Following Salzburg, Berlin, Amsterdam, Madrid, and Paris, Claus Guth’s critically acclaimed 2008 adaptation of Don Giovanni is presented at the Opera House. The title role of this provocative, youthful production (sold out weeks before the 2 March 2024 Budapest premiere) is performed by Gábor Bretz and Károly Szemerédy, the ensembles of the Hungarian State Opera are conducted by principal conductor Martin Rajna.

Stereotyping is a sin both in art and in life. Films, both as a piece of art and as a superstructure, (to borrow a descriptor used by film critic Roger Garcia) often commit this, however, shoehorning great talents in roles that almost never really define the breadth of their competence. The late Filipina actress Cherie Gil, who local filmgoers have generally identified more as an actress suited for the role of the antagonist, has more than proven she can do more than one kind of characterization; however, in classics such as “Manila by Night” (1980) and Oro, “Plata Mata” (1982) and arguably in the most multidinous way possible in “Sonata,” a 2013 independent movie which also won her the best actress accolade at the 2015 Asean International Film Festival and Awards.

Westworld Season 4 Episode 2
One of the biggest strengths of the first season of Westworld was its massive ensemble cast. Some of them were known performers taking on new characters, with established actors like Ed Harris as the mysterious Man in Black and Anthony Hopkins adding a little class to the story of a very adult theme park full of robots just waiting to go kill-crazy. However, the performers who weren’t as well-known stood out because they all had very distinctive looks, and few characters in Westworld stood out quite like Angela Sarafyan. With her striking, wide-set hazel eyes, Sarafyan’s Clementine Pennyfeather was undoubtedly a favorite of guests of the park, if only because of her kind heart and assigned profession. The “hooker with a heart of gold” trope brought to life.
Clementine always had a dreamy sort of innocence, if only because she...

Composed by Mozart in 1787, Don Giovanni, one of the most famous operas, which is included in the repertoires of the most famous theatres in the world, tells the story of a young, dissolute nobleman who crosses all the borders of decency. The eponymous Don Giovanni wins and breaks hearts, insulting and alienating subsequent people, to the point of supernatural culmination and a moralising conclusion. The Sound Of Identity by James Kicklighter tells the story of producing a modern version of the famous opera. A pioneering production: the role of Don Giovanni is played by the first transgender singer in the history of the medium, Lucia Lucas, and the premiere of the opera takes place in ... Tulsa.
One cannot help but feel that history repeats itself. Suffice it to recall Peter Farrelly's Green Book and the factual story of Don Shirley, a prominent African-American pianist, touring the southern racist states.

Franco Zeffirelli, the stylish and sometimes controversial theater, opera and film director, has died. He was 96.
Zeffirelli, who was Oscar-nominated for his 1968 version of “Romeo and Juliet,” died at his home in Rome at noon on Saturday, his son Luciano told the Associated Press. “He had suffered for a while, but he left in a peaceful way,” Luciano said.
While Zeffirelli was fond of making films with literary antecedents such as “Romeo and Juliet,” “Hamlet,” “Taming of the Shrew” and “Jane Eyre,” his legacy as director of extravagant opera and theater productions is probably more consistent and long-lasting.
He directed, co-wrote and co-produced the 1966 production of “Taming of the Shrew,” starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, one of the twice-married celebrated pair’s most successful co-starring assignments. Spirited and amusing, it paved the way for a youthful and sexy “Romeo and Juliet,” which was a major box office success in the U.

Fair to say, Antonio Banderas is the best thing about National Geographic’s second “Genius” series, “Picasso.” Born in Picasso’s home town in Malaga, Spain, 57 years ago, Banderas has turned down many offers to play Picasso since his 20s. But he finally stopped running away from the bigger-than-life abstract painter, and agreed to play the older Picasso from his 40s through his death at age 91 in Mougins, France in 1973, surrounded by loved ones. “He realizes… ‘this is my best painting’,” said Banderas.
The 11-part series was filmed in Hungary over five months, with Banderas arriving on set in the wee hours to endure five hours of prosthetic makeup. “It was exhausting,” said Banderas, who enjoyed creating Picasso with showrunner Ken Biller, makeup designer Davina Lamont, and costume designer Sonu Mishra. Banderas refused to see dailies, and said he only watched the first episode. It made him feel too self-conscious.

