In Hamilton McFadden's 1934 film "Stand Up and Cheer!," the unnamed off-screen president (actually Franklin D. Roosevelt) posits that the real reason for Great Depression was a sudden crisis of optimism. Additionally, wicked bankers were running amok and getting rich while the rest of the nation starved, leaving everyone nihilistic and horrified. The wasteful and corrupt Warren Harding administration followed by the Crash of '29 isn't mentioned, as McFadden's film sought to cheer people up, not make their depression — and the Depression — any worse. In "Stand Up and Cheer!," Fdr created a Department of Amusement and appoints a secretary (Warner Baxter) to oversee a feel-good, nationwide show to keep morale up.
The bulk of the 80-minute film is a series of auditions in the secretary's office wherein performers come in to sing and dance, effectively turning the movie into a revue. Modern audiences may bristle at some racist caricatures, notably actress...

The latest episode of “The Morning Show” packed a topical conversation about systemic racism in media into one of its classic showdowns. In the aftermath of a companywide data leak, the Apple TV+ drama saw Uba Board President Cybil Richards (Holland Taylor) and “Morning Show” anchor Christina Hunter (Nicole Beharie) go on air together to discuss disparaging comments the media executive made during the former Olympian’s hiring process in a now-public email.
Executive producer Mimi Leder — who directed the first two episodes, the sixth and the finale of the most recent season — said Season 3 examines the layers of racism, ageism and politics impacting the legacy media business through Uba’s struggles. These pressure points reach a peak when the value of diversity in the Uba newsroom and network come into question following the cyber attack into the system in Episode 3.
“We introduced a new character, Chris Hunter. She’s an Olympic gold medalist.

Trina McGee is revealing some more hard truths from behind the scenes of the beloved sitcom, “Boy Meets World”. The series alum appeared on a recent episode of “Pod Meets World”, a “BMW” rewatch podcast hosted by stars Danielle Fishel, Will Friedle and Rider Strong, where she revealed why she didn’t appear in the show’s series finale.
McGee played Strong’s onscreen girlfriend, Angela Moore, for three seasons and was the only Black actress on the celebrated ’90s show. Over the last few years, she’s opened up about the negative experiences that came with the fan-favourite role, including being called “Aunt Jemima” by Friedle, and feeling unwelcome by other actors on the show — including Fishel, when McGee guest starred on the revival series, “Girl Meets World”, in 2015.

Resisting a deep racial analysis in the vein of I Am Not Your Negro, master satirist Jordan Peele’s horror comedy Get Out requires an audience ready to hoot, holler, yell, and laugh along. In large part, his directorial debut is a success, a rare studio comedy/thriller with a surface-level social agenda. The true test of a film like this is rather simple: are we with it or do we resist? The answer is largely the former and Get Out has a great of fun satirizing our “post-racial” society in a horror comedy of manners, though it never actually tackles the depressing realities of the issue.

It took some time (about a month), but the team is back together.
All that was required was a Lifeboat trip back to 1893, during a seminal event in American history on Timeless Season 1 Episode 11.
A frustrated Flynn abducted Lucy back on Timeless Season 1 Episode 10, after she thwarted his attempt to kill young John Rittenhouse, in order to stop the organization literally in its infancy.
Apparently, Flynn had forgotten about the only rule set in stone on this series: No going back where you've already been.
He stupidly goes back for another stab at killing the young Rittenhouse, but (surprise) history has changed and he can't get anywhere near him.
So the only thing that's protected Lucy and her team so far is that Flynn is convinced that they're meant to work together someday. But now he's started to doubt what's written in her journal.
Maybe we're not meant to be a team after all,...

Pepsi and Quaker Oats have just escaped a potentially sticky legal situation. The two companies have been granted a dismissal in a lawsuit brought against them by two men claiming to be the great-grandsons of Anna Short Harrington, who portrayed syrup and pancake figurehead Aunt Jemima. Dannez W. Hunter and Larnell Evans, Jr. filed suit against PepsiCo, the Quaker Oats Company and others in August, claiming that the defendants had failed to pay royalties to Harrington’s estate and stole Harrington’s pancake formula in an act of “industrial espionage.” Also Read: Aunt Jemima Heirs File $2 Billion Lawsuit Against Pepsi and Quaker Oats The.

I thought the best part of interviewing Andy Daly in Austin over the weekend would be getting a chance to witness the star of Comedy Central's "Review" channeling his fictional alter ego Forrest MacNeil and eating pancakes, as he did in the year's funniest half-hour of television. But though pancakes were, in fact, consumed (in the interests of accuracy, I should say that Daly ordered the short stack — albeit what turned out to be a Texas-sized short stack — and ate much, but not all, of it), the most exciting part of the interview was the news that Comedy Central was days away from announcing that "Review" (which had ended on a brilliant, but seemingly final, note) would return for a second season. (In that same announcement, Comedy Central also renewed "Inside Amy Schumer" and the animated series "TripTank," as well as greenlighting two new series: "Another Period," starring Riki Lindhome...

Embattled TV chef Paula Deen has denied new racist allegations from an employee who has worked for her as a cook for more than 20 years.
The African-American cook, Dora Charles, alleges in a New York Times article that she was promised generous pay increases if Deen's own businesses took off. But she claims that despite Deen's widespread success, she remained working for $10 per hour for many years and now lives in a run-down trailer.
Charles also alleged that Deen had used racial slurs and asked her to do things she considered demeaning, like ringing a dinner bell in front of the restaurant and urging customers to come in. "I said, 'I'm not ringing no bell,'" she told the Times.

