If a pair of talented actors go toe to toe and no one is around to watch, did it really happen? That’s a silly question, but it’s the type of thing you ponder while watching The Quarry, a well acted yet narratively inert picture that wastes Michael Shannon and Shea Whigham. The filmmakers may have thought that they were making the next No Country for Old Men or another modern neo western, but instead, they just took two skilled actors and marooned them within an obvious plot that takes forever to go where you know it needs to go. Shannan and Whigham do their best to make you ignore that, but it’s a bridge too far. The movie is a real slow burn, full of crime and mystery, but surprisingly little intrigue. A traveling preacher named David Martin (Bruno Bichir) picks up a drifter (Whigham) on the...

It’s the kind of West Texas town you’ve seen in a thousand movies — not just tranquil but barren, stock-still, a real desolation row, like a postcard that may or may not contain living things. Michael Shannon, as a local police chief, explains that it’s the sort of small town that people once thought of as quaint: one bank, one pizza place, and so on. Except that Why is it that only five people seem to live there, and that they happen to be the only five characters in the movie? “The Quarry” is so diagrammed that it uses its undernourished dark-side-of-the-heartland atmosphere to excuse the fact that nothing of note is really taking place.

Steeple People: Teems Gets Spiritual in Rough-hewn Sophomore Film
It’s been over a decade since director Scott Teems delivered his warmly received debut, That Evening Sun (2009) an odyssey of Southern dysfunction which featured a stellar Hal Holbrook and took home major prizes at the SXSW Film Festival. Teems was set to return there with his sophomore film The Quarry before the cancellation of the 2020 festival. Perhaps this was a stroke of providence for Teems, whose long-awaited return falters precariously on familiarity and poorly conceived Mexican American composites with this adaptation of a 1995 novel by Damon Galgut.

Writer/director Scott Teems is clearly interested in stories redemption. His feature film debut That Evening Sun focused on a farmer returning home to deal with a family secret. He spent a season on TV's "Rectify" which focuses on the drama of a man putting his life back together after spending nearly 20 years on death row.
For his latest, a thriller titled The Quarry, Teems has adapted Damon Galgut's novel of the same name which tells the story of a drifter whose chance road-side encounter with a troubled preacher changes his life completely and forces the man to come to terms with his actions.
The Quarry is a very introspective film that relies heavily on the actors to provide much of the internalized drama. Thankfully, Teems has Shea Whigham and Michael Sh...

Reverend David Martín’s (Bruno Bichir) fate wasn’t set in stone while driving down a Texas highway with a bottle of wine in his hand. He still had choices. Should he stop to assist a man (Shea Whigham) found face down in the dirt? Should he offer a ride to the place that will serve as his own new beginning? Should he confront him about a dark truth his conscience won’t ignore? You might say that being a man of God did seal his fate since it instilled a duty that guaranteed he would help this fallen soul back to his feet, but you’d be wrong. God didn’t speak to him, his guilt and sins did. Helping that drifter at his own peril was a voluntary act of penance.
David did so, however, because he had already confronted those sins and was hoping to walk out...

"I've known a few preachers in my day..." Lionsgate has debuted the first official trailer for The Quarry, a Texas thriller based on the novel of the same name by Damon Galgut. A mysterious new minister takes up residence at a rundown church in a desolate town. Despite suspicions of the townsfolk - the hardened local police chief, the drug-dealing brothers caught in the chief's cross-hairs, and the mournful woman who keeps up the church - the congregation grows. But how long can the minister keep his secrets safe, and who can be forgiven when the truth comes to light? Starring Shea Whigham, Michael Shannon, Bobby Soto, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Bruno Bichir, Abel Becerra, and Rose Bianco. Hate to say it, this looks like another of these dime-a-dozen crime flicks. Might still appeal to a few people, especially with this cast. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Scott Teems' The Quarry,...

Starz is the latest entertainment company to pull out of the annual SXSW festival over coronavirus concerns, a source tells Variety, canceling its screening and activation for Cape Cod crime drama series “Hightown” and its featured session for “Power.”
There have thus far been 14 confirmed cases of the respiratory illness in Texas. The premium cabler joins a growing number of Hollywood studios and tech giants that will not be going to Austin for the event — a list that includes Amazon Studios, Apple, Facebook, Twitter, and Netflix.
Lionsgate, Starz’s parent corporation, will not be withdrawing entirely, though it plans to restrict its presence at the festival. Lionsgate Home Entertainment is keeping screenings for films “The Quarry” and “Arkansas” on the schedule, but will not send staff or talent.
SXSW runs from March 13 through March 22.

International Film Trust (Ift) has picked up international rights to SXSW 2020 selection The Quarry starring Michael Shannon and Shea Whigham and begins talks with Efm buyers this week.
Shannon plays a small town Texas police chief who becomes suspicious when a mysterious preacher (Whigham) arrives to take over the local church. As the congregation is drawn to the newcomer’s unorthodox sermons, it is not long before the two men are locked in a game of cat and mouse.

Described as shades of Steinbeck and Faulkner, That Evening Sun helmer Scott Teems will see Michael Shannon and Shea Whigham reteam on his sophomore feature, The Quarry. A book to film adaptation of Damon Galgut’s novel (not a remake of the 1998 film of the same name), Deadline reports that production began in New Orleans with vet producer Laura D. Smith and Kristin Mann (To the Stars) producing in partnership with Rockhill Studios, Metalwork Pictures and Gold Star Films. Nor’easter helmer Andrew Brotzman wrote the screenplay.

If he lived in England, he'd surely be Sir Bob Dylan.
The most influential songwriter of his time has become the first rock star voted into the elite, century-old American Academy of Arts and Letters, where artists range from Philip Roth to Jasper Johns and categories include music, literature and visual arts. According to executive director Virginia Dajani, officials couldn't decide whether he belonged for his words or for his music, so they settled on making him an honorary member, joining such previous choices as Meryl Streep, Woody Allen and a filmmaker who has made a documentary about Dylan, Martin Scorsese.
"The board of directors considered the diversity of his work and acknowledged his iconic place in the American culture," Dajani said recently. "Bob Dylan is a multi-talented artist whose work so thoroughly crosses several disciplines that it defies categorization."
Dylan's manager, Jeff Rosen, had no immediate comment on Dylan's reaction – Dylan did accept membership,...

Have You Heard from Johannesburg, a film by Connie Field. When this summer’s World Cup kicks off in Johannesburg in June, the world’s eyes will be fixed on South Africa once again—but this will be the “new” South Africa, the so-called Rainbow Nation that’s emerged in the two decades since Nelson Mandela walked out of prison in 1990. But just how far under the surface is the old South Africa when, as the novelist Damon Galgut has written, “The past has only just happened. It’s not past yet”? Well, if context is what you’re looking for, a new seven-part, eight-and-a-half-hour documentary, Have You Heard from Johannesburg, opening this Wednesday at New York’s Film Forum, gives you just that—and some. Filmmaker Connie Field (Freedom on My Mind, Forever Activists, The Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter) has produced a staggering, panoramic film-history of...
