Before you start yawning and think you'd rather die than sit through a dutiful, drowsy, ever-so-virtuous biopic about Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American to hold a seat on the Supreme Court, get a grip. Marshall, directed with spiky humor and propulsive drive by Reginald Hudlin, is nothing like that. Drawn from a first-time script by Connecticut lawyer Michael Koskoff and his son Jacob, the film shows us a Marshall that the elder Koskoff insists was "a kick-ass, party-loving, courageous and brilliant lawyer." And as played by a livewire Chadwick Boseman,...

With the movie awards season in full gallop, this week sees the release of a perennial favorite of Academy members: the big screen biography. Now this is a special type of “biopic” in that it doesn’t focus on the entire life (or many years of the life) of the subject, as with films like Ray or The Aviator. Really this new work zeroes in on a year or so of this great person’s career, much as Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln concerned the last few months of the ole’ rail-splitter. Actually this may be closer to John Ford’s terrific Young Mr. Lincoln as it concentrates on a very early case, long before his great fame. And, in a way, this could be considered an “origin” story, much like the initial entries of movie hero franchises (or the first issues of comic book heroes). Yes, this man’s a...

There are two very different explanations for why “Marshall” — ostensibly a biopic about Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court Justice of the United States — isn’t really about Thurgood Marshall so much as it’s about a shaky Jewish lawyer who Marshall once coached through a case. The first (and more generous) of the explanations is that the world could use an inspiring film about different kinds of discriminated against Americans joining forces to fight the prejudice that betrays the promise of the nation they share. The second (and more sincere) of the explanations is that Hollywood still believes that white audiences need an entry point to stories about people who don’t look like them, a Virgil to take them by the hand and guide them — safely and without implication — down through an inferno of intolerance and then out the other side.

Emerging from a courthouse in Bridgeport, Connecticut, two attorneys are besieged by reporters in our exclusive clip from Marshall. Young Jewish lawyer Samuel Friedman (Josh Gad) responds first, offering no comment. Then young Thurgood Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) speaks up, courageously expressing his firmly-held beliefs about the importance of equal protection to all in the U.S. justice system. Marshall is based on an early trial in the storied career of Supreme Court Justice Marshall, as...

It’s hard to believe America’s first black Supreme Court Justice hadn’t yet earned the big screen cinematic treatment until now. Besides Thurgood Marshall appearing as a character in a few TV productions (including HBO’s Emmy-nominated one-man play Thurgood starring Lawrence Fishburne) and two movies (The People vs. Larry Flynt possessing the highest profile), this iconic hero who successfully argued Brown v. Board of Education in front of that same Supreme Court was all but invisible. And that ubiquitous 1954 moment interestingly isn’t even the one screenwriters Jacob and Michael Koskoff chose to adapt as Hollywood’s first mainstream look at him. They decided to go back even further to 1941 so they could highlight the hunger and fight of a young man on the cusp of changing the world.

Though I don't cherish the form I've seen quite a few jukebox musicals in my day. Sometimes they take the biographical route like Jersey Boys. Often they'll sift through the lyrics of some artist's catalogue hoping to yank out phrases and threads from which they can stitch together a frankenstein story. Mammia Mia is either the apotheosis or the nadir of that latter form, depending on your perspective. But what if the jukebox isn't beholden to one composer? Prince of Broadway, which just opened at the Samuel Friedman in NYC, is devoted to the producer Harold Prince who did not write music. So what you have is a greatest hits of, uh, dozens of different composers from a wide range of musicals. If this were a CD it might be called "Now That's What I Call Broadway, Vol. Whatever"

