The general premise of the erotic thriller is predicated on combining two obvious elements: sexually-charged images with the use of storyline elements to make one feel uneasy during the downtime or even during the sexual shenanigans. Countless genre titles have employed a facet of this throughout their runtime, and with few exceptions rarely turns up in the LGBTQ+ realm. Israeli director Nitzan Gilady, adopting an experience from a real hate crime committed in Tel Aviv several years ago, offers his take on the subject matter while offering a topical touch to his latest feature, “In Bed.”

IDFA Artistic Director Under Fire After Applauding “From the River to the Sea” Opening Night Protest
Orwa Nyrabia, the award-winning documentarian who has served as artistic director of the International Documentary Film Festival since 2018, is facing blistering criticism and calls for his resignation after being captured on video applauding as protesters interrupted the Amsterdam-based fest’s opening night ceremony on Wednesday while holding a banner proclaiming, “From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will Be Free,” a phrase widely understood to be a call for the elimination of the state of Israel.
Sixteen high-profile members of the Israeli film community on Thursday signed a letter addressed to IDFA and the international film industry in which they expressed “uttermost dismay, disappointment and concern” at Nyrabia’s conduct on the biggest night of arguably the largest documentary film festival in the world. “We see this as a personal attack against us,” they declared. “We call on the director of IDFA, and on its board of directors, to clearly and resoundingly distance themselves,...

Berlin-based sales agency M-Appeal has closed the first deal for its erotic gay thriller “In Bed,” selling the rights for France to Optimale Distribution, ahead of the film’s international premiere at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. M-Appeal boarded the film, Nitzan Gilady’s second feature, at script stage.
“In Bed” unfolds over the 24 hours after a shooting takes place at an LGBTQ pride parade in Tel Aviv. Best friends Guy, 28, and Joy, 31, retreat to the safety of Guy’s home, taking fellow pride parader Dan with them.
With an electric, pop aesthetic, and original soundtrack by Offer Nissim, the film is “an immersive and suspenseful journey into a night of erotic encounters, drugs and paranoia.” One of the main themes of the film is chemsex, a topic rarely represented in cinema, which Gilady explores head on.
Gilady said: “Rather than stigmatizing, I wanted to show this side of our culture in a truthful way.

The main character of Nitzan Gilady’s Wedding Doll is a common character archetype, but one that’s rarely given the opportunity to be a lead, and even more rarely placed into a potential romance. Hagit (Moran Rosenblatt) is a young woman living in Israel with a mild mental illness that makes her appear slightly askew to those around her.
Hagit smiles a little too often, slightly stumbles over her words, and just appears a little bit too friendly to those around her. It’s not hard to imagine a version of this movie that plays out like Lucky McKee’s May instead of a romantic comedy sprinkled with social commentary.
It’s not just Hagit’s manner, but her pet habits that cement her reputation as an eccentric in the community. Her room is adorned with a wall of women in wedding dresses, and she spends much of her...

We’ve all been mentally challenged at the movies. Not very rewarding. Being mentally challenged In the movies, on the other hand, can be the route to cash and prizes (see “Forrest Gump,” “Rain Man,” “I Am Sam,” “Shine”). For all the great performances we’ve seen involving characters who are developmentally disabled, though, they’re very seldom presented as sexually attractive or active – in fact, sexuality itself is typically left out the equation. Sure, there are exceptions—"Benny and Joon," "The Other Sister"—but if erotic attraction arises, it’s generally between intellectual equals. Which is one of the reasons Israeli director Nitzan Giladi’s “The Wedding Doll” caught the attention of audiences when it played at Toronto last month, en route to an Ophir award for star Moran Rosenblatt in Tel Aviv. In "The Wedding Doll," Rosenblatt plays Hagit, a worker in a family-run paper factory who is...

★★★★☆ Nitzan Giladi's fantastic debut feature Wedding Doll (2015), premièring at Toronto this year, is the second Israeli film in as many years to focus on the difficult relationship between a young woman with a mental disability and the family member living with and caring for her. Where Asaf Korman's Next To Her (2014) mined the more unsettling recesses of a co-dependent relationship, Giladi has chosen to make a film all about the quest for independence. Of course, that is difficult in modern society when learning difficulties of any kind still come laden with all manner of stigma. "Weirdo!" is the cry of a young boy as Hagit (Moran Rosenblatt) revels in the sunrise.
Giladi's script does an impressive job of excavating the spectrum of different prejudices buried beneath the surface. These do not just come in the form of overt nastiness, but subtle put-downs and mistrust even from those who...

This week sees the red carpet rolling into the centre of the Ontario capital for the fortieth edition of the Toronto Film Festival. Giving a headache to keen festival-goers everywhere the anniversary line-up boasts a staggering 289 feature titles including a whopping 132 world premières. Bookending the festival will be Jean-Marc Vallée's Demolition, which kicks things off on Thursday 10 September, and Paco Cabezas' Mr. Right, which draws proceedings to a close ten days later. The latter is a murderous rom-com starring Anna Kendrick and Sam Rockwell, the former stars Jack Gyllenhaal, grief-stricken and prone to random acts of destruction. But with such an enormous roster of films to choose from, it doesn't all hinge on the star-studded awards vehicles that may or not make their bow.

While the Toronto International Film Festival looks around the world and in all genres to find features for its annual incarnation, one area that receives focus is films aimed at children. With the understanding both that quality cinema is not dependent on its target audience, and that cinephiles can begin at any age, the festival’s Kids Programme highlights such features.
The Discovery Programme, on the other hand, brings together films from first and second time directors, with an eye on emerging talent. The festival has now announced the lineups for both Programmes in the 2015 incarnation of the event, along with further additions to the Cinematheque and Vanguard lineup. The Discovery lineup joins previously announced Canadian features. The films, with their official synopses, can be seen below.
