Veteran actor Steven Gilborn has died of cancer. He was 72.
Gilborn, most famous for playing the role of Ellen DeGeneres' father on her sitcom Ellen, passed away on 2 January at his home in Columbia County, New York.
He gave up an academic career as a Professor to pursue acting and has enjoyed over three decades of success as a TV, film and stage star.
He had worked on American TV shows including E.R., The West Wing, The Wonder Years and NYPD Blue.
Gilborn survived lung cancer five years ago, but a brain tumour was discovered last May and rapidly advanced to the point where he required hospice care in his home.
His wife of 44 years, Karen Halverson, says, "It was a beautiful, amazing experience. He wasn't in much pain, his humour was intact and his verbal wit continued."
Gilborn is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren. A memorial service is being planned for next month.
