When it came to playing Mario Puzo in The Offer, Patrick Gallo knew he could relate to the character. Yes, The Godfather author and Gallo are both proud Italians, but it was more than that. "In the beginning of the process, as I started to explore him, I found so many wonderful similarities between the two of us," Gallo explained in an exclusive interview with E! News. "Our perspectives on our struggle, our insecurities." Gallo said there was this "effortless" understanding of the author, who found success later in life. Gallo looked back on his own career, remembering the passion projects that he reacted to with pride, "but the world doesn't respond that way...

“It’s one of the icons of contemporary American cinema and I felt a tremendous responsibility,” declares Oscar-nominated production designer Laurence Bennett (“The Artist) about the challenges of designing “The Offer.” “The first time they called about seeing if I was interested in designing the project, I told my agent no, I was not interested because it just felt like there was great risk involved with messing with the classics,” he admits, adding for our recent Q&a, “I just found so much humanity in all the individual stories and everyone had so much investment in the project; it was incredible.” We talked with Bennett as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2022 Emmy Awards contenders. Exclusive: The Corleone family finally has come together for a real Italian dinner. In this clip from the May 12 episode of The Offer on Paramount+, Francis Ford Coppola (Dan Fogler) greets the cast of The Godfather for their first gathering before shooting commences on the film.
Much to Coppola’s delight, the actors immediately settle into their roles. Marlon Brando (Justin Chambers) sits at the head of the table and insists that his wife be served first. He then gives a speech thanking the group for attending his birthday meal.
The Offer is based on producer Albert S. Ruddy’s experience making the 1972 film that Coppola directed and adapted with Mario Puzo from Puzo’s bestselling novel. Besides Chambers and Fogler, The Offer stars Miles Teller as Al Ruddy, Matthew Goode as Robert Evans, Juno Temple as Bettye McCartt, Giovanni Ribisi as Joe Colombo, Burn Gorman as Charles Bluhdorn, Colin Hanks...

Photo: ‘The Offer’ Here’s ‘The Offer’ Paramount’s new series ‘The Offer’ follows Albert S. Ruddy (Miles Teller) as he tries to produce ‘The Godfather.’ New to the producing game, Ruddy scrambles to string together a creative team with a limited budget and not enough time. Despite Mario Puzo’s (Patrick Gallo) book topping sales charts, the execs above Ruddy are wary about making a mobster movie, considering the genre dead. To make matters worse, Joe Colombo (Giovanni Ribisi) of the Colombo crime family takes to protesting The Godfather at Italian-American Civil Rights League rallies. Taking the story to be insensitive and slanderous to Italian-Americans, the league aims to shut the movie down before it gets off the ground. A few bad actors even take to sending Ruddy and his executive producer Robert Evans (Matthew Goode) a message, if you know what I mean. Hollywood history is filled with stories of movies surpassing the books that inspired them, but perhaps none loom larger than “The Godfather.” Francis Ford Coppola’s film is so beloved that it is easy to forget that Mario Puzo’s novel was not nearly as well received. But a new miniseries about the making of the film, “The Offer,” has brought new attention to the differences between the book and the film.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Patrick Gallo, who plays Mario Puzo on the Paramount+ show, opened up about the way his different relationships with the book and the film influenced his performance.
“I didn’t read the book until many years after seeing the film, which I think is probably true for a lot of people,” Gallo said. “But I always loved the film. I probably watch it twice a year. The book is good, I...

Frank Sinatra did not get a kick out of The Godfather. This was made abundantly clear in the first episode of Paramount+'s The Offer, which debuted April 28 and takes a dramatized look at the making of the iconic film. We're, of course, referring to the scene where Godfather author Mario Puzo (Patrick Gallo) introduced himself to Ol' Blue Eyes (Frank John Hughes) at celebrity hotspot Chasen's, only to be met with hostility over the similarities between himself and Puzo's mob-adjacent character Johnny Fontane. In a surprising turn of events, Puzo did not back down, as he attempted to stab the Hollywood icon with a fork. What's even wilder? This scene is based on a...

Regarded as one of the best films of all time, “The Godfather” was released in 1972. The film was adapted from Mario Puzo’s best-selling 1969 novel and is set in the 1940s, following the Mafia family the Corelones in New York.
Marlon Brando played The Godfather himself, Don Vito Corleone, who passes down his gangster ties to his sons Sonny (James Caan) and Michael (Al Pacino). Michael has distanced himself from the involvement of his family in crime, but he comes back into the fold after violence claims his Sicilian wife, and he returns home to marry Kay (Diane Keaton) a non-Italian.
The film won the Oscars for Best Picture, Actor (Brando) and Adapted Screenplay and gave birth to one of the best sequels ever made. And now, the story behind the story is being told.

Early in Paramount Plus’ new limited series “The Offer,” movie mogul Robert Evans is delivering a soliloquy about the moment he discovered his destiny. “It was magic,” he declares. “Real magic. I knew right then and there this was my calling. That darkened movie theater became my church.”
As played by Matthew Goode, Evans is a real fake — a glottal-voiced fellow who convinces himself, first, of the pabulum he pitches others. And his declaration of movie madness, the first but hardly the last such speech he’ll give over the run of “The Offer,” sits oddly against the show’s ambitions. This program insists that movies are important, and does so by pulping perhaps the most celebrated film of the second half of the twentieth century and using it as fuel for a diverting but hardly cinematic streaming series.
Streaming-age Paramount Plus is looking back to New Hollywood Paramount Original Formula.

