Tom Tykwer is coming back to the movies.
The German director of Run Lola Run and Cloud Atlas has announced his return to filmmaking with the German drama Das Licht (The Light).
The feature, which has just wrapped principal photography, is described as a portrait of a family “between collapse and new beginnings” and deals with the major issues of our time “in a world that is reeling.”
Das Licht is Tykwer’s first feature film since 2016’s A Hologram for the King, starring Tom Hanks. He has spent the past seven years on TV, co-creating and co-directing, with Henk Handloegten and Achim von Borries, four seasons of the acclaimed and award-winning German historic series Babylon Berlin.
Das Licht stars Babylon Berlin alum Lars Eidinger and actor-director Nicolette Krebitz (Wild, My Zoe) as Tim and Milena Engels, a couple whose family, including nearly grown twins Frieda (Elke Biesendorfer) and Jon...

Following a backlash within its membership ranks and the resignation of its board of directors and president earlier this year, France’s Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma has set new leadership. At a general assembly today, the Académie, which hands out the country’s César Awards, elected former Cnc and Arte chief Veronique Cayla as president and Intouchables co-director and filmmaker Eric Toledano as vice president. They will hold their positions for a two-year term.
The duo replaces Margaret Menegoz who was interim president following Alain Terzian’s departure in February. Terzian left amid rising controversy in the wake of this year’s César nominations which gave Roman Polanski’s An Officer And A Spy the lead at 12. The film ultimately won three prizes at the protested ceremony.

We're only two weeks from the birth of NBC's new take on "Rosemary's Baby" and, courtesy of NBC, HitFix has an exclusive picture of Zoe Saldana, who will be stepping into a modern version Mia Farrow's pixie cut for the Ira Levin adaptation. As you can see from the picture above -- a very nice NBC-provided image that is Not an exclusive -- the new "Rosemary's Baby" has been moved from New York City to Paris and the picture is presumably meant to make us sympathize with Patrick J. Adams' character, because we also would make some very dark pacts to get a Parisian flat with that unobstructed view of the Eiffel Tower. In addition to Adams and Saldana, "Rosemary's Baby" stars Jason Isaacs and Carole Bouquet. The teleplay comes from Scott Abbott and James Wong, with "Europa, Europa" and "Treme" veteran Agnieszka Holland. "Rosemary's Baby" will air...

Production has begun in southwest France on The Hundred-foot Journey, based on the best-selling novel by Richard C. Morais. Starring Academy Award-winner Helen Mirren, and directed by Oscar nominee Lasse Hallström, the film will be released on August 8, 2014 in the U.S.
In The Hundred-foot Journey, Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. Displaced from their native India, the Kadam family, led by Papa (Om Puri), settles in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. Filled with charm, it is both picturesque and elegant – the ideal place to settle down and open an Indian restaurant, the Maison Mumbai. That is, until the chilly chef proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin starred, classical French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren), gets wind of it.
Her icy protests against the new Indian restaurant a hundred feet from her own...

Not much to go on, but this project is already looking a bit Wow. Director Christophe Gans is adapting French fairytale La belle & la bête for the screen starring Léa Seydoux as the Belle and Vincent Cassel as the Beast. Costumes are by Pierre-Yves Gayraud (Cloud Atlas, The Bourne Identity), seemingly channelling fantasy via mid-late 18th century France, which is roughly when the original story is set, plus a tiny bit of Eiko Ishioka thrown in for good measure.
Gans directed Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001), an insane yet quite brilliant adventure/horror, based on a true story and also set in late 1700s France. Costumes for that film were by Dominique Borg, who incidentally should be signed up for the upcoming Assassins Creed movie immediately (watch Brotherhood of the Wolf to see what we mean).
Borg may not be working on Beauty and the Beast, though Gans’ adaptation seems to...

Today the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films announced its nominees for the 2013 Saturn Awards, one of the few awards programs in which a lot of us will recognize nearly every production. The awards have been expanded over recent years, so if you are unclear about just what type of productions are honored by the Academy, an explanation is included in the press release below, although it can really be summarized as “we know it when we see it.”
A few head-scratchers, however, just beg to be called out:
Anna Karenina? Les Miserables? Leverage? Elementary? Really? That is some broad definition. No subgenre categories for television. The Academy proofreader should know by now that it’s “Syfy” and not “SyFy” (don’t worry, I fixed it, and sorry, it’s a pet peeve). Adding in historical fiction somewhere somehow without actually mentioning it. The entire category “Best Youth-Oriented...

The Oscar for Best Costumes is normally pretty easy to predict, just focus on the costume drama and don't look back. This year that film is Anna Karenina with costumes by Jacqueline Durran, and, as expected, she took home the Period Film award at tonight's 2013 Costume Designers Guild Awards. Then Jany Temime's work on Skyfall won the Contemporary category, but her work wasn't nominated for an Oscar so as far as predictions go we can move along. Then we come to the Fantasy category where the two Snow White films do battle and both were nominated for an Oscar. The winner? The late Eiko Ishioka's work on Mirror Mirror. Ishioka passed away at the beginning of last year and Mirror Mirror serves as her second Oscar nomination. She won previously for her work on Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula. As for Durran, this is the third time she's been nominated for an Oscar,...

