Our friends over at Terror Vision announced four brand new upcoming releases this week, including Screambox movies Welcome to Hell and Cube, as well as 1988 film Captives.
The fourth movie announced by Terror Vision this week? The 1981 Indonesian horror movie Srigala, a slasher that was heavily inspired by the original Friday the 13th!
As Paul Le wrote here on Bd earlier this year, “The 1981 Indonesian movie Srigala is by no means known by the masses, but those in the loop about vintage and obscure Southeast Asian horror are aware of its existence for one reason. The director of the original Satan’s Slaves, once a steady provider of Indonesia’s homegrown horrors, joined the legion of eager filmmakers who set out to make their own slasher after watching the first Friday the 13th.”

The 1981 Indonesian movie Srigala is by no means known by the masses, but those in the loop about vintage and obscure Southeast Asian horror are aware of its existence for one reason. The director of the original Satan’s Slaves, once a steady provider of Indonesia’s homegrown horrors, joined the legion of eager filmmakers who set out to make their own slasher after watching the first Friday the 13th. However, Sisworo Gautama Putra did more than just borrow a concept — he lifted an entire ending.
Before Srigala (or “Wolf” in English) gets on with some of the most blatant copycatting in horror, Putra delivers a different movie for the first fifty minutes. The opening kill shows an unsuspecting scuba diver being gutted by an unseen assailant once he comes up to examine the small trinket he plucked from a large lake. Later, three fortune hunters arrive at the same doomed location,...

Indonesian genre kingpin Joko Anwar continues his run of hits with “Satan’s Slaves 2: Communion,” a juicy if slightly overstuffed sequel to his 2017 supernatural horror hit “Satan’s Slaves.” Set in a brutalist concrete apartment block that looks like hell on Earth even before ghouls and zombies start terrorizing the first film’s surviving family members, “Communion” serves up suspense, scares and gallows humor with considerable style. This handsomely mounted widescreen chiller is sure to lure plenty of eyeballs to streaming platform Shudder when unleashed in territories including North America and the U.K. on November 4.
Having enjoyed commercial and critical success for most of the nine features he’s directed since debuting with the delightful romantic comedy “Joni’s Promise” in 2005, Anwar’s stock has never been higher. “Communion” attracted 6.3 million local theatrical admissions in August, making it the third-highest-grossing Indonesian film of all time. “Satan’s Slaves...

Long heralded as among the best Indonesian genre efforts from the heyday of the country’s exploitation offerings, Sisworo Gautama Putra’s celebrated “Satan’s Slave” is among the most recognizable and popular films during this time. With a remake helmed by celebrated modern auteur Joko Anwar with a sequel to that emerging in the coming days, the power and influence of the original still holds sway and influence to this day, which signals the commercial impact found within.

Welcome back for another round of Severin Round-Up! The fine folks there keep digging through the cinematic tomb in search of treasures. Here’s three more they’ve unearthed:
Satan’s Slave (1980): At this juncture in life, I know next to nothing about Indonesian horror; the remake of this film that came out a short while ago certainly awakened a need to explore further. And while they are ostensibly similar, the original, as it turns out, can’t be beat for atmosphere and chills.
When the matriarch of the family dies, a father, his two children, and their housekeeper are left to fend for themselves. When mom comes back from the grave to visit, the son decides that some black magic is necessary to keep the monsters at bay.
Effective dead designs and a tightening grip of claustrophobia await those who delve into Satan’s Slave; director Sisworo Gautama Putra (Primitives...

Horror movies, according to Katinka Van Heeren in Contemporary Indonesian Film: Spirit of Reform and Ghost from the Past, are like a parade which displays—or sometimes questions—many social taboos in our society. Indeed, ghosts, demon, devil or other antagonists in horror movies may reflect the deepest fear hidden at the heart of our society. Horror movies are potent cultural indexes, because they represent the moral signs of the time in a society. The old and the new versions of “Pengabdi Setan” (Satan’s Slave) are the case in point.
Here are the things to consider. The first version of “Pengabdi Setan”, directed by Sisworo Gautama Putra, was released in 1980. During that time, the New Order regime (1967-1998) was playing a dominant role in formulating and...

Joko Anwar scored Indonesia’s highest-grossing horror hit ever with “Satan’s Slaves,” a remake-slash-prequel to Sisworo Gautama Putra’s beloved if campy 1980 original. Already another big success at home, his followup “Impetigore” is likewise a rebooting tribute to past celluloid horrors, given the familiar feel to its tale of a prodigal-daughter heroine returning to a native village that’s cursed by black magic.
Less dependent on jump scares than “Slaves” (though there are still a few), this handsome and atmospheric production is good, sometimes grisly fun that’s not terribly scary, particularly once hectic climactic events prove less suspenseful than the slow-burn buildup. Despite doing huge box office in Asia (where it opened after its premiere in Sundance’s midnight section), “Impetigore” probably won’t be Anwar’s breakout moment among Western genre fans, though he’ll surely have one sooner or later.

One of the most celebrated Indonesian horror efforts, the original “Satan’s Slaves” (or Pengabdi Setan) was initially released during the height of the country’s horror boom in the early 1980s by Sisworo Gautama Putra, one of the leading horror directors of the time. Now in 2017, a remake of the original becomes poised to offer the same overall impact for its director, Joko Anwar, with one of the most enjoyable efforts of the year.

It wasn’t until 2006 that cult Indonesian horror film Satan’s Slave finally received a DVD pressing after accruing its mystique without subtitles courtesy of a Japanese VHS. The 1980 release from director Sisworo Gautama Putra has been called an unofficial remake of Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm, its supernatural haunting steeped in Muslim beliefs and Indonesian folklore rather than the usual Christian trappings associated with the Devil. The pedigree it holds therefore made it unsurprising that Joko Anwar (who grew up on genre fare spanning horror to kung fu) would seek to helm a remake. It may have taken more than ten years to turn that dream into a reality, but Satan’s Slaves becoming his nation’s best-selling domestic release ever proves it was worth the wait.
The 1981-set movie begins with an older woman chanting under her breath in bed, an obvious sickness having taken control of her body three years previously.

Joko Anwar is already an established filmmaker, both in his country, and internationally. He started his career in cinema as a film critic, continued as a script writer, while his directorial debut came in 2005, with “Joni’s Promise”. His next two films “Kala” and “Forbidden Door”, received rave reviews from critics, and screened in festivals all over the world. In 2012, he shot “Ritual” and in 2015 “Copy of my Mind” His latest film, “Satan’s Slaves” is now the highest grossing Indonesian horror film of all time, the highest grossing R-rated Indonesian film of all time and currently, in the Top 5 of Indonesian films of all time.
Here are his top ten Indonesian films, in random order.
1. Kejarlah Daku Kau Kutangkap
A black comedy about love relationship between a photographer and a bank teller.
2. Titian Serambut Dibelah Tujuh

Horror elements have always played a role in Joko Anwar's thrillers. The Indonesian filmmaker seems to revel in making his audience cringe or jump from time to time, and he has always gladly incorporated supernatural elements to do so. Therefore it should not surprise anyone that he has finally made a horror film, and one steeped in the Asian genre conventions of gory monsters and those typically eerie long-haired ghosts. His Pengabdi Setan, or Satan's Slaves, is a remake of a very successful Indonesian horror classic from 1982 by Sisworo Gautama Putra. In turn, Joko Anwar's film has become wildly popular itself in Indonesia, and is currently on a victory tour through Asia. Being a fan of most of Joko's past work, I was eager...
