Warning: contains spoilers for The Essex Serpent TV adaptation and novel.
The pendulum swings of fate in most stories mean that whether they have a happy ending depends on where the storyteller chooses to stop. Quit while things are ahead, that’s happy; keep going until it swings back the other way, less so. The Apple TV+ version of Sarah Perry’s 2016 novel The Essex Serpent chooses to keep going past the deliberately ambiguous end of Perry’s story until it reaches the happy ending the novelist avoided.
It’s an understandable move; the six-episode TV adaptation foregrounds the romantic plot between Cora and Will (Claire Danes and Tom Hiddleston) and so generously gives that story a definite ending. The novel encompasses a broader spectrum, and as it chiefly revolves around themes of ambiguity and doubt, it characteristically leaves readers in a less secure place.

“The Essex Serpent” kicked off last week with a two-episode debut, following the Victorian Era-set story of Claire Danes’ Cora Seaborne, who moves to the English countryside only to find there is something in the waters there.
The townspeople are convinced a creature swims in their murky waters, despite the protestations of Will Ransome (Tom Hiddleston), the local pastor.
In TheWrap’s exclusive sneak peek from Episode 3, Frank Dillane’s character, Dr. Luke Garrett, makes a visit to Essex to see his friend Cora, where he encounters a girl who thinks she may be the reason horrific things are happening in the community. And it’s down to Dr. Garrett to try and unravel the mystery.
Discussing his character Luke, Dillane told TheWrap he worked to keep his portrayal authentic to the time when doctors weren’t highly paid, well respected individuals.

There’s something chilling about the start of The Essex Serpent. An aerial view presents a calm blueish water that sits neatly within the bends of a river. This quickly fades as mist and fog flood the screen and the river banks descend into a maze of cracks and crevices within the marshes. A young woman stands nearly up to her waist in water, holding a crucifix as she states that it was the ‘serpent’ that tempted her. A girl watches nervously from the bank as something darts through the water, seemingly to take the young woman. Very gloomy, very bleak, very British.
Set during the 1890s, Cora Seaborne (Claire Danes) is a woman from London who is liberated by the death of her abusive husband. Keen to explore her own interests in natural history and science, she decides to relocate to a small community in Essex along with her son,...

Is a giant creature trawling the waters near a British village, just waiting to attack anyone who happens to get lost in the fog? That’s the mythical — or is it? — query at the start of The Essex Serpent, Apple TV+’s period drama based on Sarah Perry’s novel of the same name.
The series stars Claire Danes (Homeland) as Cora Seaborne, a London wife and mother whose husband dies within the premiere’s first few moments. (The streaming service released two episodes Friday; this recap covers the first.) It soon becomes clear that Cora’s husband was abusive...

In “The Essex Serpent,” the residents of Aldwinter might all be whispering amongst themselves about some mysterious force lurking in the water just beyond their town’s shores. They mourn the missing and some of their own still living, both feared lost to the ravages of a beast that preys on those who have strayed, either from the path of righteousness or into the chilly waters that wash up against the east England coast.
In some ways, this adaptation of Sarah Perry’s 1890s-set novel hovers above it all. Quite literally in the case of the aerial views of the coves and inlets dotting the area around Aldwinter, but also in the way that it shows each of its main characters (both Aldwinter residents and visitors) as just as listless as the tides themselves.
There’s Cora Seaborne (Claire Danes), a recent widower looking to use her newfound mobility as...

Superstition, science and faith collide in an Essex fishing village when a centuries-old rumour resurfaces about a biblical sea serpent haunting the waters. Some believe the beast has come to punish Aldwinter’s people for their sins. Others – like Tom Hiddleston’s vicar Will Ransome – don’t believe in it at all. Widower Cora Seaborne (Claire Danes) hypothesises that it’s an evolutionary throwback to the age of the dinosaur. Will’s fey wife Stella (Clémence Poésy) secretly welcomes it as her lord and saviour. So unfurls Apple TV+’s atmospheric six-episode adaptation of Sarah Perry’s celebrated 2016 novel.

Gotham, Season 2, Episode 7, “Mommy’s Little Monster”
Written by Robert Hull
Directed by Kenneth Fink
Airs Mondays at 8pm (Et) on Fox
The season of Gotham comes to a turning point as more people are becoming well aware of Galavan’s evil plan, which may put things in his way. This is a fair time for this to happen, as Galavan has now become Mayor of Gotham City. Before having the power of the mayoral office, Galavan was already a force to be reckoned with, but now, with it, he may very well be unstoppable.
Galavan wastes no time either, initiating Marshal law for the interim until the Penguin is caught, which he does with the aid of Harvey Dent, who finally makes a return to Gotham. It makes sense that they would introduce more characters that are within Galavan’s sway, which is a good way to set up...

“Scarification" is the first episode of Gotham's second season that is, for better and worse, a must-see. First, the bad news: the show's superficially mature target audience is pandered to something fierce during the episode's most flagrantly excessive scenes of violence. Now, you could argue that there's a narrative function for the sheer excess of Butch's lopped-off hand, or Sid Bunderslaw's missing eye. But Unit Alpha member Luke Garrett's fiery demise establishes the same theme (Gotham's tentative status quo has been blown apart by Theo Galavan's plans to take over and then gut the city) while also feeling totally monotonous and gratuitous. If you felt nothing for Garrett save for a giddy "Holy shit" moment, that's because Gotham's trying to, in the words of show writer John Stephens, "feel dangerous" by making every scene of violence unpredictable and over-the-top. But when every scene of violence is this over-the-top,...