Finally the Cdg nominations have been announced, and while they right some of the wrongs made by Oscar and chiefly BAFTA, ample opportunity to reward some really creative and effective costume design has once again been overlooked.
We have indicated at length our views on the Academy and BAFTA’s nominations (Here and Here) so in the interests of not sounding like a broken record we shall stick to the facts. Well, perhaps just the odd observation… Nominations below:

Once again a batch of guild nominees come in following the Oscar nominations, which doesn't exactly make them all that interesting. At least not for me as I'm more interested in predicting the Oscar winners than who actually wins these awards. As such, featured below are the nominees for the 2013 Costume Designers Guild Awards for excellence in period, contemporary and fantasy films. To no surprise, all five Oscar nominees -- Anna Karenina, Mirror Mirror, Lincoln, Les Miserables and Snow White and the Huntsman -- are among the 15 nominees, not one coming from the contemporary category, which, again, isn't at all surprising. At this point I have Jacqueline Durran's work in Anna Karenina predicted to win the Oscar and the late Eiko Ishioka (Dracula) the runner up for her work on Mirror Mirror. The Costume Designers Guild Awards will be held on Tuesday, February 19, the last guild awards to be...

If the Critics' Choice Movie Awards 2013 really are a sign of what we have to expect at the 85th Academy Awards, then the Oscar winners are going to be split between every deserving film and performance to be nominated this year. While "Silver Linings Playbook" won the most awards with Best Comedy Movie, Best Actor and Actress in a Comedy and Best Ensemble, all other major awards were split between "Argo," "Lincoln" and "Zero Dark Thirty."
Of course, there's no good way to judge who will win Best Director as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences didn't nominate CCAs winner Ben Affleck for the award. It should help that the film also took home Best Picture, which bodes well for its Oscar chances. It's still a toss-up to see who will take home which awards on Feb. 24, but for now things are looking good for "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Argo,...

"Argo" F...yourself! Ben Affleck's "Argo" was the big winner at the 18th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards. The film won Best Picture with Affleck, infamously snubbed by the Academy, took home the Best Director award. I say...Yay!
Voted by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, of which I'm a proud member, the Critics' Choice Movie Awards have been regarded as a better Oscar predictor than the Golden Globes. Heck, we even give talented directors their well-deserved praise! Ha!
Affleck received the loudest standing ovation after winning the Best Director award for "Argo." Also receiving standing ovation was Daniel Day-Lewis for his Best Actor win for "Lincoln." Jessica Chastain won Best Actress for "Zero Dark Thirty," while Philip Seymour Hoffman took home the Best Supporting Actor trophy for "The Master" and Anne Hathaway (another hurray!) received the Best Supporting Actress Award for "Les Miserables."

A pair of likely Oscar best picture nominees, "Lincoln" and "Les Miserables," are the leading nominees for the Critics' Choice Movie Awards.
Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" racked up 13 nominations, a record number in the 18-year history of the awards. It's up for best picture, best director and four acting awards (Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones and best ensemble), along with a host of technical honors.
It will compete in most of those categories against "Les Miserables," which is up for 11 awards. "Silver Linings Playbook" (10 nominations) and "Life of Pi" (nine) also scored big.
The Critics' Choice Movie Awards will air Jan. 10 on The CW. The complete list of nominees is below.

- The Scorecard Review
There are a lot of kids’ tables at the Critics’ Choice Film Awards.
By that, I mean there is literally a children’s category among the contenders — best young actor/actress — which separates Quvenzhané Wallis of Beasts of the Southern Wild, who is also nominated in the overall lead actress category, from her adult peers.
And there are also separate “kids’ table”-type groups for not only comedies (which the Golden Globes does, too) but action and sci-fi/horror movies, which isolates those projects and actors from contention in the traditional, non-genre categories. The group also includes a “best ensemble...

Critics praise the lavish costumes and photography, but say some performances would get 'drummed out of a school play.'

Back in September, when MTV News caught up with "The Three Musketeers" director Paul W.S. Anderson, he promised audiences a swashbuckling good time when his latest movie hits theaters. Now that its release date is finally here, fans can judge it for themselves.
Based on the beloved and familiar tale of adventure, intrigue and that famous "All for one, and one for all" motto, the film features an ensemble cast: Logan Lerman, Christoph Waltz, Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom, Ray Stevenson, Matthew Macfadyen, Luke Evans, Juno Temple, James Corden and Mads Mikkelsen.
Critics seem to enjoy the film's just-for-fun factor and hi-tech visuals — especially the ornate costumes. Speaking to the performances and continuity,...

The (somewhat) recently debuted trailer for director Paul W.S. Anderson’s adaptation of The Three Musketeers affords just the briefest, intensely edited peek at those 17th century costumes in motion. It’s a lace and linen fest.
Alexandre Dumas père’s original story of The Three Musketeers takes place in France before the opulent reign of Louis Xiv. This is important because in costume terms the overall style was considerably more sober than in both Henry VIII’s Tudor reign and the French sartorial dominance of the world that was to follow. During the 17th century, fashion was ever changing and evolving, though judging by this trailer costume designer Pierre-Yves Gayraud (The Bourne Identity) is reflecting long-established trends we associate with the era.

Since 19th July, The London Film Museum has been running an exhibition of props and costumes from 20th Century Fox movies to celebrate the studio’s 75th anniversary. Clothes on Film decided to make a visit, a bit late in the day, but we had a good look round anyway.
There were not that many costumes in the Fox exhibition (certainly considering the history of the studio), but the museum itself has plenty more to see. Just to be in the same room as some of these memorable outfits is a thrill, especially from more recent movies where memories are fresh. With this is mind, here is our pick of Fox’s lot and the best the museum has to offer:

One thing about Baz Luhrmann’s Australia, regardless of the quality of the film itself, is that the World War II era costumes are dazzling . This red...
