Casey Bloys, chief content officer at HBO and HBO Max, said he basically doesn’t know whether Mare of Easttown will be back.
“People tend to think that those decisions are like ABC in the 70s – ‘We we need more Mare, we need more Mare!’ the exec told a press gathering in New York City today of the acclaimed limited series.
“It’s a decision with Brad [Ingelsby] and with Kate [Winslet]. I would rely on them coming to us, saying, ‘We think there’s more, here is what it is,” he said, “It’s not a foregone conclusion that just because something does well” it gets another season.
“It starts with the creative team. I am never the one driving it.”

The limited series — created, written and executive produced by showrunner Brad Inglesby — features Winslet in the role of Mare Sheehan, a detective from Pennsylvania. Disney-Pixar’s fantasy film “Onward” launched with $2 million in North America on Thursday night in preview shows.

“Onward” is expected to dominate domestic moviegoing this weekend and collect between $40 million and $45 million at 4,310 sites. The movie centers on a pair of teenage elf brothers — voiced by Chris Pratt and Tom Holland — on a quest to resurrect their dead father, who had arranged for them to receive a magic staff with a spell that will bring him back for only 24 hours so his sons can meet him.
Critical reception has been enthusiastic, earning the film an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Octavia Spencer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lena Waithe and Ali Wong are also in the voice cast. “Monsters University” helmer Dan Scanlon...

Ben Affleck struggles with sobriety in Warner Bros.’ first trailer for his sports drama “The Way Back.”
Affleck plays construction worker Jack Cunningham, who has a routine of drinking at every opportunity — in the shower, at work and at home. That routine is interrupted when he’s asked to coach the high school basketball team on which Affleck’s character was once the star. The job opened up because the previous coach suffered a heart attack.
Affleck takes the gig, explaining, “It keeps me busy. Keeps my mind off of other things.” He then tells one of the team’s players bluntly, “The reason they’re leaving you open is you can’t hit the ocean from the beach.”
That’s followed by more footage of an inebriated Jack, with Affleck saying in a voiceover, “I spent a lot of time hurting myself. I made a lot of bad decisions.

Ben Affleck stars in drama The Way Back, reuniting with The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor for a story that’s close to home.
The Way Back may be a Warner Bros. Pictures drama starring Ben Affleck, but the film, which focuses on a high school basketball coach battling alcoholism, also seems to be a therapeutic performance exercise for its star, who, in recent years, has made headlines for that very issue.
Gavin O’Connor directed The Way Back, reuniting with Ben Affleck, whom he directed in the acclaimed 2014 action drama, The Accountant, for which sequel plans are still in the works. O’Connor worked off a screenplay by Brad Ingelsby, who’s known from 2013’s Out of the Furnace, 2015’s Run All Night, 2018’s American Woman and The Friend, a drama that releases this weekend, starring Casey Affleck and Dakota Johnson.

Ben Affleck reteams with his director on “The Accountant” Gavin O’Connor for his latest film, “The Way Back.” This time, though, he’s not a mild-mannered math whiz battling super spies. Instead, he’s forced to fight his own alcoholism.
“The Way Back” is a sobering and inspirational turn for Affleck, in which he plays Jack Cunningham, a former high school basketball phenom struggling with alcohol addiction and gets the opportunity to coach his old high school team. In trying to get them back on the winning path, he might be able to find his own redemption.
“I spent a lot of time hurting myself. I made a lot of bad decisions. I have a lot of regrets,” Affleck says in the trailer. “You guys earned this tonight.”

“Power” star Omari Hardwick is in final negotiations to lead the upcoming horror-thriller “Spell,” sources tell Variety.
Hardwick’s attachment to the Paramount Players project comes just as his hit crime drama is set to finish up with its sixth and final season.
“Spell” follows a man (Hardwick) who crashes his plane while en route to rural Appalachia with his family for a funeral and awakens to find himself totally alone and without his bearings. Relieved to be discovered by a seemingly kind elderly couple, he has no way of knowing the dark machinations that lie in wait as he is pulled deeper and deeper into a sinister world.
“Hush” (2008) and “House at the End of the Street” director Mark Tonderai will helm from a script by “Point Break” (2015) and “Total Recall” (2012) scribe Kurt Wimmer. Wimmer will also produce along with Gordon Gray, Morris Chestnut and Brian Wilkins.
“Spell” will hit theaters Aug.

Exclusive: Deadline has learned that the Gavin O’Connor-directed Ben Affleck movie The Way Back (ne Torrance) is jumping from its Oct. 18 release to March 6, 2020.
In the movie, Affleck stars as a former basketball all-star, who after struggling with addiction, attempts to comeback by becoming the coach of a disparate high school basketball team at his alma mater. We hear that test results for The Way Back were solid and that it’s a commercial film. On its new date, the adult-demo targeted The Way Back will have more breathing room versus the crowded fall marketplace. The March launch date also allows Warners to take advantage of the start of basketball season and promote it during that time during Ncaa and NBA.
Those wide releases left standing on Oct. 18 is Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Sony’s Zombieland 2: Double Tap. On its new March date, The Way Back...