Two-time Oscar winning Czech director Milos Forman has died at the age of 86, according to Reuters and reports. Forman’s wife Martina informed Czech news agency Ctk that the filmmaker passed after a brief illness in the Us.
Part of the Czech new wave, Forman graduated from the Prague Film Faculty of the Academy of Dramatic Arts, and caught global attention with such titles as Black Peter (1964), The Loves of a Blonde (1965) and The Firemen’s Ball(1967). The latter two were Oscar nominees for best foreign film.

Everyone ended up in a better place in this likely series finale. Maybe even the killer.
The investigation of the child killer by Kreizler's team came to a successful but melancholy end on The Alienist Season 1 Episode 10.
That's an appropriate feeling for those viewers who have come to relish these characters and their lives in 1896 New York City. If this is indeed the end, at least the series went out on a high note. Much like those the soprano was hitting in Don Giovanni.
This was a big episode for confessions, as these tight-lipped Victorians let loose some of their deepest secrets.
At last, we finally found the answer to one of the show's biggest mysteries: What happened to cause Kreizler's crippled arm?

The director of Broken will suceed Nicholas Hytner from April 2015.
The National Theatre has appointed Rufus Norris to succeed Nicholas Hytner as director of the National Theatre with effect from April 2015.
John Makinson, Chairman of the National Theatre, said: “In setting out to find a new Director for the National Theatre, the Board looked for an individual with a creative reputation that would command the respect and support of British theatre, and with the generosity of spirit that has characterised Nick Hytner’s period as Director. Rufus Norris has both those qualities in abundance. He is an exciting choice, someone who will build on the National Theatre’s present reputation as one of the most admired and innovative performing arts organisations in the world. We are fortunate that he has chosen to join us.

You might expect Calixto Bieito to resemble a cross between Count Dracula and Quentin Tarantino. The Spanish director, often called "the bad boy of opera", has become notorious for extreme productions that often feature explicit sex and violence, their concepts including a cannibalistic, post-nuclear Parsifal and a present-day Don Giovanni that involved vicious scenes of rape, drug overdose and murder.

This marks the tenth year of New Jersey's Don Giovanni Records, and it's celebrating with a special tour. Screaming Females, Waxahatchee, and Tenement will all hit the road together this September. Screaming Females and Tenement both released EPs (Chalk Tape and Freak Cast In Iron, respectively) earlier this year, and Waxahatchee released a new album, Cerulean Salt, in March. It should be a diverse bill seeing as the bands are pretty distinct from one another, with Waxahatchee's mellow sounds softening Screaming Females' power-punk and Tenement's noise pop. A full list of dates is below. Screaming Females ...

Hilly Eye is the collaboration of guitarist and vocalist Amy Klein and drummer and vocalist Catherine Tung. The two have been working together since 2009, and began as an effort between Klein (formerly of Titus Andronicus) and Tung to create something noisey and primitive while maintaining elements of psychedelia. Hilly Eye’s forthcoming album Reasons to Live embodies exactly that, from the droning guitars to the aggressive vocals. It’s an effort that makes use of soft sounds as well as violent, loud ones. The album will be released on Jan. 22 via Don Giovanni, but in the meantime you can stream...

Michael Haneke's Palme d'Or-winning film Amour will strike some as brutal, as its elderly characters grapple with the indignities of ageing. The director proves a challenging subject to interview as he evades and obstructs – much like his films
Michael Haneke likes to say that his films are easier to make than to watch. Cast and crew have fun, but he expects his audience to be disturbed, affronted, even sickened. "On the set I make jokes," he said when we met in Paris to discuss Amour, which deservedly won him the Palme d'Or at Cannes this year. "I can't get too involved, or it turns into sentimental soup. I try to keep it light."
What he tried to alleviate while making Amour was a grim anatomy of elderly debility and dementia, complete with incontinence, forced feeding and the eventual stench of putrefaction. The film follows the decline of an octogenarian musician,...

Damon Albarn and Terry Gilliam launch Eno's new audience expansion scheme to attract younger audience to art form that many consider 'too stuffy, too posh, too expensive'
In 1998, Sir Colin Southgate, the former Royal Opera House chairman, infamously gave his verdict on what to wear to the opera. "I don't want to sit next to somebody in a singlet, a pair of shorts and a smelly pair of trainers".
But the English National Opera was today making an effort to be a little more relaxed at the launch of an initiative to attract younger audiences. "Come in shorts, armour, jeans, pumps, anything!" said artistic director John Berry.
The scheme, Undress for the Opera, was inspired by the success of Damon Albarn's Doctor Dee which played at the Coliseum in the summer and where 60% of the ticket buyers were new to Eno. Berry and Albarn were joined at the launch...

HBO's Terence Winter loves to dazzle viewers with plots that take both surprising and truthful turns. "Storyteller" should be Winter's middle name, and as executive producer, head writer, and creator of Boardwalk Empire, his commitment to narrative integrity fuels the show's success.
Winter has reason to feel proud because the accolades keep coming. Two weeks ago, Boardwalk won the 2012 SAG Award for Best Ensemble, a welcome follow-up to the 2011 Writers Guild Award for Best Writing in a New Series and the 2011 Golden Globe for Best Television Series Drama. Boardwalk's second season ended this past December 11 with a closing shot that electrified the fans, but Winter and his creative team had already been in their writers' room since September, devising plot lines for season three. Mark Spratt, founder of Potential Films, believes that while mainstream film continue to perform well, ‘smaller’ independent and foreign films are increasingly having a tougher time in the marketplace.
What were your strongest performing films of the 2009/2010 financial year?
Noodle and I, Don Giovanni.
What titles didn’t necessarily meet your expectations?
Sister Smile; it failed to reach even moderate levels of business.
How experimental are Potential’s plans in terms of distribution models?
No simultaneous releases. We’re trying region by region release with Second Hand Wedding.
While 2009 registered a record box office intake, do the independents feel it?
Successful films continue to perform well – there is no difference, but ‘smaller’ independent/foreign films are having a tougher time.
What is the key to the survival of independent, niche product distributors?

Director Peter Bogdanovich.
Interviewing Peter Bogdanovich for the April 2002 issue of Venice Magazine was a thrill for me. Like Francis Coppola, John Frankenheimer, and William Friedkin before him, Bogdanovich was one of those filmmakers whose one-sheets hung on my bedroom walls growing up. Plus the fact that he himself had a renowned career as a film historian and interviewer of his own childhood heroes, such as John Ford, Howard Hawks, Orson Welles, and dozens of others, made our talk a real feast.
Not long after the article was printed, I received a letter with a New York City postmark. The note enclosed said simply: “Dear Alex, thanks for doing your homework so well, and thanks for the good vibes. All the best to you of love and luck, Peter Bogdanovich.”
Our chat remains one of my favorites during my 15 year tenure as a film writer. --A.S.

Spain Film Scene: Local Alex de la Iglesia's ("The Oxford Murders", "Day of the Beast") latest film "Balada Triste de Trompeta" finished principal photography this month (see pic of director above). This co-production with France's production company La fabrique 2, tells the story of two heavily scarred clowns, Javier and Sergio, that bloodily compete for the love of Natalia, the trapezist. Set in 1973, during the last days of the dictatorship of Franco, the director himself describes the film as a "grotesque tragedy of comedic horror." The film stars T.V comedian Carlos Areces, fresh from the success of its first film "Spanish Movie" and Antonio de la Torre, the critically acclaimed actor of Daniel Sánchez Arévalo's "Gordos", also starring are Sancho Gracia, Santiago Segura and Terele Pávez, all veterans from de la Iglesia's previous films. The film is set to be released at the end of 2010. After his hit debut "1 franco,...

This week’s episode of The Amazing Race began just as many other episodes have this season: dating couple Meghan and Cheyne departing first as a reward for last week’s first place finish. Ripping open their clue envelope in the dreary morning hours, the pair discovered the locale of this week’s mobile adventure: Prague, the capital of The Czech Republic and the former Holy Roman Empire, known for Gothic architecture, an impressive cultural output and more Bohemians than a college town coffee shop
Contestants were informed to search the Old Town Square and locate “a vintage Praga.” An understandably vague clue, but perhaps a bit advanced for the remaining teams. After all, brothers Sam and Dan were certain Prague was a sovereign nation.
As most do when backed into an intellectual corner, Meghan and Cheyne consult the internet for answers. Utilizing an airport computer, the duo discovers a Praga is an old-fashioned convertible.