A biographical movie about the early days of a U.S. Supreme Court Justice? Ho-hum, not for me. Or so I thought until I watched this galvanizing trailer for Marshall. Chadwick Boseman, who will soon be known primarily as Black Panther, plays the titular character, surrounded by the likes of Sterling K. Brown, Josh Gad, Kate Hudson, Dan Stevens and James Cromwell. Here's the official synopsis: Long before he sat on the United States Supreme Court or claimed victory in Brown v. I've got a great trailer here for you to watch for a fantastic looking new film called Marshall. The movie based on the true-life events of legendary attorney and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, who is played by Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther, 42). He is joined by Josh Gad (Beauty and the Beast) who takes on the role of Sam Friedman, a lawyer who works alongside Marshall. This looks like it will be quite a powerful film. Here's the synopsis:
Marshall is based on a true incident in the life of Thurgood Marshall, when he was a young lawyer, long before his appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court. As the nation teeters on the brink of WWII, a nearly bankrupt NAACP sends Marshall to conservative Connecticut to defend a black chauffeur against his wealthy socialite employer in a sexual assault and attempted murder trial that quickly became tabloid fodder. In need of a high profile victory but muzzled by a segregationist court, Marshall is partnered with Samuel Friedman, a young Jewish lawyer who has never tried a case. Marshall and Friedman struggle against a hostile storm of fear and prejudice, driven to discover the truth in the sensationalized trial which helped set the groundwork for the Civil Rights Movement to come.
The movie has a very talented cast of actors that also includes Kate Hudson (Almost Famous), Dan Stevens (The Guest), James Cromwell (Babe), Sterling K. Brown (The People vs. O.J. Simpson) and Keesha Sharp (The People v. O.J. Simpson).
Reginald Hudlin is directing the film and it's set to be released on October 13th.

Chadwick Boseman may have only recently thrilled audiences in the debut trailer for The Black Panther but now we get to witness the star in the making in a completely different role in the new trailer for Marshall.
The story focuses on Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court justice in his early years as a young lawyer tasked with defending a black chauffeur in a highly publicised sexual assault case. Paired with young Jewish lawyer Friedman in a segregationist court, he’s forced to fight prejudice as he and Friedman work their case — which helped set the stage for the future Civil Rights Movement.
In a recent statement director, Reginald Hudlin wanted to state this was far from a biopic and hits all the right notes for a thriller “It’s a thriller, not a biopic, about an early case of one of the greatest lawyers in American history. In a time when we need heroes who fight for justice, Marshall is an inspirational movie that brings people together. And it’s a lot more fun than anyone expects.”
The project is directed by Oscar nominee Reginald Hudlin, the film stars Chadwick Boseman as the legendary attorney and Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall. Josh Gad takes on the role as lawyer Sam Friedman. Kate Hudson, Dan Stevens, James Cromwell, Sterling K. Brown and Keesha Sharp complete the cast.

Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman tackles the early days of the first African-American justice in Us Supreme Court history...
He's played Jackie Robinson in 42 and James Brown in Get On Up, and now Chadwick Boseman is tackling another notable figure in history: Thurgood Marshall, the man who went on to become the first African-American Supreme Court Justice of the United States.
The movie in question is called Marshall and the first trailer for it has arrived. The film chronicles pivotal events in the early life of Marshall when he was a lawyer for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in America. Here's the official synopsis:
Long before he sat on the United States Supreme Court or claimed victory in Brown v. Board of Education, Thurgood Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) was a young rabble-rousing attorney for the NAACP. The new motion picture, Marshall, is the true story of his greatest challenge in those early days – a fight he fought alongside attorney Sam Friedman (Josh Gad), a young lawyer with no experience in criminal law: the case of black chauffeur Joseph Spell (Sterling K. Brown), accused by his white employer, Eleanor Strubing (Kate Hudson), of sexual assault and attempted murder.
Marshall is directed by Reginald Hudlin, who has helmed films like Boomerang and The Great White Hype but was also, among other things, president of entertainment at Bet for three years. Hudlin also wrote Marvel's Black Panther comic book series from 2005 to 2008, a run that included the wedding of Black Panther and Storm, and of course Boseman is now playing the Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with his solo feature coming out in February.
Marshall is out October 13 in Us cinemas, although a UK release has yet to be confirmed. Watch the trailer below:

While Chadwick Boseman will be most seen as a superhero on the big screen, he’s no stranger to playing real-life icons. After Jackie Robinson and James Brown, he’s portrayed Thurgood Marshall for a new historical drama this fall, aptly titled Marshall, and now the first trailer has arrived.
Directed by Reginald Hudlin (The Ladies Man, House Party) in his first film in 15 years, the story tells the early days of the man who would go on to sit on the Supreme Court, as he got experience with criminal law. Set for a mid-October release, this one seems primed to debut at Tiff, so check back for our take in a few months.
Also starring Josh Gad, Kate Hudson, Dan Stevens, Sterling K. Brown, and James Cromwell, check out the trailer below.

Before Chadwick Boseman becomes a Hollywood superstar with the release of Marvel’s “Black Panther” in February 2018, he’ll bring the historic rise of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall to the big screen in the awards season biopic “Marshall.” The drama is directed by Reginald Hudlin, marking his first feature in 15 years, and focuses on Marshall long before he would go on to become the first African-American to take the role of Supreme Court Justice.

“Marshall” is set in 1941 and follows the young lawyer as he defends a black chauffeur (Emmy-winner Sterling K.Brown) against sexual assault and murder charges. Marshall was partnered with Sam Friedman (Josh Gad), a young Jewish lawyer who had never tried a case before. Kate Hudson co-stars.
Distributor Open Road Films has already locked in an October 13 release date for the drama, which means it’s likely “Marshall” pops up on the fall film festival circuit. Open Road took both “Spotlight” and “Bleed For This” to Telluride in year’s past, with the former going on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

The career of Chadwick Boseman continues to go from strength to strength, as he lines up another high profile role to tackle post-Captain America: Civil War. The actor, who will debut the much anticipated character of Black Panther in that tent-pole movie, has been cast as Supreme Justice Thurgood Marshall in the film Marshall, which will be something of a biopic of the legendary legal icon, who became the first African American judge appointed to the Supreme Court in 1967.
The film is to be directed by Reginald Hudlin, who has focused mainly on producing and television directing for over a decade, and will be working from a script by Michael and Jacob Koskoff (MacBeth). Rather than attempting to encompass the entirety of what was a stellar career, the film will instead centre on a specific case – making the project essentially a period drama.

New galleries, acclaimed restaurants and hotels, and now even a Hollywood film premiere add to the Scottish capital's allure
Europe's new capital of cool – in pictures
In the light, spacious rooms of a former orphanage near Edinburgh city centre, the works of a painter once ignored by the art world have come home.
The enormous popularity of the first dedicated exhibition since 1942 to Scottish colourist Fcb Cadell is a sign of a revitalised interest in the son of a city that is enjoying its own renaissance.
Heavily reliant on banking and public sector jobs, Edinburgh had seemed badly placed to withstand the recession, but while the economy teeters, the city is busily securing its place as Europe's capital of culture and is increasingly a magnet for tourists. Last week it was announced that the much-hyped new film from Disney-Pixar will have its European premiere at the usually lacklustre Edinburgh film festival.

The revival of the George Kaufman-Edna Ferber comedy The Royal Family is sheer perfection. A charming send-up of the illustrious Barrymores, theatrical and film stars of their day, this 1927 play is a charmer from start to finish. Set in a gorgeously designed East Side townhouse, the cast, particularly Rosemary Harris as matriarch Fanny Cavendish, Jan Maxwell as her talented daughter Julie, and Reg Rogers as the dashing, over-the-top brother, are heaven-sent. Parody never looked -- or sounded -- so exquisite. Now at the Samuel Friedman, The Royal Family is a reminder of how wonderful revivals can be -- especially when they are laced with zippy one-liners, lively direction and accompanied by a smart ensemble outfitted in beautifully rendered costumes. The play is a paean to acting and out-sized egos. A highly physical three-act, this eccentric, narcissistic clan is at home in...
