Sony Pictures Intl. Productions Boards ‘The New Toy’ With Daniel Auteuil, Jamel Debbouze (Exclusive)
Sony Pictures Intl. Productions has boarded “The New Toy,” a French comedy that will be directed by James Huth and will be headlined by Cesar award-winner Daniel Auteuil and popular French comedian Jamel Debbouze.
“The New Toy” is inspired by Francis Veber’s 1976 cult classic “The Toy,” which was previously remade in the U.S. by Richard Donner in 1982 with Richard Pryor and Jackie Gleason in the leading roles.
Huth penned the adapted screenplay with Sonja Shillito. In the original film, a poor journalist finds himself as a toy of a boss’s son. Making friends with the naughty child, he tries to save him from the cruel power of his father.
“’The Toy’ was Francis Veber’s first film and it left a mark on me when it was released in theaters in 1976,” said the well-established French producer Richard Grandpierre, who is producing “The New Toy.”
“I have seen it dozens of times.

Jan Kounen’s comedy “My Cousin,” starring Vincent Lindon and François Damiens, will be one of the biggest French releases of the year. The film screens Friday at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris. In an exclusive interview with Variety, he talks about his key motivations for the project.
“My Cousin” is about two cousins (Lindon and Damiens) with wildly incompatible personalities and different ways of life, set in a luxurious Bordeaux vineyard. It marks a major new departure for Kounen, and is his first feature film for 11 years, after his 2009 Cannes closing film, “Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky.”
Kounen has a cult following from previous pics such as “Dobermann” (1997), and spiritual Western “Blueberry” (2004), and is well known for his interest in shamanism, including his 2004 documentary “Other Worlds.” This interest has fed into his recent Vr projects – “Ayahuasca” (Kosmik Journey), “7 Lives” and “-22.7°C.”

Mon cousin
It’s been eleven years since Dutch born Jan Kounen has unveiled a new feature, but in 2020 we’ll finally see him return with his fifth film, the comedy Mon cousin. Produced by Richard Grandpierre (Noe’s Irreversible and Climax) and lensed by Guillaume Schiffman (who has shot all of Michel Hazanavicius’ films), Kounen’s latest is co-written by Fabrice Roger-Lacan and actor Vincent Lindon (who also stars). Francois Damiens appears to be the sidekick. Kounen, something of a cult favorite thanks to a pair of oddball Vincent Cassel vehicles (1997’s Dobermann and 2004’s Renegade), closed the 2009 Cannes Film Festival with Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky, which starred Anna Mouglalis and Mads Mikkelsen.…...

Netflix’s international film VP David Kosse has unveiled a slate of non-English-language movies that will head into production in 2020.
The former STXinternational topper’s projects span French, German and Italian-language projects, and include feature adaptations of Robert Harris’ novel “Munich” and Hanna Jameson’s “The Last.”
Out of France, “Bigbug” follows a group of bickering suburbanites who find themselves stuck together when an android uprising causes their well intentioned household robots to lock them in for their own safety. Oscar-nominated helmer Jean-Pierre Jeunet (“Amélie”) directs. Guillaume Laurant and Jean-Pierre Jeunet are writing and Eskwad’s Richard Grandpierre and Frédéric Doniguian are producing.
German and English-language “Transatlantic 473” will be directed by Peter Thorwarth (“The Last Cop”). He co-writes with Stefan Holz and the plot turns on a hijacking with a supernatural twist.
“Munich” will also be in German and English. Ben Power is adapting the book, which is set in pre-Second World War Europe.

A24 has landed domestic rights to Argentine-born director Gaspar Noé’s hallucinatory new film provocation “Climax,” the company announced Monday.
The film, which premiered Sunday in the Directors Fortnight section at the Cannes Film Festival, stars Sofia Boutella as a dancer prepping for a professional dance competition whose troupe gets sidetracked by an LSD-induced orgy.
TheWrap critic Ben Croll raved that “this tale of stylized hysteria is an absolute scream.”

Terms of the deal and release plans were not immediately available.
Edouard Weil, Vincent Maraval, Richard Grandpierre and Michel Merkt produced the film. Vice Studios’ Danny Gabai and Eddy Moretti served as executive producers.
CAA Media Finance brokered the deal on behalf of the filmmakers. Wild Bunch is handling international sales.
Since its founding in 2012, the New York-based indie A24 has had big success with more provocative cinematic affair, including Oscar winners like “Room” and “Moonlight” — as well as last year’s awards-season sensations “Lady Bird” and “The Florida Project.”

A24 is in negotiations to acquire U.S. rights to Gaspar Noe’s Climax.
Never a company to shy from sensationalism, A24 emerged as the likely suitor for Noe's latest bacchanal that stars Sofia Boutella as a dancer who finds pleasure in a no-rules forest orgy.
The Hollywood Reporter's review called it a "rousing work [that] could break through with young audiences keen for something radically different from their normal cinematic diet."
The film, which was shot in February, made its world premiere in the directors' fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival.

Exclusive: A24 just landed one of the hot titles of the Cannes Film Festival, buying domestic rights to Gaspar Noe’s Climax. The widely acclaimed Directors’ Fortnight film blew away critics and audiences.
Written and directed by Noé, the film stars Sofia Boutella and follows a young street dance troupe who gather in a forest for a celebration that descends into madness. It has been referred to as a sadistic Step Up, and its young cast and crossover into genre makes it a strong candidate to be the filmmaker’s commercial breakout.

Exclusive: French sales champion says he has “no intention” of leaving the company he helped build.
Wild Bunch co-chief Vincent Maraval has denied persistent rumours he is on the verge of departing the Paris-based film company he helped found more than 15 years ago.

His resulting absence from Wild Bunch’s Paris HQ has stoked suggestions that he may be planning to cut loose from the company and transfer to Los Angeles. But speaking to Screen during the Afm, Maraval said nothing could be further from the truth.

"Although I will keep to a form of storytelling of this timeless fairy tale that is in keeping with the same pace and characters as the original," said Gans, "I will surprise the audience by creating a completely new visual universe never experienced before and produce images of an unparalleled quality."
"Every single one of my movies has presented me with a challenge but this one is, by far, the most exciting and rewarding."
"Beauty and the Beast" (French: "La Belle et la Bête"), a traditional fairy tale, about a prince supernaturally changed into a 'beast', was first published in 1740. The best-known written version was published in 1756 by Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont. The first English translation appeared in 1757.

The most talked-about, shocked-about and divisive movie at the Cannes Film Festival last year wasn’t an entry in any of the competitive strands. It was only screened twice in the marketplace, and quickly became the hottest topic of every conversation. Those who loved it absolutely loved it; those who hated it felt it marked a nadir in extreme degradation, the ultimate in so-called “torture porn” and the end of cinematic civilization. But for this Fangorian, Pascal Laugier’s Martyrs is the clearest indication yet that today’s French horror is the only platform allowing a currently all-too-safe genre to find its excitement, power and strength again.
Laugier’s esoteric development of an everyday tabloid headline into a Clive Barker-esque underworld nightmare is a challenging, disturbing and thoroughly uncompromising work. It couldn’t be further from the tired, old-style mainstream scary movie that too many purveyors seem to think is all that’s required.
