One of Ireland's leading poets, Patrick Galvin is the author of seven volumes of verse. His plays, including The Last Burning, have regularly been staged in Ireland and abroad. His autobiography, The Raggy Boy Trilogy, was published in 2003.

Galvin's 1975 play, We Do It For Love, staged at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast, featured two then unknown young actors - Liam Neeson and Gerard Murphy.
He is a member of the Irish cultural institute Aosdana and awards for his writing include the Irish-American Cultural Institute Award for Poetry.
He was a well known folk singer in London in the 1950s and recorded several albums of Irish songs for Topic Records and the Workers Music Association.
He suffered a major stroke in 2004 but continued to write poetry.
