DC Studios is wasting no time in setting a release date for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow now that the movie has found its director.
The high-profile movie will fly into cinemas on June 26, 2026, DC and Warner Bros. announced Tuesday. It is the second film to receive a release date since James Gunn and Peter Safran were brought in to overhaul DC under the new banner DC Studios. The first was Superman, which Gunn is currently shooting for a July 2025 release date.
Flimmaker Craig Gillespie was tapped by Gunn and Safran to shepherd Supergirl, which stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon). She’ll play Superman’s Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman. The feature film, from a script by Ana Nogueira, is inspired by the Tom King and Bilquis Evely comic, and will depart from the earnest take on the character seen on the CW Supergirl series.

After taking the temperature on how labor talks were going with Teamsters’ Lindsay Dougherty, Deadline Strike Talk podcast co-hosts Billy Ray and Todd Garner get into things this week with Mike Miller, the VP and Director of Motion Pictures for IATSE.
Miller sounds some encouraging notes here. Acknowledging that his members and everyone else has been beaten up by the six-month shutdown of last year coming on the heels of the pandemic, he has found those on the other side of the table to be putting across a better vibe than in past negotiations. He believes his membership is concerned with job security and stability, as well as economic and physical health. But he makes it clear that that is no sign of weakness. IATSE members have no shortage of resolve toward getting a fair deal.
As was anticipated, all 13 West Coast Studio Locals have now reached tentative agreements with the AMPTP.

Writer/director Lindsey Anderson Beer’s Pet Sematary prequel Pet Sematary: Bloodlines didn’t go over well with a lot of genre fans – including myself – but it was a big success for the Paramount+ streaming service. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, “The movie debuted as the No. 1 title on Paramount+ and quickly broke the streamer’s record for the most-watched Paramount+ original movie within the first 30 days of a film’s release in the U.S.” So it’s no surprise that Paramount has renewed their first-look deal with Anderson Beer and her production banner Lab Brew, allowing the filmmaker to continue developing a slate of projects for the studio. This slate includes the new version of Sleepy Hollow that Beer was said to be working on back in 2022.

Paramount is heading to Sleepy Hollow with a brand new feature film take on the classic Headless Horseman tale, with Lindsey Anderson Beer (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines) announced to direct the movie back in 2022. But is that project still happening, now two years later?
The Hollywood Reporter lets us know this afternoon that Paramount Pictures has renewed its first-look deal with Lindsey Anderson Beer, and one of the projects on the upcoming slate is the aforementioned Sleepy Hollow movie that was originally announced two years ago.
THR details, “Additional projects on the development slate include… Sleepy Hollow with Anderson Beer attached to write, direct, and produce alongside Todd Garner of Broken Road.”
You can learn more about the slate over on The Hollywood Reporter. It also includes a supernatural thriller titled Here Comes the Dark from the writers of Don’t Worry Darling.

Our planet can be absolutely terrifying. From unpredictable earthquakes to monstrous storms, there’s really no shortage of ways in which our cosmic home can kill us. And yet, our species perseveres, with humanity going so far as to entertain itself by telling stories about how we can overcome – or at the very least survive – the fury of nature. In fact, these stories have become so prevalent in popular culture that disaster movies are known to be one of the most profitable genres in all of cinema, and while some audiences remain critical so-called “disaster-porn,” I’d argue that the best of these films are really about the endurance of the human spirit.
And if you’re planning on telling a story about people coming to terms with how fragile they are when confronted with nature, why not place the camera in the hands of your own main characters? I mean,...

They’re baaack. We retired Strike Talk, the Deadline podcast by Billy Ray and Todd Garner Deadline hatched to lend perspective and serve as a beacon of hope to the industry during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. We’ve put the band back together because a potential standoff between the signatories and the negotiators for the Teamster and IATSE guilds looms just up the road when their contracts expire July 31. Are the signatories going to repeat last year’s failed strategy of keeping the CEOs out of the room until too late to stop another disastrous Hollywood shut down? Ray and Garner pose that question to Lindsay Dougherty, who’s leading the negotiation for the Teamsters, and who here reveals she has not had even a passing chat with any of the CEOs that finally solved the last round of labor strife. Dougherty figured into the last strike when...

Karl Urban marked the end of filming on Simon McQuoid‘s upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 on his Instagram, calling it “the most action packed fun I’ve ever had” on a film. Urban, who plays Johnny Cage in the follow-up to the 2021 film, also took the opportunity to show himself sans beard, which he’ll no doubt be growing back for The Boys, which will be returning for Season 4 later this year.
We’ve not seen a picture yet of Urban as everyone’s favourite action movie star, though MK2 producer Todd Garner had given us a peek of what to expect a few weeks back. Garner had taken to X last week to announce that filming had wrapped for the film, which according to Garner, won’t have a trailer out just yet.

Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is back at the helm for the sequel Mortal Kombat 2, which started filming at the end of June last year… then had to shut down production when the Screen Actors Guild strike hit a couple weeks later. That strike came to an end in November, and filming resumed on Mortal Kombat 2 very soon after. Now filming has wrapped, and we know this because Max Huang, who plays Kung Lao in these movies, shared pictures from the wrap party! You can check them out at the bottom of this article, along with some images producer Todd Garner shared to social media during the production.

After launching the Strike Talk podcast with producer Todd Garner to give WGA strikers comfort in the early days of 2023’s labor unrest, Billy Ray is signing off. When you are an Oscar-nominated screenwriter, and a director and producer to boot, you’ve got to go back to work at some point. No one expected it to go 30 weeks, but Ray threw himself into each installment, from landing guests who demystified the process, and down to its editing. It’s as if he was making a weekly series episode or a movie. It was all for his love for fellow practitioners of the writing craft, and his need to sound an alarm on how a failed negotiation over wages, AI and the shrinking of writer rooms would endanger an ecosystem that has fueled brilliant writing on series and films for decades. Netflix has picked up It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia grads John and Dave Chernin’s high school comedy Incoming, which stars The Black Phone actor Mason Thames, Bobby Cannavale, Kaitlin Olson and Scott MacArthur (The Righteous Gemstones).
The Chernin brothers’ directorial debut from Artists Road and Spyglass Media production follows four freshmen — played by Thames, Bardia Seiri, Ramon Reed and Raphael Alejandro — as they navigate the terrors of youth at their first-ever party.
The Chernins wrote and directed Incoming, which also stars Isabella Ferreira, Ali Gallo and Loren Gray. Spyglass Media came on board to co-finance the project after Artists Road boarded the indie comedy. For a Friday that is time for reflection and giving thanks, host Billy Ray and returning original host Todd Garner welcomes WGA president Meredith Stiehm and SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher. They talk with the guys about the lessons learned from the long and brutal six month strike that is finally and mercifully over. The guild leaders advise IATSE and Teamsters negotiators what to expect when their deals expire next July. They also review a negotiation that in their minds never had to turn into such a protracted process. The gains made by their guilds could have been achieved if only the signatories had sent in the CEOs earlier to the bargaining table, and stopped trying to work from a contract and negotiating moves that were hopelessly outdated in the streaming age. Coming in for particular criticism here is AMPTP negotiator Carol Lombardini. After Billy Ray recalled watching Lombardini cancel catering...

So the good news is that the half year double strike that ground Hollywood to a halt is over. The bad news is Billy Ray has just about come to the end of the road on Deadline Strike Talk, which to our mind has been superb and a light in the darkness. He will do one more episode or two to wrap up the lessons we hopefully learned from this labor discord, and then we will beg him to keep a podcast presence with Deadline. In sober and intelligent tones, and with a superb roster of guests, he has helped create an understanding of the intricacies, forces and history that went into the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The hope is he, and his initial co-pilot Todd Garner, will want to continue together or separately an inside baseball dialogue with the industry that Deadline serves. That is a conversation for another day.

A petition by the Producers Union asking the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to drop “producers” from their official name was delivered to AMPTP president Carol Lombardini on Tuesday.
As of noon, 2,353 producers, including Blumhouse founder Jason Blum, Women in Film president Cathy Schulman and “Fast and the Furious” producer Neil Moritz have signed the Change.org petition.

Taking them out of a labor fight they were never part of is just the first step in what producers hope will lead to a redrawing of rules that leave them without health care, and being the last to be paid despite them being the early catalysts for film and TV projects.

I haven’t been to Burning Man in 10 years. I went for the first time with my wife, and we ran around for a couple of days and thought, “Wow, that was crazy.” It was very stimulating. Lots of lights. This may sound very “woo-woo” and I’m not a “woo-woo” guy, but lately I’ve been hearing that it’s a great place to go to learn something about yourself. It wasn’t even supposed to be an option for me because I should have been shooting a movie in Australia right now but the strike shut me down, so I was at home and available. My buddies were planning a guy’s trip and I thought, you know what, I love these guys and I should go. Maybe I can learn something, see some beautiful art, meet some cool people and have a great time.

2021 was unquestionably the Summer of Cena, as John Cena appeared in "Fast 9," "The Suicide Squad," and the truly delightful "Vacation Friends." The latter was, in this writer's opinion, the first comedy film since "Blockers" that truly knew how to play to Cena's comedic strengths as a leading man, and pairing him alongside Lil Rel Howery ("Get Out'), Yvonne Orji ("Insecure"), and Meredith Hagner ("Search Party") was a recipe for comedy gold. The film was a huge hit on Hulu, snagging a sequel greenlight less than a month after its debut on the Disney-owned streamer. Less than two years later, the foursome is back for "Vacation Friends 2," reuniting with writer-director Clay Tarver in the process.
The sequel picks up a few months after the first film, which saw Ron (Cena) and a pregnant Kyla (Hagner) finally tying the knot, doing so with their new friends Marcus (Howery) and Emily (Orji) by their side.

