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds ranging from Mark Twain and Charles Dickens to Henry James and Sigmund Freud, namely: who was the author of the plays credited to William Shakespeare? Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English literature. Anonymous poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when cloak-and-dagger political intrigue, illicit romances in the Royal Court, and the schemes of greedy nobles hungry for the power of the throne were exposed in the most unlikely of places: the London stage.

If you don’t know about 2012 by now, then you either don’t own a television, live somewhere where billboards are banned, have no Internet access or haven’t been keeping track of Starlog’s coverage of the blockbuster Sf-action film that premiered Friday to record box office. And if you don’t know about 2012 director Roland Emmerich by now, then you must not be a fan of disaster flicks, because the 21st Century’s “Master of Disaster” is also the man behind Independence Day, Godzilla and The Day After Tomorrow.
