Now that "Dune: Part Two" has arrived and passed multiple box office milestones, director Denis Villeneuve can claim to have done the impossible and successfully adapted Frank Herbert's "unfilmable" 1965 novel. 2021's "Dune" and the sequel's critical and commercial triumphs are well-earned, too, with Villeneuve and his team delivering a truly epic sci-fi two-parter that immerses viewers in a world that feels at once alien and believably real.
The Oscar-winning effects in "Dune" and its sequel create an impressive sense of scale, but they're also remarkable for achieving such a feat without making the films feel akin to the blockbuster CGI-fests we're used to in the modern age. Villeneuve, cinematographer Greig Fraser, and production designer Patrice Vermette managed to craft a world that feels visceral and convincing throughout, despite the heavy use of visual effects. Of course, filming on location in the deserts of Jordan and Abu Dhabi helped a lot in that regard,...

Dune Part Three is a go! And just in time to try out the new 2nd generation of IMAX film cameras. Part One was shot on the Alexa Lf. Part Two was shot on the Arri 65. Thus, Part Three must be shot on the new and advanced IMAX film cameras. Don’t you think?

Four months into 2024, and it’s already shaping up to be an exceptionally strong year for cinematography, with several standout films that represent the art form at its apex. Perhaps what’s most welcome about these films is their variety, not only in terms of genre and tone but also budget and position in the marketplace. From the studio system, we have Greig Fraser’s extraordinary work on “Dune: Part Two,” which doubles down on the ambition and tactile detail of Fraser’s work on its predecessor (for which he justly received an Academy Award) to create one of the most flat-out beautiful epics since the glory days of David Lean. From the world of low-budget, independent filmmaking, we have “I Saw the TV Glow,” where cinematographer Eric Yue designs a meticulous and expressive visual corollary for his protagonist’s inner state.

In Denis Villeneuve's 2021 sci-fi epic "Dune: Part One," Jason Momoa plays Duncan Idaho, a Gonaz Swordmaster in the service of House Atreides. He was robust and friendly, kind to the young Paul (Timothée Chalamet), and capable in a fight; he famously killed multiple Sardaukar warriors before being overwhelmed and slain during a Harkonnen raid on the Atrides' mansion in Arrakeen. Despite this, Frank Herbert's second "Dune" book, "Dune Messiah," sees Duncan return as a clone, Indeed, Duncan clones, called "gholas," appeared throughout Herbert's six original novels, making Duncan Idaho the only "Dune" character to hold that distinction.

Steven Spielberg can’t stop thinking about Timothée Chalamet atop a sandworm in Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two.”
The director praised Villeneuve during an installment of the DGA’s “Director’s Cut” podcast, where Spielberg welcomed Villeneuve to the club of filmmakers who are the “builders of worlds” onscreen.
“It’s an honor for me to sit here and talk to you. Let me start by saying there are filmmakers who are the builders of worlds. It’s not a long list and we know who a lot of them are,” Spielberg said. “Starting with [Georges] Méliès and Disney and Kubrick, George Lucas. Ray Harryhausen, I include in that list. [Frederico] Fellini built his own worlds. Tim Burton. Obviously Wes Anderson, Peter Jackson, James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott, Guillermo del Toro. If the $579 million at the box office and 93% Rotten Tomatoes score weren’t enough, Quebecois director Denis Villeneuve got one of the greatest boosts one can receive in his field. None other than Steven Spielberg, who knows a thing or two about science fiction, interviewed the “Dune: Part Two” director for the DGA’s “Director’s Cut” podcast, and told him “you have made one of the most brilliant science fiction films I’ve ever seen.”

In narrative time, “Dune: Part Two” starts just three hours after the first “Dune” ends, but the decision to open the film in the middle of an eclipse makes it feel like a completely different world.
During a recent interview for IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, filmmaker Denis Villeneuve referred to his “idea of the eclipse at the beginning as a tool” to bring an “aesthetic shock” to his sequel. While this choice is motivated by how Paul (Timothée Chalamet) and his mother, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), feel out of place in the desert world of the Fremen, it also gave Villeneuve and his team permission to wipe the color palette clean and choose lighting and camera techniques that cinematographer Greig Fraser called “left of center” in the film’s press notes.