Updated, 3:14 p.m: 20th Century Studios has shared the first trailer for Vacation Friends 2, the sequel to its hit 2021 buddy comedy, which saw Lil Rel Howery and Yvonne Orji become Vacation Friends with Meredith Hagner and John Cena.
In the second installment, picking up after the passage of a few months, newly married couple Marcus (Howery) and Emily (Orji) invite their uninhibited besties Ron (Cena) and Kyla (Hagner), who are also newly married and have a baby, to join them for a vacation when Marcus lands an all-expenses-paid trip to a Caribbean resort. His reason for traveling there in the first place is to meet with the owners of the resort to bid on a construction contract for a hotel they own in Chicago. But when Kyla’s incarcerated father Reese (Steve Buscemi) is released from San Quentin and shows up at the resort unannounced at the worst possible moment,...

Representatives for New Line Cinema did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Johnny Cage is an action movie star and martial artist who first appeared in the original Mortal Kombat game released in 1992. The character didn’t appear in the recent Mortal Kombat movie, but a post-credit scene teased that he would be on his way. It was announced earlier this year that Karl Urban was in talks to play Johnny Cage. I’m excited to see the actor in costume for the first time, but I have no doubt that he’s going to knock the role out of the park.

This week, our hosts look at what the seismic developments of the past week will mean. Hailing it as groundbreaking, the Directors Guild agreed tentatively to a deal, and will bring it to membership shortly. At the same time, about 48% of SAG-AFTRA members cast votes on whether to authorize an actors strike if a deal isn’t struck the month’s end, and an overwhelming 97.91% of those voting gave the guild a strike authorization. Armed with that resolve, the guild has just began negotiating with the AMPTP, while there’s still no progress on getting back to the table with the writers.

This week, Strike Talk looks at the role of independent producers. While often characterized as being pitted against writers by the companies, they are actually natural allies to the writers. The adage is it starts on the page, but often producers are the catalysts for getting projects hatched. Most only get paid when films and series commence to production. They are also the first ones to take haircuts when financiers decide budgets have to be shaved. Unlike writers, independent producers have no collective bargaining entity fighting for minimums and backends for them.
Joining in the discussion about the producer plight, and whether they should come under the same guild as writers and other creatives for more might at the bargaining table, are Mockingbird Pictures principals Julie Lynn and Bonnie Curtis.

Rudolph joins Karl Urban who will play Johnny Cage, which TheWrap previously reported. Gabrielle is set to play Jade.

McQuoid directs the sequel, featuring Karl Urban as the fast-talking Hollywood misfit fighter Johnny Cage.

“Mortal Kombat 2” will follow the example of its 2021 hit predecessor and film in Australia. But production will relocate to Gold Coast, Queensland, from Adelaide in South Australia.

The production was lured by the Queensland Government via Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy. It will also be eligible for the Australian federal government’s recently-revised offset scheme.

The industry’s shift to streaming has made for some strange bedfellows at the AMPTP, which could impact when and how a new agreement with the WGA is reached.
For decades, the writers guild negotiated contracts with the film and television studios while the TV business slowly evolved and original series eventually expanded from broadcast to cable. In the big 2007 face-off that triggered a 100-day strike, the WGA was pursuing for — and was able to secure — jurisdiction over new media. At the time, streaming was in its infancy, with Netflix starting an SVOD business earlier that year and Hulu launching one week before the start of the writers strike.
By the time the next negotiation rolled around in March of 2011, a seismic change was afoot. Just five days before the WGA and AMPTP agreed on a new contract that year, Netflix entered the original programming arena in a big way,...

Latino WGA members and their allies descended upon Universal Studios en masse Monday beginning at 5 a.m. to picket on the seventh day of the Hollywood writers strike.
The early arrival for some came as picketers wanted to be visible to trucks attempting to enter through the studio’s gates. Several picket lines in Los Angeles and New York have turned trucks away since contract talks broke off May 1 between the writers and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
The WGA West’s Latinx Writers Committee organized today’s action, which at its height grew to about 300 picketers in Universal City, marching across Lankershim Boulevard from the main gates of the studio to Telemundo and back.

Since Deadline formed more than 15 years ago, we’ve never lost sight of the human struggles felt by writers and everyone else during labor standoffs. Today, we proudly launch Strike Talk with Billy Ray and Todd Garner, a weekly podcast dedicated to dissecting the issues that caused talks to break off between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, this week prompting the writers to trade their pencils for picket signs.
A reckoning is upon us as writers try to keep their place at a moment when studios and streamers struggle to impose economic efficiencies to show fiscal responsibility to their shareholders, and writers struggle with things like streaming deals that have no chance for backend compensation in success, and series that have far fewer than the 22 episodes that had been the norm on the traditional networks.
