Stephen Colbert opened Thursday's "Colbert Report" with a segment on the short-lived by mildly hilarious "Friends of Hamas" non-scandal, which exploded after Breitbart reporter Ben Shapiro wrote that defense secretary nominee Chuck Hagel had given a paid speech to the organization.
Only problem? The organization was a fictional joke, cattily coined by New York Daily News reporter Dan Friedman. Colbert couldn't help but add fuel to the already-funny fire. He demands to know Hagel's further ties to the Lollypop Guild, the Dead Poets Society and exactly why those poets are dead. "Did they know too much about Benghazi?"
He demands that Obama withdraw Hagel's name from consideration, "or you will lose the support of every moderate Republican, another organization that doesn't exist."...

New York Daily News reporter Dan Friedman's said an offhand joke he made about connections between Chuck Hagel and Hamas was taken seriously by conservative news outlets, which then accused the Secretary of Defense nominee of a cover-up. In an op-ed in the Daily News, the reporter said he called a Republican congressional aide to ask about any controversial groups from which Hagel might have received speaking fees. He made up a couple of fake organizations, he said, as a joke. "Hagel was in hot water for alleged hostility to Israel," Friedman...

The consensus is that it's "natural" for Dan Friedman to take over as artistic director of New York's Castillo Theatre. In Friedman's words, it is a "logical and natural progression." In the words of Richard Schechner, editor of The Drama Review, at Friedman's official appointment on April 4, it is "only what should happen in the natural-social-political-artistic order of things."That's largely because Friedman was present when the seeds of this grass-roots theater company were planted. Back in the early '80s, he and the other founders of Castillo utilized their backgrounds as community organizers to raise money for a politically and socially engaged theater. As expected, most people kept walking past the group's streetside tables. Many were just nasty, claiming Friedman was a scam artist. The few who expressed interest would say, " 'This sounds like a great idea, but I don't think you have a chance of a snowball in hell of succeeding,...

In a potentially far-reaching policy change, Google updated its ad trademarks policy in the U.S. to allow some ads to utilize trademarked company names in the text of their paid search ads. "This change (effective from Friday) will bring Google's policy on trademark use in ad text more in line with the industry standard," writes Googler Dan Friedman in the company's AdWords blog. Companies have long complained of competitors who use Google to piggyback off searches that use their trademarked name to capture users attention amid search results. Analysts see the change as a moneymaker for Google as advertisers will likely bid more for such placements, unless owners of the brand names are able to make the legal argument that they amount to copyright infringement.
