Can we assume that an adaptation of a book that sold 40 million copies does not require a spoiler-sensitive review? We can? Good. The new Lifetime film of V.C. Andrews's incesterrific novel Flowers in the Attic is a slight improvement over the 1987 version, yet still unsatisfying. This is maddening because it's a rare project that, at a production level, has everything going for it. The fifties set design and costumes are handsome and persuasive, but never so distractingly perfect that the movie turns into a vintage warehouse with actors. The photography, by Miroslav Baszak (Land of the Dead), has an almost tactile richness, with light shafts cutting through the gloom of the cryptlike attic where the Dollanganger children are held captive by their grandmother. Mario Grigorov's score is a resigned lament, mourning the cruelty and suffering you've seen and are about to see; then in tense moments it...

There are many types of films out there in the world. There are movies that make you sing and dance, films that make you cry, films that are over the top and films that are quiet but still powerful in their resonance. Prashant Bhargava’s Patang is an art film in the highest definition that is filled with both exciting scenes, beautiful pictures and quiet moments, where a look or an action literally takes your breathe away. Over six years in the making, the film is a poetic journey into the heart of the old city of Ahmedabad. Patang weaves together the stories of six people transformed by the energy of India’s largest kite festival. Every year a million kites fill the skies above the city: dueling, soaring, tumbling and flying high. When a successful Delhi businessman takes his daughter on a surprise trip back to his childhood home for the festival,...

In this exclusive interview, composer Mario Grigorov provides his reasoning for leaving a career as a touring musician and describes how he fell in love with working on films along the way. His work can currently be seen on screen in the Academy Award nominated independent feature "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire." In between fielding questions about the technical aspects of his job, Grigorov also describes his process as an artist. When it comes to his routine, he says "It's so ironic. Sigh… Seems like the Music Branch of AMPAS is at it again. Did we learn nothing from last year’s mess? Their omissions just gall me. Only 81 scores managed to qualify and move onto the next round of Oscar voting.
Steve Pond of The Wrap:
Eno’s score for “The Lovely Bones,” a haunting and effective use of the composer’s music both new and old, was not submitted to the Academy for consideration. Yeah Yeah Yeah’s frontwoman Karen O’s music for “Where the Wild Things Are,” which she co-wrote with Burwell, and Burnett’s and Stephen Bruton’s score to “Crazy Heart,” both of which have won critics awards, are also not on the branch’s “Reminder List” of qualifying achievements.
Notable scores have been disqualified in the past by the Academy’s music branch, which has strict rules for qualifying in the category. In 2007, for instance,...