Denis Villeneuve delivered a masterpiece with his latest film, Dune 2. Accolades have been pouring in for the director since adapting Frank Herbert’s novel was not an easy task. And yet, Villeneuve did it so well, which is a testament to his genius as a filmmaker.
Notwithstanding his innate talents for storytelling, Villeneuve has slowly and carefully built up his skills behind the lens. He has been directing for years now, and it puts him in a unique position to spot an individual with a keen interest in learning the ropes of the craft. He noticed it in Zendaya, who was as spectacular in front of the camera as she was interested in knowing her way around behind it.

Have you noticed that a lot of science-fiction movies haven't felt so fictional of late? Oh sure, the genre has always been about our real-world problems in the present day. Yet, as technology has caught up to our collective imaginations, a lot of would-be fantastical representations of the future have come to resemble our current hellscape but either slightly shinier and/or dingier and with A.I. that's capable of more than cranking out fake YouTube film trailer screencaps of men standing behind nude women. Even movies set thousands of years from now on distant planets tend to be about the all-too-topical concern of young white twinks embracing fascism (much to the dismay of their progressive girlfriends).
As dour and sometimes surreal as these movies are, they're also excellent vehicles for filmmakers to talk about the biggest issues of the day and, in doing so, perhaps make them feel just...

Even if you're not particularly partial to the bleak blockbuster action of Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two," you've got to respect the craft that went into making the sequel and its predecessor. "Dune" and "Dune: Part Two" are impressive technical achievements that maintain a suitably epic and consistently immersive look throughout, but crafting such majestic visuals wasn't easy.
For "Dune: Part Two," for instance, most of the movie takes place in the desert of the arid, unforgiving planet Arrakis. That meant that Villeneuve, cinematographer Greig Fraser, and production designer Patrice Vermette spent an ungodly amount of time trudging through the deserts of Jordan and Abu Dhabi in search of the perfect sand dune. As such, creating the planet Arrakis for "Dune: Part Two" left Villeneuve "sand traumatized" — and that wasn't the only tough part of the shoot.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman and Denis Villeneuve’s Dunes: Part One share a unique but fascinating connection: their cinematography. Both films, despite being modern releases, boast a visual style reminiscent of the 1970s. This unique appearance was achieved by meticulous design.
Robert Pattinson as Batman
Reeves and his cinematographer Greg Fraser took a unique approach to capturing the visual elements of The Batman. Taking inspiration from gritty 1970s thrillers like Clute and All the President’s Men, they’ve deliberately opted for classic anamorphic lenses.

“Desert power.” That’s how Denis Villeneuve teases what’s to come at the end of 2021’s “Dune,” as Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atriedes looks out across the desert in awe as he sees a Fremen person riding a sandworm.
And Villeneuve does not disappoint. The director goes full white-knuckle thrill ride in its sequel, orchestrating a glorious sandworm riding sequence that took 44 days to shoot. It was the most complex thing Villeneuve had ever attempted to do. It needed to feel edgy, dangerous, exciting and real.
It took Villeneuve’s most-trusted collaborators to help him pull off the scene, in which Paul uses the thumper for the first time to draw a sandworm out from beneath the surface and mount the creature as Chani (Zendaya), Stilgar (Javier Bardem) and the Fremen look on.

If we’re going to praise the visual rapture of Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” movies—and we should—and in particular, the newly released “Dune: Part Two,” there’s no conversation that can happen without mention of Academy Award-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser, who won his first Oscar for “Dune” in 2022.

Timothée Chalamet’s Dune: Part Two evidently lives up to the hype of the first installment in terms of cinematography and production design. The breathtaking views of the arid deserts and the stunning visuals of the architecture are indeed worthy of an Oscar nod.

