My, how much the race has evolved since the 96th Oscars nominations were announced January 23. We won’t say changed, since it seems like the certain sure bets at that time have become even surer bets. You all know “Oppenheimer,” long considered a frontrunner in many categories,” received the most nominations then with 13, followed by “Poor Things” with 11 and “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10. Well, tonight, this evening of Sunday March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles at 7:00pm Et, we’re finally gonna see if what we all assume to be true is actually going to pan out: That “Oppenheimer” is teed up for a very big night, as IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has predicted, with her final Oscar picks, herself.
“Oppenheimer” has won top honors at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, BAFTAs, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Surely Oscars domination is next, right?...

“Maestro” did well at the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 18 winning two of its three bids. It claimed the prizes for both period/character makeup and special effects races but lost period/character hairstyling to “Barbie,” which was snubbed by the Oscars. Likewise for “Saltburn,” which won both contemporary makeup and hairstyling.
Of this year’s other Oscar nominees, “Poor Things” lost all three of its bids just hours after pulling off an upset at the BAFTAs, “Golda” and “Oppenheimer” were each defeated in a single race while “Society of the Snow” was snubbed by the guild.
These wins boost the odds for “Maestro” to prevail at the Academy Awards. In the decade-long history of these guild honors, there has been just one year when an Muahs winner did not go on to claim the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

The Oscar-frontrunning “Maestro” was the big winner at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (held February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein opus took period/character makeup and special makeup effects. This puts “Maestro” in the Oscar driver’s seat (led by two-time winner Kazu Hiro) against “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Golda,” and “Society of the Snow.”
Two non-Oscar competitors, “Saltburn”and “Barbie,” split the other wins: Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller grabbed both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster snagged period/character hairstyling.
TV winners, meanwhile, were divided among “The Idol” (contemporary makeup), “The Crown” (period/character makeup), “The Last of Us” (special makeup effects), “The Morning Show” (contemporary hairstyling), and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” (period/character hairstyling).

Barbie led all films with eight wins at the Astra Film Awards on Saturday night, but the biggest winner of all may have been the Hca — an organization of “critics, entertainment journalists, content creators, industry insiders and creatives” formerly known as the Hollywood Critics Association and recently rebranded as the Hollywood Creative Alliance — which appears to have weathered external criticisms and internal dissension, given the sizable talent turnout at its flagship event.

Sian Grigg has been Leonardo DiCaprio’s personal makeup artist since “Titanic” (1997). It’s a gig that’s afforded her the opportunity to work with such legendary filmmakers as Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Danny Boyle, Clint Eastwood, Christopher Nolan, and now, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. “The Revenant” was such a massive undertaking that she enlisted the help of Duncan Jarman, a prosthetics artist who had worked with her on “The Aviator” (2004), “Body of Lies” (2008), and “J. Edgar” (2011), amongst others. In separate video chats (Grigg above; Jarman below), the two spoke extensively about their work on the film, which has earned them both their first Oscar nomination. -Break- Subscribe to Gold Derby Breaking News Alerts & Experts’ Latest Oscar Predictions “The whole film was a huge challenge,” admits Grigg. “I read the script and I thought, &...

The journey to hell and back for Leonardo DiCaprio's Hugh Glass in "The Revenant" began with harrowing makeup and hair. It ended with an immersive soundscape that helped convey his symbolic death and rebirth. (Watch a featurette on DiCaprio's makeup above.) "I couldn't believe this was happening to one character — it was epic," recalled Sian Grigg, DiCaprio's makeup artist for 20 years. And the way Alejandro shot it [with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki], made it even harder than normal because it was in one continuous shot. There were few opportunities for closeups for bleeding or the stitching of the wounds." Read More: "Why Iñárritu's 'The Revenant' Will Likely Win Best Picture" So Grigg had to prepare all of the wounds for each take and they had to keep working throughout, especially during the intense grizzly bear attack, which was filmed for about a week in the rain. Leave it to the Brits! The BAFTA nominations were announced and they gave us a slightly different look at the awards season! For instance, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," the leading Oscar contender in the U.S. just received 3 noms including Best Film, Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Original Screenplay. No Director nomination for McCarthy.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," a handsomely-produced period piece led the pack along with Todd Haynes' "Carol," another handsomely-produced period piece. Both films garnered nine nominations each including Best Picture. "Bridge of Spies" and "Carol" will duke it out with "Spotlight," Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's "The Revenant" (eight nominations), and Adam McKay's "The Big Short" (five nominations) for the Best Picture trophy.
So where's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" you ask? They're relegated to the technical categories. Apparently, sequels, no matter how great they are, can't compete with originals.

It may have only received five nominations, but they were all major nods: Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (Christian Bale), and Best Editing. Many of the technical categories at the Academy Awards have several rounds of voting before the final nominees are determined. One of these so-called "bake-offs" is the Makeup race. View Gallery The seven films in contention for three slots are: "Albert Nobbs" "The Artist" "Anonymous" "Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life" "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" "Hugo" "The Iron Lady" The most noticeable snub was to BAFTA winner Sian Grigg ("The Aviator") and her team for the makeup in "J. The headline is a bit of an exaggeration as I'm not particularly upset J. Edgar leads my Best Makeup predictions. It's simply the lack of logic when it comes to making the prediction. When I wrote about the makeup category last week I used The Curious Case of Benjamin Button winning over Hellboy II: The Golden Army as an example of the lack in logic used by the Academy when deciding on a winner that year. My primary reason was the amount of digital effects used to age and de-age Brad Pitt in the lead role on top of the ghastly makeup used on Cate Blanchett to make her look older in the film, makeup that looks eerily similar to the plastic job done on Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar. In the comments some people took me to task, mentioning Greg Cannom's work in the film, which I will admit,...

Much like Matt Damon in The Informant or Renee Zellweger in Bridget Jones’ Diary, Leonardo DiCaprio was a consummate actor on the set of the upcoming J. Edgar. Or should we say Leo was a consuming actor, as according to the film’s screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, the actor packed on the lbs while portraying the infamous head of FBI. “Some of those pounds on later Hoover were not prosthetic. I’ll say it. Leo got a little fat,” Black revealed in DiCaprio’s New York Times profile, citing German chocolate cupcakes as Leo’s kryptonite. Look, the man works method! Leo probably read some obscure interview in which J. Edgar Hoover confessed an uncontrollable love of baked goods and he had to go for it. It’s all for his art!
