Echo Lake Entertainment has optioned Melissa Gould’s memoir “Widowish” to develop it as a TV series, Variety has learned exclusively.
The book tells the story of Gould’s life after the unexpected death of her husband. Left to raise their adolescent daughter on her own, and act as if she could resume life without him by her side, Gould found that she didn’t fit the typical idea of widowhood or meet the expectations of mourning. She didn’t look like a widow or act like a widow, but she felt like one.
The book was an Amazon best-seller and one of BookAuthority’s picks for best grief book of all time. It has been featured in Maria Shriver’s Sunday Paper, Katie Couric’s Wake-Up Call Newsletter, The Gabby Reece Show Podcast, SiriusXM’s Just Jenny show, and other media outlets including Good Morning America.

My husband died unexpectedly seven years ago due to complications of multiple sclerosis and West Nile virus. West Nile virus is contracted by mosquitoes, so to simplify, Joel died of a mosquito bite. Crazy, right? Or maybe that’s just the grief talking.
Joel had just turned 50 when he died. I was in my mid-forties when I became a widow and our daughter had just turned 13. She is an only child; I became an only parent. (I write about all of this in my recently released memoir, Widowish.) I did not know how I would survive this loss.

With The Lizzie McGuire Movie, the big-screen version of the popular television series Lizzie McGuire, hitting theaters today, the Walt Disney Co. has quietly struck a deal with writer Melissa Gould to pen a potential sequel. Gould did not write the first McGuire film -- it was written by the TV series' executive producer Susan Estelle Jansen and Ed Decter and John Strauss -- but Gould has worked as a writer on the series. The possible sequel is in the early stages of development, with no story line yet announced, and McGuire star Hilary Duff yet to sign on. The first McGuire film centers on the teenager going on a summer vacation to Italy after graduating from junior high. In addition to writing for the small-screen McGuire, Gould has written for such successful TV series as Party of Five and Beverly Hills, 90210. Gould is repped by ICM.