“Oppenheimer” lenser Hoyte van Hoytema took top honors from the American Society of Cinematographers on Sunday. He edged out all four of his Oscar rivals for Best Cinematography: Edward Lachman (“El Conde”), Matthew Libatique (“Maestro”), Rodrigo Prieto (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Robbie Ryan (“Poor Things”).
Over its 38-year history, the ASC has predicted 152 of the 190 Oscar nominees, including four in 2019, 2020 and 2021 and all five this year and in both 2018 and 2017. Last year, it previewed three of the Best Cinematography contenders — Roger Deakins (“Empire of Light”), Darius Khondji (“Bardo”) and Mandy Walker (“Elvis”). While Walker won over the ASC, she lost the Oscar to “All Quiet on the Western Front” lenser James Friend.
Indeed, the ASC choice for the best in the business has presaged the eventual winner at the Oscars only 17 times:
Dean Semler, “Dances with Wolves” (1991)
John Toll, “Braveheart” (1996)
John Seale, “The English Patient” (1997)

For “Dune: Part Two,” Denis Villeneuve delved deep into the Arabian desert and spent almost a month shooting in Abu Dhabi’s Liwa Oasis, which provided a substantial portion of the landscape of the desert planet Arrakis, home to the monstrous sandworms.
Villeneuve praised the location and services provided by the Abu Dhabi Film Commission and UAE-based production services company Epic Films in a promotional behind-the-scenes video, to which Variety has been given exclusive access.
“‘Dune’ is about the relationship of humans with nature,” Villeneuve says in the promo that also features testimonials from Zendaya, Javier Bardem, Rebecca Ferguson and cinematographer Greig Fraser, among others.
“It was important for me to bring that nature to the screen,” adds the director, so that the audience will believe it “if they feel that there is something that feels real, that feels tactile.”

In a stunning cinematic universe where sand dunes rise like mountains and the fate of galaxies hangs in the balance, Denis Villeneuve’s first voyage into the Frank Herbert’s “Dune” saga clinched six of its 10 Oscar nominations. Yet, in a twist as dramatic as Dr. Wellington killing Duke Leto, Villeneuve found himself overlooked in the best director category — a snub that left fans (and pundits) in disbelief. I dare the Academy’s Directors Branch to make such an omission once again.
As “Dune: Part Two” unfolds, we dive back into the treacherous universe alongside Paul Atreides, played by the ever-charismatic Timothée Chalamet. Seeking vengeance for his father’s death (Oscar Isaac), Paul’s journey intertwines with new allies and enemies, portrayed by a constellation of stars including Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Javier Bardem and Christopher Walken.

It took a village of Denis Villeneuve’s most trusted artisans to pull off “Dune: Part Two’s” epic Harkonnen arena fight scene.
As epic as its predecessor, Villeneuve’s sequel raises the bar with striking visuals. None is more jaw-dropping than Feyd-Rautha’s (Austin Butler) celebration sequence. The grand fight occurs early on in the film as the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard) and Lady Margot Fenring (Lea Seydoux) join the inhabitants of Giedi Prime to watch. It was up to cinematographer Greig Fraser who shot the sequence on black-and-white infrared to deliver Villeneuve’s vision.
Fraser was no stranger to using infrared lighting.
He had used it on 2012’s “Zero Dark Thirty” and 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” “It’s the same light the security camera uses, and you don’t see it. So, my fascination with infrared started because our eyes can’t see it,...

Denis Villenueve’s follow-up to the 2021 sci-fi epic Dune has arrived in theaters and everyone is going crazy about the film since its release. The film has been lauded by both critics and audiences for not falling into the ‘sequel trap’ as it successfully extended upon the lore established by the first film while also fleshing out core characters in exciting ways.
A still from Dune: Part Two
The film’s ending left Paul Atreides in an interesting place, a significant evolution from his arc in the first film. Many fans were expecting a post-credits scene of some sort as the MCU has made that trend popular. However, director Villeneuve wanted part 2 to stand on its own and not rely on the tease of what’s to come.

