Robert Pattinson is heading to space.
Warner Bros. shared a first look at Bong Joon Ho’s upcoming “Mickey 17,” set to be released on March 29, 2024. “Mickey 17” is currently in production and is directed, produced, and scripted by Bong, adapted from Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey 7.”
Pattinson stars as the titular Mickey, who is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever a mission is too dangerous — even suicidal — the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact.
“Parasite” Oscar winner Bong also enlists Academy Award nominees Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” star Naomi Ackie to round out the sci-fi thriller.

Bong Joon Ho has set a date to return to theaters. The Academy Award-winning director behind Parasite will open Mickey 17 around the globe on March 29, 2024, Warner Bros. announced Monday.
Mickey 17 stars Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo, with Bong penning the script based on the book Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton.
The book, published earlier this year, centers on a man known as an expendable on a mission to colonize a distant planet. Each colony features one crew member who takes on the most dangerous jobs on the mission — jobs that will assuredly lead to their deaths. However, their memories are backed up and they are restored to cloned bodies when they die. In the novel, Mickey 7 — the 7th version of this crewmember — is left for dead on a mission, but survives. When he returns to base, he discovers...

Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 will hit theaters around the globe on March 29, 2024, Warner Bros said Monday. The studio already had the date staked out for an event film. Also opening that weekend is Sony’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and an untitled event film from Universal.
The pic from the Parasite Oscar winner is currently shooting off a script he wrote based on the novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton. The filmmaker is also producing.
Robert Pattinson stars in the title role alongside Oscar nominee Steven Yeun (Minari), Naomi Ackie (I Wanna Dance with Somebody), with Oscar nominee Toni Collette (Hereditary) and Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo (the Avengers films).
The film is produced by Plan B Entertainment, Dooho Choi of Kate Street Picture Company, and Bong under his Offscreen, Inc. banner. The behind-the-camera creative team includes Oscar-nominated director of photography Darius Khondji, Oscar-nominated production designer Fiona Crombie, Oscar-nominated editor Jinmo Yang (Parasite), costume designer Catherine George and visual effects supervisor Dan Glass (The Matrix franchise). The music is by composer Jae-il Jung.
Parasite fired off like a rocket out of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, taking the Palme d’Or and going on to win Best Picture at the Oscars, one of its four trophies there along with Best Director, Screenplay and International Feature. The pic was a revolution for a Korean title on the festival and awards circuit.
Mickey 7 was published in February by St. Martin, a Macmillan imprint. While the film will be inspired by the novel, sources say that given Bong’s past experiences with adaptations, his version might ultimately may be different from the novel’s. The novel’s story follows Mickey7, who is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.

Denis Villeneuve’s sweeping “Dune” and Disney’s Golden Globe-winning animated musical, “Encanto” each scored six nominations Tuesday to lead the 20th annual Ves Awards nominations (awards ceremony details are in pandemic flux). Marvel’s trippy “Loki,” meanwhile, led the broadcast field with four nominations for the Disney+ series.
Competing for feature visual effects are the frontrunning “Dune,” “Godzilla vs. Kong,” “The Matrix Resurrections,” Daniel Craig’s Bond finale, “No Time to Die,” and Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” All have been shortlisted for the VFX Oscar, with “Dune” as the heavy favorite, in which Dneg supplied windblown sand, raging sandstorms, flying insect-like ornithopters, and the iconic CG sandworms.
Supporting visual effects nominees include “Candyman,” “Last Night in Soho,” “Nightmare Alley,” “The Last Duel,” and “The Tragedy of Macbeth.”

The Visual Effects Society unveiled nominations Tuesday for its 20th annual Ves Awards, with Warner Bros’ Dune and Disney’s animated Encanto leading all nominees with six apiece, followed by the Disney+ Marvel series Loki which has four noms to lead all broadcast series.
The group, celebrating its 25th anniversary, recognizes the year’s best in outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation across film, animation, television, commercials and video games. With the Omicron variant surging, the Ves Awards ceremony does not have a date or format yet; those decisions are still to be made and tickets are not yet up for sale.
Last year, the Ves Awards went virtual in a ceremony hosted as per usual by Patton Oswalt. Netflix’s The Midnight Sky, Disney/Pixar’s eventual Animated Feature Oscar winner Soul and Disney+’s The Mandalorian were among the marquee winners.

The biggest VFX decision on “The Matrix Resurrections,” of course, was how to update the mind-blowing Bullet Time effect for the return of Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss). After all, a lot has changed since Bullet Time earned the Oscar in 2000, creating the illusion of bending time and space so Neo could perform his balletic martial arts. But thanks to new advancements in physics-based lighting and volumetric capture, it’s now a lot easier to produce amazing photorealism. Yet director Lana Wachowski didn’t want the VFX to overwhelm her richer and warmer aesthetic, in keeping with the surprisingly emotional love story between Neo and Trinity. That applied to cracking the new code for Bullet Time by Dneg.
“One of the things that was important was the aesthetic,” said Dan Glass, Dneg’s senior VFX supervisor (who previously worked on “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions”). “It’s clearly an upgrade.

Are you ready to enter the Matrix again? From visionary filmmaker Lana Wachowski comes “The Matrix Resurrections,” the long-awaited fourth film in the groundbreaking franchise that redefined a genre. Set to release on December 22nd worldwide, the new film reunites original stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss in the iconic roles they made famous, Neo and Trinity.
In “The Matrix Resurrections,” return to a world of two realities: one, everyday life; the other, what lies behind it. To find out if his reality is a physical or mental construct, to truly know himself, Mr. Anderson will have to choose to follow the white rabbit once more. And if Thomas…Neo…has learned anything, it’s that choice, while an illusion, is still the only way out of—or into—the Matrix. Of course, Neo already knows what he has to do. But what he doesn’t yet know is the Matrix is stronger,...

A new trailer for “The Matrix Resurrections” has landed, bringing with it more eye-popping action sequences and more questions about Lana Wachowski’s big return to the iconic action franchise. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are back as franchise protagonists Neo and Trinity, but the characters no longer remember each other following the events of the original “Matrix” trilogy. Franchise newcomer Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Morpheus, but he’s not Lawrence Fishburne’s iteration of the character that fans love.
“I think what the script provided was a new narrative and some new opportunities that did make room within the Matrix universe for a new Morpheus,” Abdul-Mateen II teased to Entertainment Weekly in October. “I play a character who’s definitely aware of the history of the Matrix [and] the history of Morpheus. This character is on a journey of self-discovery. There’s a lot in our story that’s about growth,...

Warner Bros. Pictures has released a first teaser poster along with the website for The Matrix Resurrections, prior to the first big trailer release this Thursday. In the original movie, Neo (Keanu Reeves) was told by Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne): “You take the blue pill…the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill…you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.” Neo chooses the red pill and joins the rebellion.

No talent was announced in advance of Saturday’s “Deadpool 2” panel at San-Diego Comic Con, but big names from the Fox sequel showed up, including Ryan Reynolds. The film’s star and producer was joined by director David Leitch, fellow actors Zazie Beetz (Domino), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), and Stefan Kapičić (Colussus), as well as his co-screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Moderating duties fell to Karan Soni, who plays a New York City cab driver in the franchise.
No mention was made of “X-Force,” the next film featuring Reynolds and Beetz’s characters, which reportedly begins shooting in October. Instead, the group spent an hour promoting the Blu-ray release of “Deadpool 2” (August 21), set to feature an extended cut with jokes and scenes omitted from the theatrical version.

In “Deadpool 2,” Ryan Reynolds’ eponymous mutant antihero has his hands full with the cybernetic Cable (Josh Brolin), the teenage Firefist (Julian Dennison), and a surprise appearance by Marvel superbaddie, Juggernaut (also voiced by Reynolds).
But it’s really no surprise that the highlight is the climactic CG slugfest between mutant giant Colossus (again voiced by Stefan Kapicic) and the immense Juggernaut, who wears a protective steel helmet to prevent his stepbrother, Professor X, from infiltrating his mind.
Preparing for the epic brawl were VFX studio Framestore Montreal, with choreography overseen by director and former stunt coordinator David Leitch and his stunt team.
First, Colossus had to get into shape. In the first movie, the metal giant was Frankensteined together with different facial and mocap performances. This time, he’s more unified. Kapicic’s facial capture and voice performance were simultaneous. Andrei Tricoteux again did mocap, and they built a...

Fans all over the nation were surprised when a familiar face popped up for three seconds in “Deadpool 2.” But did he, or didn’t he, actually film the sequence?

For the first four decades or so of Terrence Malick’s career, a new movie by the one-of-a-kind filmmaker was exceptionally rare. That’s changed since “The Tree of Life” was released five years ago, but what’s remained the same in Malick’s more prolific years is the awe-inducing nature (no pun intended) of his imagery. That’s especially true of “Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience,” the writer/director’s new documentary touching on everything from microscopic organisms to the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs.

Terrence Malick’s “Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience” (narrated by Brad Pitt) ambitiously picks up where he left off in the trippy prologue to “The Tree of Life”: documenting the birth of the cosmos and humankind. It’s his first doc and, if nominated for the VFX Oscar, that would be a first for the category.
As with “Tree of Life,” the VFX were overseen by Dan Glass (“Batman Begins,” “The Matrix” sequels) , creative director of Method, which served as the lead VFX studio. In fact, “Voyage of Time” was made in parallel to its 10-year journey to the big screen (the feature version, “Life’s Journey,” narrated by Cate Blanchett, contains broader appeal than the IMAX educational market).

For more than a decade, Austin-based producers Sarah Green and Nicolas Gonda have helped Terrence Malick to achieve his far-flung filmmaking ambitions. Oscar-nominated “The Tree of Life,” starring Brad Pitt, has come and gone, as well as “Knight of Cups,” starring Christian Bale, and now arrives the 40-years-in-the-making documentary “Voyage of Time,” which actually started shooting in 2003 when renowned nature cinematographer Paul Atkins (who shot second unit on “The Tree of Life”) alerted the filmmakers that volcanoes were erupting in Hawaii.
So, they sent him off to capture some of the most extraordinary shots in the film, as molten lava bursts up under the ocean. One cameraman took the IMAX camera so close to exploding magma that his boots melted.
Backed by an original National Geographic Society grant, IMAX, foreign sales company Wild Bunch and indie distributor Broad Green (which began financing and releasing Malick’s films in 2014) the movie takes two forms.

As Terrence Malick drifts further into his own world, his films have become easy targets. All that gentle, pensive narration and roaming camerawork less interested in actors than gorgeous scenery has been frequently pigeonholed as a parody of the more lyrical storytelling that put the filmmaker on the map decades ago. Malick received something of a rebirth after 20 dormant years with the acclaim for “The Thin Red Line,” “The New World” and “Tree of Life,” a trio of ambitious narratives that reached for ethereal heights. By those standards, the fairly subdued portraits of lonely characters in the relationship drama “To the Wonder” and Hollywood-set “Knight of Cups” felt like half-formed efforts in search of a bigger picture.
Malick finally has widened the lens with “Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey,” an expansive look at the history of all living things, and the operatic expression of spirituality that dominates this visually...

Terrence Malick has taken to tackling the great mysteries of the universe, from love, to time, to the very meaning of life.
His new IMAX journey through the cosmos, “Voyage Of Time,” delves deepest of all. In the featurette below, Dan Glass, the visual effects supervisor, describes the process of producing the stunning and unusual visuals that make up the film.
Glass reveals that the intention with “Voyage of Time” was to create “a timeline of our understanding of history, and the scientific basis upon which life has evolved.”

Glass says part of the team’s approach was to look at the data of scientists and physicists, put cameras into their systems, and then enhance the footage with color. If you’re interested to see a simulation of the Big Bang swirling towards you in beautiful reds and oranges,...

While the 90-minute, Cate Blanchett-narrated Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey just premiered this week at Venice, Tiff will hold the world premiere of the 45-minute, educational, Brad Pitt-narrated Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience soon. Ahead of the premiere and release in October, IMAX has now released a fascinating new featurette for Terrence Malick‘s new documentary, which is guided by VFX supervisor Dan Glass. It goes through the science behind the film, as well as the visual effects, ranging from dinosaurs (once again) to recreating space, and more, much of which we also explored in our making-of feature.
We said in our review of Life’s Journey, “Malick might be singular in his earnest search for the sublime. Voyage of Time resembles much of the director’s recent work in how it may be a Rorschach test for anyone choosing to see it. The audience is...

When Terrence Malick’s long-anticipated space documentary Voyage of Time lands later this year, it’ll arrive in two SKUs; the first of which is The IMAX Experience, a truncated 45-minute version to be narrated by Brad Pitt. Those on the hunt for a more comprehensive experience need look no further than Life’s Journey, the feature-length cut of Malick’s space opus that will feature the dulcet tones of Cate Blanchett.
Brought to life in stunning fashion by VFX steward Dan Glass, who previously collaborated with the filmmaker on The Tree Of Life, Malick is aiming big with Voyage of Time – so big, in fact, that his first documentary is set to chronicle the formative years of the universe and life within it.

Earlier this summer we got the first trailer for Terrence Malick‘s long-gestating Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience, a 45-minute version narrated by Brad Pitt that features “more awestruck and explanatory” narration. For a different, expanded experience, there’s also the 90-minute cut, titled Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey, which is narrated Cate Blanchett, featuring voice-over that is “more searching and poignant, an urgent inquiry from a child of earth to the mother of all.” Today, the gorgeous first trailer for the latter has arrived.

Being that I don’t enjoy — and, by extension, bother with — much contemporary TV, perhaps you should take it with a grain of salt when I say that Sense8 is my favorite series in at least a decade, if not longer. Still, that prerequisite shouldn’t dull the effect of the Wachowskis and J. Michael Straczynski‘s show — directed by the former pairing, Tom Tykwer, James McTeigue, and Dan Glass — which is immensely entertaining, always takes advantage of the endless number of possibilities its concept offers, and evinces a crucial understanding of the many opportunities afforded by long-form storytelling.
It’s also a formally accomplished bit of work, which is thanks in no small part to the helping hand of cinematographer John Toll. It might be surprising that the who shot The Thin Red Line, Braveheart, and Almost Famous would head to a conceptually bizarre sci-fi TV show, but his...

As the Wachowskis’ Sense8 arrives on Netflix, Ryan checks out the first three episodes of this complex sci-fi drama...
Ever since they first beseiged the box-office in 1999, the Wachowskis have specialised in larger-than-life, bombastic images: Keanu Reeves ducking a bullet in beautiful slow-motion in The Matrix, the high-octane psychedelia of Speed Racer and the weird sight of a wolf-eared Channing Tatum flying through the air on jet boots in this year’s Jupiter Ascending.
Yet Sense8 begins not with a bang but with the image of Daryl Hannah writhing about on a fusty mattress. It’s the first in a collection of incongruous sequences which, like a mosaic, gradually come together to form a more intelligible image.
Sense8 is another coup for Netflix after the success of such envelope-pushing shows as Orange Is The New Black and Daredevil. It pairs the Wachowski siblings with J Michael Straczynski, the veteran of...

Lana and Andy Wachowski are about to branch out into a new medium, and anticipation is high as audiences ponder whether their particular brand of storytelling might fare better on the streaming platform Netflix than in cinemas. Since the mixed reactions to 2012’s Cloud Atlas, and the undeniable disappointment of the recent Jupiter Ascending, the heady days of The Matrix brilliance seem increasingly to be a fading memory. For this reason, the arrival of the first trailer for Sense8 is a significant development.

Starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, here’s your first look at the magnificent trailer for The Wachowski Brothers new sci-fi epic Jupiter Ascending.
The film will showcase the kind of cutting-edge visual effects that have become the benchmarks of the Wachowskis’ films. Dan Glass (“Batman Begins,” “Cloud Atlas”) is the film’s visual effects supervisor, a post he has occupied for the Wachowskis since “The Matrix” Trilogy. Additionally, John Gaeta, the visual effects Oscar winner behind “The Matrix,” is contributing to the visual effects design.

No, Channing Tatum will not steal the Wolverine title from Hugh Jackman but the actor is going to play a wolf-human hybrid for the Wachowskis' "Jupiter Ascending." Filming is underway right now and Tatum is co-starring with Mila Kunis. We told you back in April that "Jupiter" is about:
Being the Queen of the Universe! The Wachowski Siblings have started shooting the new sci-fi film "Jupiter Ascending" starring Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Eddie Redmayne, Tuppence Middleton, Doona Bae, James D.Arcy, and Sean Bean.
Like a sci-fi twist on "Cinderella," Kunis stars as Jupiter Jones, Russian immigrant who scrubs toilets for a living but then discovers that she is next in line to be the Queen of the Universe! How quaint!
While promoting his upcoming action flick "White House Down," Tatum revealed to Movieline that he's a "splice" and they are "essentially built in a test tube. I'm a hybrid wolf and human.

Summer 2014 is already full of immensely anticipated blockbusters, and Jupiter Ascending is one of the few I’m most looking forward to, by far.
Coming off the back of co-directing Cloud Atlas with Tom Tykwer, Andy and Lana Wachowski have returned behind the camera to bring their long-awaited Jupiter Ascending to the big screen next year.
Production has officially begun here in Watford over at Warner Bros.’ Leavesen Studios. And the official press release, announcing that the film began shooting at the start of the month, brings with it the first synopsis:

The next film from The Wachowski Siblings (The Matrix trilogy, Cloud Atlas), the Science Fiction film Jupiter Ascending, has officially began production and Warner Bros has released the first synopsis of the film, giving us our first look at the story.
I've always been a fan of the Wachowski's films. I think they're amazing storytellers and I'm so disappointed that Cloud Atlas didn't do as well as it should have in the theaters. Alas, this is the way the film industry goes, especially when it comes to such esoteric fare as Cloud Atlas. Regardless, their next film, Jupiter Ascending, should have some more mass appeal to movie-goers as it's a full on science fiction film. Warner Bros. has issued a press release this morning announcing that cameras have started rolling on the film, and we've got our first synopsis for the movie (it's been underlined):

"Cloud Atlas" might not approach the VFX intensity or complexity of "The Matrix" trilogy or "Speed Racer," but it still required the same level of sophistication and flexibility that the Wachowskis demand. After all, you've got six stories about reincarnation spanning 500 years with the same actors in multiple roles; a mash-up of genres; and three directors split into two production units (with Andy and Lana sharing one and buddy Tom Tykwer tackling the other). Fortunately, the Wachowskis were in the very capable hands of frequent collaborator Dan Glass, who served as senior VFX supervisor. Glass oversaw the VFX of their production unit while Stef Ceretti handled Tykwer's. Glass, who fittingly segued from one cosmic movie, Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life," runs the Method VFX studio where Ceretti works, and divided the work between Method's La, London, and Vancouver facilities while also bringing in several other...

The 84th Annual Academy Awards ended up being one of the most entertaining Academy Award shows that I've seen in years, even though films I wanted to win didn't. I was rooting for Martin Scorsese and Hugo this year, but I knew that The Artist would end up taking home a majority of the big awards. In the end, each one of these films took home 5 Awards, Hugo took home the more technical ones though. I think it was a pretty easy year to predict the winners.
It was great to see Billy Crystal back up on stage; he really did a great job bringing light, fun entertainment that everyone could enjoy. Crystal was awesome and one of the best parts of the show. The guy is classic comedy. He helped bring back everything that the Oscars should be.
Here's the full list of nominees with the winners in bold.

"The Adventures of Tintin" dominated the nominations but it was "Rango" that received the most trophies at the 10th Visual Effects Society (Ves) awards. Stan Lee received the the Lifetime Achievement Award and visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull received the George Melies Award. Patton Oswalt hosted the event held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Antonion Banderas, Lou Ferrigno, director Chris Miller, Marc Webb, and Jennifer Yuh Nelson presented awards. But the surprise appearance by Martin Scorsese was the highlight of the evening.

This morning, Jennifer Lawrence and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards. The winners will be announced during the televised ceremony on February 26, 2012. Let’s get right into the nominations:
Best Picture
The Artist
The Descendants
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
The Help
Hugo
Midnight in Paris
Moneyball
The Tree of Life
War Horse
Snubs:
Bridesmaids
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Ides of March
50/50
Shame
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II
The Artist and The Descendants may stack up on top alphabetically, but they’re neatly placed in this two-horse race with the B&W, silent era drama in the easy lead. An upset is possible, I suppose, but a Descendants win would be more upsetting since its one of the weakest in Payne’s career. Extremely Loud & Yada Yada comes as a huge surprise though. Chock it...

This morning the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards. Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone, The Hunger Games) read the new Oscar nods, with by Academy President Tom Sherak. The big nominees were The Descendants, The Artist, and Hugo, all which come as no surprise. But Moneyball scored four big nominations, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy also walked away with a couple big nods, and The Muppets is now Oscar-nominated. The Adventures of Tintin was shut out of the Best Animated Film category, and Andy Serkis did not end up with a nomination for his work in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. As is so often the case with the Oscars, you can make a list of snubs that is almost longer than the nomination list. Indie faves got nothing: Michael Fassbender's performance in Shame is not recognized, and Martha Marcy May Marlene...

The visual effects that we are seeing in movies these days are absolutely mind blowing. At this point it doesn't seem like there's any excuse for a film to have bad visual effects unless the people hired lack talent, or the studio is keeping the cash in their pockets.
There's a lot of good nomination this year such as Captain America, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Out of all of these I think that Planet of the Apes might take home the top prize, those apes were incredibly freaky looking. Weta did an amazing job with this movie, and out of all the other nominations this was the movie I was most impressed by. What are your thoughts? What movie did you think have the best visual effect in 2011?
Here's the full press release with all of the nominations:

hollywoodnews.com: Over the weekend, the Visual Effects Society announced the nominees for its 10th Annual Ves Awards ceremony, recognizing summer tentpoles (“Harry Potter,” “Captain America”) and surprise hits (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” “Hugo”) for their outstanding visual effects artistry in 23 categories of film, animation, television, commercials, special venues and video games.
“The standard of the creative work that is being considered this year is unbelievably high across all categories,” said Jeffrey A. Okun, Chair of the Visual Effects Society. “The judges faced a huge challenge because all of the work was so far above the norm. We’re honored to have the opportunity to focus the spotlight on the outstanding work that has contributed to some of the highest grossing films and broadcast projects of all time.”

He blew minds with SFX work in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, and he's doing it again in Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life. In a rare interview, we catch up with a true visionary
Even for a director as accomplished as Terrence Malick, creating the universe can present a few problems. Hardly known for his special effects extravaganzas, Malick's approach to film-making – capturing spontaneous events – doesn't jibe with the pre-planned discipline of CGI processes; they're just too synthetic for his more organic methodology. Instead, Malick had to go with methods and skill sets that have virtually vanished. For the spectacular, epic, 22-minute birth of creation sequence in his new film The Tree of Life, Malick contacted one of the few people with the necessary experience, ability and creative drive to get the results he needed. In short, he needed Douglas Trumbull, a man who hadn't worked...

In yesterday's Los Angeles Times, John Horn and Steven Zeitchik report on the uphill battle Fox Searchlight will be fighting this summer as they roll out Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life from just four theaters this weekend in New York and Los Angeles to eight more cities next week, all the way to 200 by the July 4 holiday weekend. In short, they realize that Brad Pitt and the Palme d'Or alone won't hack it. If marketing success were measured by the sheer bulk of critical coverage, though — and, Lord knows, it isn't — the team could already be resting on its laurels.
Reverse Shot, for example, has spent all this past week with the film, running five essays in all. Here in The Notebook, we've had Daniel Kasman's first impressions from Cannes and, on Thursday, Ignatiy Vishnevetsky's (if you'll allow us) magnificent review. Both follow, of course,...