Paramount+ is going to the mattresses on April 28. The streamer will debut the first three episodes of The Offer. Based on the experiences of producer Albert S. Ruddy, played by Miles Teller, the original miniseries is about the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 gangster classic, The Godfather. But it is really a love story to early 1970s filmmaking. Paramount+ will also add remastered versions of the full Godfather trilogy to its streaming library. Promoted as an epic tale of betrayal, power, and murder, the first film is an allegory to the American dream, corporate malfeasance, and family. The film trilogy, as a whole, can be seen as a metaphor for the motion picture industry at the end of the 20th Century.

Why is The Offer recommended viewing?
Matthew Goode.
He's so good as longtime producer and Paramount Studios head Robert Evans that you cannot take your eyes off of him, and anything that doesn't work about The Offer is swept under the rug.
Goode's performance is brilliant as he transforms from the actor we've known from The Crown, A Discovery of Witches, Downton Abbey, and The Good Wife into Evans so entirely that it seems as if The Offer was always intended to be his vehicle.
Miles Teller might disagree, as he portrays The Godfather's sole producer, Al Ruddy, and the man from whose book The Offer is adapted.
And to be fair, Teller does a decent job with the material. He makes quite the show of Ruddy's unlikely tale about the mob being as entrenched in The Godfather's production as Mario Puzo (Patrick Gallo) and Francis Ford Coppola (Dan Fogler...

What makes the art of storytelling so crucial to society? What turns movies and TV shows into experiences? Experiences worth devoting hours upon hours, days upon days, years upon years of our precious lives to appreciating? Robert Evans in “The Offer,” played with vigorous charisma by Matthew Goode, has the answer. Speaking to a board of investors, the Paramount Pictures vice president pleads for a stay of execution, despite his company’s struggles, by emphasizing the difference between what he does and what these “titans of industry” do for work.
“You have to feed their souls,” he says, walking around the boardroom in his big, black, block glasses and tan, crisp, California suit. “How do you do that? Well, that’s hard. Right now, the soul of America is broken. […] People don’t trust politics or big business, so what can Americans look up to? Well, I’ll tell you: Paramount.

Set in the early 1970s, “The Offer” stars Miles Teller as Albert S. The Godfather faced many hurdles in its journey from page to screen. That’s the big takeaway from the full-length trailer for The Offer, Paramount+’s forthcoming limited series centered on Albert S. Ruddy’s extraordinary, never-before-seen experiences making the iconic crime saga.
The above trailer, released on Wednesday, offers a glimpse of that tumultuous journey, which included Ruddy (played by Miles Teller) fiercely advocating for the project against studio execs who were hesitant to greenlight “some gangster movie.”

Paramount+ is trying to make an “Offer” no one can refuse.
The 10-episode limited series, “The Offer,” about the true story behind making the “The Godfather,” arrives just in time for the half-century anniversary of Francis Ford Coppola’s Academy Award-winning epic. The show debuts April 28.
Dan Fogler plays then-studio-newcomer director Coppola (hot off indie “The Rain People”), who is tasked with bringing Mario Puzo’s novel to life for Paramount Pictures. The studio wanted “someone who understands Italians” to direct the feature, and while Coppola’s Italian roots made him a prime choice to helm the feature, it was clear that traditional gangster movies were “dead” by the early 1970s. A big-budget gamble was a high risk for Paramount at the time.
But it was up to Coppola and his Italian-American vision to save the picture. From including scenes that focus on family and heritage instead of mafia members,...

The Offer raises the stakes in a newly unveiled trailer for Paramount+‘s upcoming drama starring Miles Teller. The show follows producer Albert S. Ruddy’s (Teller) never-before-seen experiences of making The Godfather, one of Hollywood’s greatest films which just celebrated its 50th anniversary this month. Along with a trailer for the original limited series set to premiere Thursday, April 28, Paramount+ also unveiled new key art (above) featuring the cast which includes, along with Teller, Matthew Goode, Juno Temple, Giovanni Ribisi, Dan Fogler, Burn Gorman, Colin Hanks, and Patrick Gallo. In the trailer below, Paramount Studios is struggling to keep its footing on the Hollywood landscape. Executive Robert Evans (Goode) is determined to turn the movie studio’s luck around, charging Ruddy with getting one of the town’s most talked-about scripts made. But making The Godfather is easier said than done. Ruddy assembles a team of individuals to...

It’s the 1970s in Los Angeles and some shady studio guys are trying to get a movie made. But some dangerous criminals are rather put off by the concept and would like it not to happen. Will they manage to work things out? That’s question posed by the trailer for the upcoming Paramount+ miniseries “The Offer,” which you can watch now.
Of course, by now you know the movie in question was “The Godfather” and that this show is based on things that actually happened, so of course they managed to work it out. The how of that is the focus of the 10-episode event, however. Expect to see a lot of 1970s Los Angeles sleaze, 1970s New York grime, and plenty of that Hollywood magic, baby. Also, since Robert Evans is a character, probably lots of cocaine.

A fight between Frank Sinatra and Mario Puzo inspired the upcoming Paramount+ miniseries The Offer, about the making of The Godfather film based on Puzo’s best selling novel. The 10-episode project premieres on April 28.
“The only story I knew about the making of The Godfather was that Mario Puzo got into a fight with Frank Sinatra at Chasen’s. So I had 5 minutes of the show written and now I just needed 9 hours and 55 minutes more to fill it in,” Executive producer Michael Tolkin told members of the media during the streamer’s TCA presentation on Tuesday.
And the altercation plays out in the show’s premiere episode.
Puzo (Patrick Gallo), a longtime fan of Sinatra (Frank John Hughes), walks up to Ol’ Blue Eyes at the popular celebrity haunt in Beverly Hills where he shares his admiration and appreciation for the singer.
