Comic book writer-turned-director Dash Shaw (“My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea”) has conjured the wildest, most surreal animated feature of the year with the 2D “Cryptozoo.” It’s about a group of cryptozookeepers in the late ’60s who create a utopia safe haven for rare, fantastic beasts to protect them from becoming weaponized by the U.S. military. However, the search for the most revered creature — the nightmare-sucking Baku — by cryptid hunter Lauren Grey (Lake Bell) reveals the harmful implications of such an idealistic pursuit.
Shaw, who collaborated with his animator wife Jane Samborski, described “Cryptozoo” as a counter-culture version of “Jurassic Park.”
“When the movie starts, your mind goes to ‘Jurassic Park’ and you’re thinking how it’s going to fail in ‘Cryptozoo,'” Shaw said. “But whereas ‘Jurassic Park’ has a cleaner, allegorical space that’s defined by Spielberg, ‘Cryptozoo’ makes more unusual associations and a collage of different tones.

Mythology and psychedelia come together in a trippy mix in the latest animation from My Entire High School Sinking Into The Sea director Dash Shaw. With its sex and violence this is most certainly not for children, although its Jurassic Park style themes concerning failed Utopias passed through the prism of Sixties politics and activism have a certain childlike simplicity to them and, as such, are likely to prove more endearing to some audiences than others.

The current state of American animated cinema is more than a little disappointing; Pixar, Disney, Dreamworks, and more regurgitate the same formula and offer nothing new but a juxtaposition of cartoon designs and hyper-realistic imagery; animation for adults is all too rare. When something like Dash Shaw and Jane Samborski’s Cryptozoo comes along, it’s easy to recognize as one of the most gorgeous works of American animation in ages.
There is a willingness to experiment with animation and layers that is present from the very first frames of Cryptozoo that makes it immediately captivating. One simply watches two hippies roaming through the forest, engaging in their erotic and philosophical musings, without the realization that something so small and dark and intimate will explode into a psychedelic adventure that asks an important question: can humans and cryptids ever truly co-exist in peace?
As amusing as the notion of potentially...

Brad Furman (“The Infiltrator”) is stepping up to direct his next project, starring Johnny Depp, entitled “Labyrinth.” Before you can conjure up all the ways Depp’s Jareth the Goblin King will pale in comparison to the late, great David Bowie, note the film is not a remake of the 1986 cult fantasy film. This time around the story will follow another musical legend’s twisted death: hip-hop’s Notorious B.I.G. The film centers on a detective, played by Depp, who while investigating the murder of the legendary Brooklyn-based rapper, and related death of Tupac Shakur, is met with pushback from his own department as he uncovers gang ties and possible corruption within his own precinct. Lauren Grey is handling the casting on the project that currently has only Depp on the roster. Production is expected to start mid-November in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Netflix isn’t shying away from...

Comedy Central has greenlighted 10 episodes of “Big Time In Hollywood, Fl,” a comedy about two haphazard brothers trying to make it as filmmakers after being kicked out of their parent’s house. The show is produced by Ben Stiller’s Red Hour and Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and penned by Alex Anfanger and Dan Schimpf. The show’s pilot is being directed and produced by Schimpf, and Anfanger is executive producing with Stiller, Debbie Liebling, Stuart Cornfeld, Mike Rosenstein, Lee Kernis and Brian Stern. “‘Big Time’ combines the directorial style of Hitchcock, the acting prowess of Streep, the budget of ‘House of Payne,’ and the nutritional value of Velveeta,” said Stiller. “I think people’s minds will be blown wide open. For real.” The brothers’ father is played by Backstage’s own Working Actor columnist Stephen Tobolowsky; the family’s matriarch is played by Kathy Baker (“Saving Mr. Banks”). Anfanger—who...

American Idol’s “gentle giant” Jermaine Jones — who, let’s be honest, probably would have been the next person kicked off Idol anyway — has reportedly been disqualified from the show for concealing multiple crimes and outstanding police warrants in 2011. According to THR, “Jones’ departure will pan out in dramatic fashion on Wednesday night’s broadcast.” Ewwwww.
Jones had been brought back into the Idol fold for an “incredible second chance” on February 28 as part of the Top 13 Guys. He had previously been eliminated by the judges on the green mile. At the time, Idol had highly publicized the “extra guy”‘s return,...

There’s talent and then there’s wasting an hour of a two hour broadcast watching that talent faint, forget the lyrics, hit flat notes, and all around fail at reeling in the judges one more time. What could have been nicely packaged in a one hour broadcast stretched out to an hour of focusing on every single competitor hit by the sickness plague and then some before getting to the real goods. It did not help that the first group of the night was a complete mess. Calling themselves something like, Betty & the Boots, only two of the five young ladies in the group managed to continue on in the competition. Unfortunately, this team could not put aside their clashing personalities for the sake of the group or get enough sleep for the sake of their own safety to put on a show stopping performance. We all wanted it...

An "American Idol" contestant impressed the judges with her version of Adele's "One and Only" -- but will she be the only one remaining at the end of the competition?Last night, 22-year-old waitress/singer Lauren Grey auditioned in St. Louis, where the show hoped to find its next Carrie Underwood. Grey's soulful and raspy voice is definitely different than Carrie's, but it still had all three judges wanting to hear more -- so she's going to Hollywood! The song struck a chord with Jennifer Lopez, who said "I didn't need to hear that song right now" -- a reference to her split from Marc Anthony, perhaps?Check out Lauren's performance above. Now that all the audition rounds are over, do you have a favorite going into Hollywood Week? Read more...
