As part of its Tuesday panel at the Television Critics Association 2023 winter press tour, Masterpiece has announced two new projects including a biographical series about Noele “Nolly” Gordon starring Helena Bonham Carter and “Moonflower Murders,” the follow up project to “Magpie Murders,” are in the works for the network.
“Nolly” tells the story of the British soap opera legend whose unceremonious firing from her hit show at the height of her career was front-page news. As one of the most famous faces on British TV in the 1960s and ’70s, Gordon is described as a woman who refused to play by the rules and ultimately transformed into a forgotten icon after the industry turned on her. Carter will star in the titular role.
“Doctor Who” showrunner Russell T. Davies penned the script. “Nolly” marks the first production from Nicola Shindler’s new production company Quay Street Productions, which is part of ITV Studios.

Exclusive: Anthony Horowitz believes his upcoming Magpie Murders adaptation is “the first time I’ve really got it right,” and has stated he will no longer write on classic TV murder mysteries.

The 2022 edition of the Visions du Réel film festival in Nyon, Switzerland, will present its Honorary Award to Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio. The Fists In My Pocket and The Traitor director will attend the festival to pick up his prize. Timothy Spall will star alongside Lesley Manville in the Masterpiece, BritBox UK and Eleventh Hour Films adaptation of “Magpie Murders,” Anthony Horowitz’s international bestseller.
Spall will play detective Atticus Pünd in the mystery-within-a-mystery in “Magpie Murders.” In the story, book editor Susan Ryeland (Manville) sits down to read the latest manuscript written by her popular author, Alan Conway, the writer behind the popular Atticus Pünd mystery series. When she discovers that its final chapter is missing, she goes to Conway’s house only to find his dead body. The story goes back and forth between the cozy case Pünd was trying to crack and Ryeland’s investigation of what happened to Conway.
Horowitz, who created the BBC mystery shows “Foyle’s War” and “Midsomer Murders,” has adapted “Magpie Murders” as a six-episode series. Production begins next week in England and Ireland, and “Magpie Murders” will air on Masterpiece on PBS next year.

The Hulu literary adaptation, starring Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington, snuck in an unexpected quip referencing one of the most (in)famous legacies of Friends and its influence on pop culture.
The joke is so quick that if you tuned out for just a second, you might have missed it! When Elena (Reese's character) takes her daughter Izzy (Megan Stott) to a hair salon to fix a rebellious self-cut disaster in the first episode, she has some idea for the stylist. Her suggestion? Make Izzy's hair look like "Rachel from Friends." Not only is it a funny throwaway joke that shows just how out of touch Elena is about the trends for modern styles, but it's a great and subtle callback to Witherspoon's acting past and present: she...

ITV's Collision is getting an American remake for NBC.
Anthony Horowitz, creator and writer of the original 2009 series, will be working with CSI's Carol Mendelsohn to bring the project to TV screens in the Us.
Horowitz is penning the first two episodes of a proposed ten-episode order.
"Collision was one of the first genuine event dramas when it aired on ITV in 2009. Uniquely stripped across five continuous nights, it was watched and talked about by millions of viewers," said producer Jill Green.
"We are delighted to now be working on a 'local' version for NBC, as it was always Anthony's and my dream that the drama should exist on a larger scale and as a longer-length series.
"This is a country where it is routine to use your car to get everywhere - and never give it a second thought. The drama has universal, relatable characters and fuses together multiple genres.

"Look at [Reese], she's so cute," the Cake actress exclaimed to Et's Nancy O'Dell on the Oscars red carpet. "So pretty, she's my little sister, even if she's [just] my TV sister."
Who could forget Witherspoon's two-episode stint on Friends in 2000 when she played Jill Green, Rachel's little sister who tried to seduce Ross (David Schwimmer)? Certainly not Eddie Redmayne!

ITV has announced that Foyle's War will end after its current series.
The long-running period drama starring Michael Kitchen will air its final episode on Sunday (January 18) at 8pm.
The final episode 'Elise' will see Christopher Foyle (Kitchen) solving his final ever case in the two-hour special. It will feature Foyle looking into Hilda Pierce's (Ellie Haddington) secret role during the war, following an assassination attempt on her life.
Writer and creator Anthony Horowitz said: "It feels a terrible wrench to say goodbye to characters I've lived with for more than 15 years. But the truth is that I'm not sure there are any more stories to tell and anyway it was always my intention to end on a high note and I think this year's episodes are the very best we've done.
"I'm proud of what we've achieved with Foyle's War and I'm very grateful to the audience that has...

September 15, on Masterpiece Mystery, former Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle will begin a new war. If a television series can win the lottery, “Foyle’s War,” the British series about a policeman solving crimes against the backdrop of the Second World War, has won not once but twice. In 2000, ITV, Britain’s commercial public television Channel 3, suddenly decided it needed a new detective since its iconic “Inspector Morse” was coming to an end. “About 300 ideas were submitted,” said Anthony Horowitz, the creator of “Foyle’s War,” in a 2002 interview. “They kept winnowing it down, and eventually only three were left. ‘Foyle’s war” was one.” Cancelled after seven seasons by a new team brought in to run ITV, “Foyle,” which had been nominated for a BAFTA award as Best Drama Series in 2004, adamantly refused to die. “There was a huge uproar from both the audience and the critics,” says Jill Green,...