One of the most notable features in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is the black-and-white aesthetics used in Austin Butler’s scenes. While viewers may assume this is another stylistic choice to amplify the ruthlessness of the Giedi Prime and its inhabitants, there is actually a deeper, more complex meaning.

Plot: Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) continues his war against the Harkonens. But, he realizes that the Fremen consider him more of a messiah than a leader and is tormented by not only the prospect of defeat but of victory too.
Review: Back in the dark days of the pandemic, one of the true moviegoing tragedies was that enough people didn’t see Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part One on the big screen. With many of the set pieces being shot for IMAX, it was an altogether different experience in cinemas than it was streaming. Had it come out at a different time, it would have made at least double the still impressive $108 million it made domestically. With the sequel hitting theatres, this will likely be the first time a huge chunk of the audience is seeing Villeneuve’s adaptation of the Frank Herbert classic the way it was meant to be seen,...

Superbly acted and beautiful to look at, Dune: Part Two is 2024’s first truly great multiplex film from director Denis Villeneuve. Here’s our review:
There’s the old saying that by trying to please everybody, you end up pleasing no one. To his credit, director Denis Villeneuve has somehow managed to forge a path through mainstream filmmaking without sacrificing the understated, arthouse sensibility that has marked out his work since the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Dune: Part Two, like its 2021 opening chapter, may be a space fantasy shot on an IMAX scale, but it’s also every bit as personal, human and intimate as Villeneuve’s earlier, more raw films like Polytechnique (2009) or Incendies (2010). It also might be the most darkly enthralling $190m-plus sci-fi film ever made.
Ahead of Dune: Part Two’s release, there have been some suggestions that it’s possible to watch this film without having seen the first.

At 28, Timothée Chalamet is five years older than he was when he shot Denis Villeneuve’s first iteration of “Dune” (2021), adapted by Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts from Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi saga, which Villeneuve had adored since his early teens and had the sense to split into two parts. That film ran 155 minutes and cost $165 million against a pandemic global gross of $404 million, controversially released day and date by Warner Bros. in theaters and on HBO Max. It scored 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and won six craft categories.

The follow-up to 2021’s Dune: Part One, director Denis Villeneuve’s new film Dune: Part Two, continues the hero’s journey of Paul Atreides as he sets out to exact revenge on those who brought his family to ruin. What is remarkable though is that, not only is part two of the series even more compelling and beautiful than the first installment, but it also succeeds in making a forthcoming third film in the series – adapted from the book Dune Messiah (1969) by Frank Herbert – less daunting and more of a must-see event than it might have been otherwise (especially since the series was originally intended to last only two films before the first was released).

From uncertainties about the saga’s eventual success – which in retrospect makes us all wonder how studio executives thought this could ever flop at the box office – to the numerous changes in its release date, Dune: Part Two took its time to reach audiences all over the world… but here we are, with one of the most anticipated sequels of the century finally landing on the big screens. As an avid fan of sci-fi/fantasy epics, of Denis Villeneuve – my favorite contemporary filmmaker – and, of course, his first film from 2021, my expectations could not have been set any higher.
Dune: Part Two continues the story of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) who now joins forces with Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen to avenge the conspiracy that destroyed his family. Faced with a choice between love and the fate of the universe, Paul must fight to avoid the terrible future only he can foresee.

The long awaited follow-up to Denis Villeneuve’s awe-inspiring adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, Dune is finally upon us and it is every bit as impressive as expected. Often dubbed as unfilmable – David Lynch’s ill-fated adaptation of the novel in 1984 being a prime example – Herbert’s tome has clearly benefited from Villeneuve’s decision to break the story into several parts – Part 3 is undoubtedly in the works.
The forthcoming sequel reunites audiences with Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides and his Fremen allies in a gripping battle to reclaim their homeland against the encroaching threat. Meanwhile, Zendaya, whom we briefly saw in the first film, reprises her part as young Fremen warrior Shani, who also happens to be Paul’s love interest.

Dune: Part Two releases to theaters March 1st.
It’s finally here, and believe me… it’s worth the wait. With an original release date of November 3, 2023, the science-fiction sequel was pushed to March of 2024 amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes. It was a disappointing blow at the time; however, the delay was understandable, and even necessary, given the tumultuous circumstances of the time.
Dune: Part Two Plot
Following the events of Dune, house Atreides has fallen from power. The Atreides lineage is all but exterminated at the hands of the menacing Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård). Unbeknownst to the Baron, young Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) has survived and now lives among the Fremen on the dessert planet of Arrakis. Some of the Fremen view Paul as their prophesized savior and leader, but Paul is driven by the need to avenge his father’s murder no matter the cost.

In one of the most arresting sequences in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, the Fremen fighter Chani (Zendaya) teaches the Atreides Duke Paul (Timothée Chalamet) the correct way to sandwalk.
They drag their feet delicately across the arid Arrakis terrain, avoiding the rhythmic pattern that attracts desert sandworms. There’s an understated sweetness to their interactions, a sign of the pair’s growing intimacy. At one point Paul insists on the methods he learned from an anthropological video, and Chani responds with a skeptical and exasperated look. Fremen rituals can’t be fully understood from studying outside texts; the traditions are passed down through generations and exchanged by members of the historically nomadic group.
Fremen society and Paul’s relationship with Chani are among the threads that get more robust consideration in Villeneuve’s highly anticipated sequel. Dune: Part Two maintains the grandiose visual style introduced in Dune while...

The best bit of dialogue from any iteration of Dune was not written by Frank Herbert, but it so perfectly distilled the absurd wonder of his magnum opus that you’d be forgiven for assuming otherwise. “The sleeper has awakened” is less a single moment of David Lynch’s Dune than an entire entry into the thinking-man’s space opera––preposterous and magnetic, as ready for scorn as it is appreciation. To hate it, though, is outing oneself as too serious-minded and too demanding of naturalism, which is to say: not quite in the headspace for Dune.
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune (now known as Part One) was a perfect distillation of its own: titanic in both size and detail, of scale and floridity so impressive there was suspicion he’d set a benchmark for conjuring other worlds onscreen, while often narratively interminable. It’s difficult reconciling one (“that looks so...

Over 15 years since Peter Jackson transported moviegoers to cinematic Middle Earth glory with the triumphant Lord of the Rings trilogy, Denis Villeneuve’s sprawling Dune saga aims to recapture that meticulous world-building spirit and sense of grand fantasy awe. Early reactions indicate March’s Dune: Part Two may achieve just that with the visionary director’s operatic, star-powered sequel earning near-universal raves on par with Jackson’s signature Hobbit highs.
Does Denis Villeneuve’s Dune 2 Match Lotr Battle Scenes?
Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides in Dune 2
As per Variety, after mixed responses to his cerebral first Dune chapter, even skeptical critics now hail Denis Villeneuve’s follow-up as a triumph, one Inverse’s Hoai-Tran Bui calls “Two Towers-level mastery of battle sequences.” The film reportedly outdoes its predecessor on every level, realizing the full scope and emotional power of Frank Herbert’s seminal novel through set pieces and...

Dune: Part Two is one of the most highly-anticipated films of the year and for good reason. With Part One, director Denis Villeneuve brought forth a mesmerizing vision of a psychedelic war epic full of action, drama, and tragedy, while remaining faithful to one of the best and most complex sci-fi novels ever published. Frank Herbert‘s world of scheming, manipulations, combat, prophecies, and drug-induced dreaming comes to life in the desert sands of Villeneuve’s movie. But that film ended on a cliffhanger, with Timothy Chalamet’s Paul Atreides, the promised messiah of Arrakis, taking only his first steps toward his destiny.
The sequel, then, is the story of Paul’s rise to power, as he must rally the Fremen for his war against House Harkonnen after the destruction of his own great house. It’s also the story of his love affair with Zendaya’s Chani, who will...