As if things hadn't gotten bad enough for Paula Deen and her crumbling empire, the Food Network personality's longtime cook, Dora Charles, has now opened up with more allegations of racism.
Charles, who has been with Deen for 22 years and helped open Lady & Sons (the Savannah, Ga. restaurant that made Deen's career), tells the NY Times that, despite the reverential way Deen as referred to her over the years, things haven't been as they've seemed. "It's just time that everybody knows that Paula Deen don't treat me the way they think she treat me," Charles says.
The cook details years spent making less than $10 an hour, even after Deen became a television star, the use of racial slurs, and a time when Deen wanted the woman she referred to as her "soul sister" to ring a dinner bell in front of the restaurant, hollering "Come and get it!"

Nicki, it’s really not acceptable that you showed up fifteen minutes late to ‘American Idol’ on March 13, looking like a hot mess, because you claimed you were stuck in traffic.
On the March 13 live show of American Idol, the top ten came ready to perform. However, Nicki Minaj, you weren’t ready to work. It’s time to really step it up as a judge.
Nicki, you tweeted that you were running late to last night’s show due to being stuck in traffic. For the viewers, the other judges, and the performers to take you seriously, you need to show up on time, if not early.
While you were apparently stuck in traffic, you could have at least changed into something other than a black hoodie and huge sunglasses. It looked unprofessional and was disrespectful to the performers that you would keep your hood up the entire time.

It's been a year of changes for American Idol, with new judges and tweaks to the format. Tonight, the Top 10 finalists have traveled back to Hollywood to begin fighting their way to first place.

Don’t get on Nicki Minaj’s case for showing up late to American Idol‘s Top 10 performance night. Chicago – If one actress can represent an era of classic and cult movies, P.J. Soles is a pretty good candidate. Her string of roles in high profile and familiar films from the mid 1970s to early ‘80s including “Carrie,” “Halloween,” “Breaking Away.” “Rock ‘n’ Roll High School” “Private Benjamin” and “Stripes.”
From rocking with The Ramones to getting the “Aunt Jemima Treatment” from a young Bill Murray, Soles stood out as a fun leading actress and best friend during a more innocent age of “Star Wars” Hollywood. Some of the skits are hilarious, like the two Safari Planet sketches, in which Tracy Morgan argues with a parrot over who the real Brian Fellow is and Matt Damon tries to convince him that a pot bellied pig would make a good pet while Tracy fantasizes about a dirty talking porcupine. Black James Bond is another humorous segment, especially when Tracy suggests that Star Jones could be a Bond girl. But then there is the likes of Woodrow, in which a homeless man hangs out...

Normally I don’t like to jump ahead in recaps too much. But this week’s episode ended with a scene that was just so … so … um … er … My Eyes! My Eyes! Make it stop! Oh for the love of … I want my mommy, make it stop!
Nope, I just can’t process it yet. We’ll have to wait until my eyeballs come back from being disinfected first. Then, maybe, just maybe, I’ll be able to find the words to tell you about this seriously #$%@ed up sex scene.
So let’s get back to where we left off last week … Sookie. Eric. Wolf. Gun shot.
Suddenly, things get all Matrix-y. We see the bullet slow-mowing through the room. Just as it’s about to strike down some wolfmeat, Eric – with impressive ballet-like precision – leaps across the room and takes the bullet in the chest himself.
The wolf morphs into human form – hey,...

Fame is what brought ‘Bachelor‘ contestants Jake Pavelka and Vienna Girardi together, and fame is what tore them apart–or could it have been Jake’s devotion to his two left feet or Vienna’s supposed ’stalkerazzi’ tendencies? Who knows? Rumors and allegations are flying like hotcakes, and we don’t which ones to pour the Aunt Jemima on! While [...]...

Just when you thought you had put Bush and Cheney behind you, voodoo necromancer Doug Liman zombifies one of their biggest scandals in “Fair Game”, a story about outed U.S. spy Valerie Plame. Yahoo is reporting that Doug Liman–the dude behind the kick-ass “Swingers”, “Go”, and “The Bourne Identity” who later sucked the big one with “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and “Jumper”–had his latest picked up by Summit Entertainment. Starring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts, the film is based on the memoir written by undercover CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson and her husband Joseph Wilson’s book, “Politics of Truth.” Jez Butterworth and John Butterworth wrote the screenplay. Screenplay by Butterworth, story by Aunt Jemima. What do you think? Will the Valerie Plame snafu make for a riveting political thriller? Or will this be Bombgate?...

Last night on United States of Tara, everyone was pretty much waving their freak flags high.
"Doin' Time" did a great job of allowing each of the main characters to be fully aware of where they are in life and what their actions have done to create the situations they are currently in.
Let's take a closer look at each of them:
Charmaine: She seems to finally get the guy of her dreams - he is gorgeous, smart, has a great job, and is totally in love with her - But she lusts after another man (who happens to be the father of her unborn child). During the final moments of last night show, she fully admits to Tara what a messed up situation she is in. She states that:
Charmaine: I want my wedding pictures with Nick, but I want my wedding night with Neal. | permalink
Marshall: He finally...

Des Moines - During the 20th Century when a young boy or girl wanted to know how to be an adult, they’d learn from the movies. This education was not from merely emulating the stars in Hollywood films. There were thousands of movies made for the classrooms that covered nearly every subject a young mind needed to absorb. And thousands of those 16mm films found their way into Skip Elsheimer’s A/V Geeks educational film center.
Skip tours the country giving presentations of the films in various theaters, museums, art galleries and occasionally a classroom. He’s sharing another batch of gems in two new DVD sets from Kino. How to Be a Woman and How to Be a Man are instructional, inspirational and horrific. Strange to see what professionals thought was great advice. Here’s a little sampler from How to Be a Woman:
