In 1843, London publishers Chapman & Hall released A Christmas Carol. Written by Charles Dickens and illustrated by John Leech, it was inspired in part by Dickens’s anger at inequality in his country, especially as it affected children. Despite its aversion to the upper classes, A Christmas Carol was an immediate hit among readers and critics. Given the book’s popularity, it’s no surprise that movie makers have picked up on the story many times. Between its clear redemption arc and ghostly premise, the story has everything that a good movie needs.
Still, not every adaptation of A Christmas Carol is created equal. So if you’re looking for the best of the worst man in film and literature, check out these ten great movies. And if you don’t like my picks, well, bah humbug I say.

Travis Bickle will not be singing the praises of Uber any time soon.
Online cinephiles did a collective double take this week as rumors began to circulate that Robert De Niro would be reprising his role from “Taxi Driver” in an upcoming Uber commercial that would air in the United Kingdom. Many were quick to point out that the character — who loses his sanity after his job as a taxi driver exposes him to the worst of humanity and is eventually radicalized to commit acts of violence due to his firsthand look at child prostitution — is not exactly a compelling spokesperson for the ride sharing industry.
It appeared to be a strange career move for De Niro — who has long been open about his interest in making a “Taxi Driver” sequel — and caught the attention of the film’s screenwriter, Paul Schrader.

Sofia Coppola took a seat at New York’s Bookmarc on Sunday to sign copies of her first book, Sofia Coppola Archive: 1999-2023. The event inspired hundreds to hit the sidewalk and queue up for hours in a line that snaked through the West Village streets while fans waited for their chance to meet the filmmaker and snag an autograph. “It was so nice to meet so many young kids that were all dressed up and excited,” Coppola told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday night, moments after she arrived to a different kind of scene at L.A.’s Chateau Marmont.
There were plenty of youthful attendees, albeit more famous, a frenzy for Archive and everyone was fashionably suited courtesy of Chanel, which hosted the event to celebrate Coppola’s new tome and toast their longtime ambassador, collaborator and friend. But the only line that formed was the one...

One of the most talked-about movies at this year’s Venice Film Festival was Priscilla, Sofia Coppola’s vividly realized portrait of how 14-year-old Priscilla Presley fell under the spell of Elvis Presley, the rock & roll icon who was 24 when they first met. The filmmaker has earned her best reviews in years for the drama, and its star, Cailee Spaeny, took home the fest’s Best Actress award.

Richard Donner’s Scrooged is an unassailable holiday classic. If you’re channel surfing on Christmas Eve, you’re all but guaranteed to run into this film at some point. While versions of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol are a dime a dozen at Christmas time, Scrooged is different. A spoof of the classic tale that swaps Victorian-era London for a 1980s Yuppie-filled NYC, Bill Murray stars as Frank Cross, the meanest TV exec in the business. When not producing fare like “The Night the Reindeer Died” (with Lee Majors – the Six Million Dollar Man!), he torments his employees, including Alfie Woodard as his Bob Cratchit stand-in, Grace Cooley and Bobcat Goldthwait’s Elliot Loudermilk. But, of course, Cross wasn’t always a miser, with Karen Allen’s Claire Philips reminding him of the gentle guy he used to be.

Ad-libbing is an art relished by many of the great comedy actors of our time, like Steve Martin, the late John Candy, and Robin Williams, just to name a few. It helps actors add their own unique flavor to their respective roles, which makes for more authentic and natural performances. The downside is that capturing actors' off-the-cuff quips can cause complications on set, as was the case with Martin and Candy on the holiday classic "Planes, Trains and Automobiles." Another example can be found in yet another holiday classic: 1988's "Scrooged."
In the movie, which is a modern update to Charles Dickens' 1983 novella "A Christmas Carol," Bill Murray plays Frank Cross, a young Ebenezer Scrooge-like TV executive who is ironically the showrunner of an upcoming live production of "A Christmas Carol." Before the show, he is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. They respectively show him his evil origin story,...

The 1988 Christmas fantasy film "Scrooged" takes us on a wild and dark ride with Frank Cross, a mean-spirited, anti-Christmas TV executive who oversees a live production of -- guess what? -- "A Christmas Carol," the classic Charles Dickens novella that the movie itself is based on. "Scrooged" itself is, in some ways, one of those overlooked holiday movies. If one were to ask its star, Bill Murray, why that is, he might single out the way the movie was shot as the reason it hasn't caught on with a larger audience.
A real-life Scrooge, Frank (Murray) loudly berates his subordinates -- and when I say loudly, I mean loudly. He forces a single mother (who has to run her mute son to the doctor) to work overtime, fires a guy who dares to critique his random and absurdly violent commercial that has absolutely nothing to do with "A Christmas Carol,...

Sofia Coppola had a crush on actor Bill Murray for decades. She’s worked with him on “Lost in Translation,” which yielded four Oscar nominations; the star-crammed 2015 one-hour Netflix Christmas special “A Very Murray Christmas,” which they wrote with Mitch Glazer, co-starring Murray, George Clooney, Michael Cera, Amy Poehler and Rashida Jones; and “On the Rocks” which reunited Coppola, Murray, and Jones, the latter in a role modeled — as Scarlett Johansson’s was in “Lost in Translation” — on Coppola herself.
This time, Murray landed Supporting Actor Golden Globe and Critics Choice nominations for his larger-than-life art dealer trying to help his novelist daughter make sense of her writing, marriage, and parenting. With Murray, Coppola said on the phone, “the character takes over. He had to be charismatic and come take over her life. That’s part of the dynamic of this film. And I knew she was strong enough to hold her own with him.

Mitch Glazer and Michael O’Donoghue are not necessarily names that will be remembered by many film fans today. However, in the ‘80s, the duo was one of the more interesting writing pairs working in Hollywood, eventually penning the script for the 1988 comedy classic, “Scrooged.” But that Bill Murray film isn’t the most interesting project the two men worked on. Hell, “Scrooged” isn’t even the most interesting Bill Murray project they developed.

Apple has officially entered the feature film world.
Apple and A24 have teamed up on their first film under their recently formed partnership with “On the Rocks,” Sofia Coppola’s next pic, reteaming her with her “Lost in Translation” star Bill Murray along with Rashida Jones.
Coppola will direct from a script she wrote. Coppola and Youree Henley will also produce. Mitch Glazer and Roman Coppola are exec producing.
The film follows a young mother who reconnects with her larger-than-life playboy father on an adventure through New York.
Production is set to start next month in New York and marks A24 and Coppola’s second go-around, having previously partnered on “The Bling Ring.” The acquisition marks a major get for Apple’s first feature production, given the heat a Coppola-Murray package would spark with other studios.

Happy 46th birthday to Oscar-winning actress, food writer, businesswoman and singer Gwyneth Paltrow! She is the daughter of the late esteemed TV producer Bruce Paltrow (“St. Elsewhere) and the Emmy and Tony-winning actress Blythe Danner. But Gwyneth was determined to carve out her own path in life and that she certainly has achieved in the movies.
Paltrow starred in the 1998 surprise Best Picture winner “Shakespeare in Love,” for which she won the Academy Award as Best Actress. She also earned a Golden Globe Award and two Screen Actors Guild Awards (for Best Actress and Best Ensemble) for that performance. She also picked up a second Globe nomination for her work playing a mathematician in 2005’s “Proof.”
Paltrow has gone on to create the successful lifestyle magazine Goop and has become a highly-respected writer on the food scene. In honor of this multi-talented lady on her big day, let’s...

Imagine a world in which the cable news networks had nothing to say. It’s become unthinkable in 2018, what with the relentless churn of headlines. But that fantasy is what fuels Michael Che and Colin Jost, the anchors of “Saturday Night Live’s” immensely popular “Weekend Update” segment, as they contemplate taking on yet another challenge — hosting the Emmy Awards for the first time. The two men, who’ve made their mark with political zingers, are focusing on finding new sources of material to mine for their humor.
“What if Anderson Cooper was like, ‘I got nothing,’” posits Che over drinks at Bar SixtyFive at Manhattan’s fabled Rainbow Room.
“Sorry,” says Jost, mimicking the CNN anchor. “What else? What else? No?”
Of course, having no CNN, no “Face the Nation,” no Fox News Channel, would likely put the duo out of work. It might also make their hosting gig...

Cary Sherman, who has served as chairman and CEO of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for seven years, after a 20-year tenure at the trade association, is retiring at the end of 2018 to be succeeded by Mitch Glazer. But before exiting his post, Sherman, a veteran lawyer, took a moment to address a crowd of music professionals at the Midem Conference in Cannes on the seismic shifts he’s seen in the last two decades and reflect on the lessons he’s learned.
Read Sherman’s speech in its entirety below:
Over the past fifty years, the music business has gone from vinyl records to cassettes to 8-tracks to CDs to downloads to streams, and somehow back again to vinyl. Go figure.
Throughout that time, I have had the privilege of representing the U.S. recording industry in the struggle for smart, fair music policy from our government.

With a name to ring a dozen Hollywood bells every time it’s spoken a new film from Sofia Coppola will always bring a measure of excitement. The last film she produced was the Netflix Holiday special A Very Murray Christmas, which she directed and co-wrote with Bill Murray and Mitch Glazer. Before that she stood in the eye of the Californian fame hurricane with 2013’s The Bling Ring, which followed the languid Somewhere from 2010. Today her new film, The Beguiled, had its first trailer revealed and we’re a million miles from Tinseltown.
The film was adapted by Coppola from Thomas Cullinan 1966’s novel A Painted Devil and Don Siegel’s own cinematic adaptation of the story in 1971 (a film which shares the name The Beguiled). The stage is set in 1863, during the American Civil War, at an all-girls boarding school in Mississippi. An injured Union...

Even Bill Murray and Barry Levinson cannot rescue this confused rags to rock riches story, inspired by a real-life talent show contestant
One presumes that veteran director Barry Levinson envisaged this Mitch Glazer-scripted comedy about a has-been rock promoter working his shtick in Kabul as Good Morning Afghanistan, although the phrase “Good Night, Vienna” better describes its reception in America, where it tanked spectacularly last year. No wonder: it’s a dog’s dinner of a movie which not even the usually reliable Bill Murray can raise above the level of confused, cliched claptrap. Murray plays Richie Lanz, who comes to Kabul on the promise of rich pickings, and winds up attempting to help Leem Lubany’s Pashtun prodigy Salima defy death threats by singing on national TV.

Behold Bill Murray as the white savior barreling into a foreign land and teaching the ignorant natives how to be better people. Obnoxious and tone deaf. I’m “biast” (pro): love Bill Murray
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Bill Murray is Richie Lanz, a sleazy Los Angeles music manager. He’s the kind of guy who takes money from a wannabe singer with no talent and no chance of even the most measly sort of success but who is also naive enough to believe that it’s normal to pay him upfront. And he’s clearly been stringing along his assistant, Ronnie (Zooey Deschanel: Your Highness, Yes Man), who has been working for him in the expectation that she will get a boost to her own singing career. So when he takes her to Kabul — yes, in Afghanistan — to perform for U.

As in in years previous, the 15th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival honors a variety of actors and filmmakers as part of their highlighting of global cinema. This year’s opening gala honored legendary comedic actor Bill Murray, who was also in attendance to promote his recent film Rock the Kasbah, which was filmed in Morocco. The ceremony began with a brief speech from director Sofia Coppola, who extolled over Murray’s virtues as an uncanny comedic force and one of her close personal friends, having directed him in her monumental film Lost in Translation and, more recently, a Netflix Christmas special A Very Murray Christmas. The actor then took the stage and gave a heartfelt speech about his gratitude but also his heavy heart, sighting the recent tragedies in Paris and San Bernardino. This led to an empowering message of how the people around the world need...

Parades and pigskin aside, there wasn't much happening on television during the week of Thanksgiving. But for the past seven days? The box has been overstuffed. While various series are racing toward their seasonal end games, the networks have begun trotting out some early holiday diversions, hoping to capitalize on the viewers who are already eager to surround themselves with mistletoe and holly. There were even a few premieres last week, including a sneak preview of NBC's new sitcom Superstore, the return of Bravo's Top Chef, and a single-episode sneak-peek...

The Netflix musical-variety special A Very Murray Christmas doesn’t amount to much, yet it’s sublime; maybe it’s sublime because it shows no evidence of needing to make any kind of impression. It moseys across the screen, occasionally helping itself to a cookie or some eggnog, and every few minutes somebody sings a song. As written and co-produced by Murray, Scrooged co-writer Mitch Glazer, and director Sofia Coppola — who gave Murray one of his signature roles in Lost in Translation — it might as well be the fantasy of one of Murray’s earliest beloved characters, the lounge singer Nick from Second City and Saturday Night Live. That character’s hepcat facetiousness was a cover for the depression he surely felt at having to perform for handfuls of bored and distracted patrons in railway-station bars, airport cocktail lounges, and Army bases in Greenland.Murray stars here as Bill Murray,...

"Everyone is happy when they see him ," says Sofia Coppola, who directed the special, available on the streaming service starting today. "He knows how to bring joy. Bill is so full of fun, it brightens up the holiday.

“A Very Murray Christmas” is an endearing white elephant gift to the world from Bill Murray and his friends. Created by the cult-hero comedian, his long-time writing partner Mitch Glazer, and director Sofia Coppola, the one-hour Netflix special embraces the strangeness of celebrity holiday sing-alongs without attempting to make an inherently corny TV institution seem cool. “There was never any logic to those shows,” Coppola says. “There's more of a story to ours than a straight variety show, but we...
