During his active service in the Middle East, as part of the Army Film
Unit, he survived two almost fatal accidents - first after driving over
a landmine near Tobruk, and second, when his ship, HMS Sikh, was sunk.
After the last incident he was transported to northern Italy as a
prisoner of war. After escape and recaptures he ended up at Offlag 79
camp, near Brunswick before finally being freed in 1945 by American
troops.
