Don't let the title fool you: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" isn't the only one of her kind. The "Slayer" line goes back millennia, and when one falls, another young girl is called on by destiny. In the season 1 finale, "Prophecy Girl," Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) briefly dies but is revived. The writers took advantage of that technicality in season 2 to introduce another slayer, Kendra (Bianca Lawson) — but she met a swift end.
Enter Faith Lehane (no relation to Dennis) in season 3, played by Eliza Dushku and sharing her actress' Boston origins. Her name is a virtue, but Faith is a rebel — so much so, she bounces from ally to enemy and then back again. In an interview with "Buffy" writers and producers, they discussed how, from the beginning, Faith was meant to be a "psycho" Slayer who would be a foil for Buffy. Marti Noxon called her Buffy's "shadow self,...

Historically, horror movies have tended to have lower budgets than films in other genres. A large part of this is probably due to the origins of the genre. Slasher films become something of a cultural phenomenon in the 1970s, when movies like "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" and "Halloween" in many ways revolutionized the film industry. Such films were usually made on the cheap and relied on clever practical effects and location shooting to deliver the onscreen goods. But what really made these films so influential is that from these modest origins, they killed at the box office, revolutionizing the genre as we know it today.
Since the 1970s, movies of all genres have gotten more expensive to make, and not all of these films can earn back their production costs. While horror has remained an extremely popular genre both in the States and worldwide, scary movies are just as...

For the average theatergoer, going to a production of a William Shakespeare play can either be an enlightening night of poetic culture or it can feel like homework. The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles’ production of Henry IV, helmed by Tony Award-winning Daniel Sullivan, lands somewhere in the middle of that spectrum, but leans towards enlightening and fun, thanks to its impressive cast of star power that is fronted by Academy Award-winning Tom Hanks, Scandal‘s Joe Morton, and Legion actor Hamish Linklater.
Henry IV, Shakespeare’s two-part play that makes for a three hour-plus theater experience at the Japanese Garden on the V.A. campus, can be considered a frenemy bromance between Linklater’s Hal and Hanks’ Falstaff, the latter being a character that appears multiple times in the Shakespeare-iverse. Hal is the son of the titular king, played with an appropriate patriarchial authority by Morton.

Supporters of the Shakespeare Center of La for 25 years and counting, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson were looking forward to performing opposite each other in Dan Sullivan’s production of “Henry IV,” Wilson shared with Variety at the opening night celebration of the play on Saturday.
But prior to rehearsals starting, which artistic director Ben Donenberg relayed were six days a week for eight hours a day for five weeks, Wilson had to bow out of the role of Mistress Quickly.
“I had another project, an independent, that I was attached to. Financing was good and fell out, good and fell out, until finally financing happened but only in a very specific timeframe. Because that project predated the play, I felt obligated to keep my word,” Wilson explained.

And thus, a new era began.
Buffy Season Four is a controversial Season amongst fans. To put it simply – it’s not the favourite for many. This was a bit of an interesting year for the show – for one thing, it lost two of its principle cast members to a newly launched spin-off, the familiar high school location was no more and the characters were officially adults. Times were moving on for Buffy, and the things that we had gotten used to were going to have to change.
Thus, the show moved onto the life of a Slayer at College, and the adventures that ensued. Adventures that are a little, well, daft at times. Don’t get me wrong – Season Four is by no means a failure, and does hit some serious heights on occasion. If anything, it lacks the consistency of Season Three and the brilliance of Season Two.

Jason from Mnpp here - I think we can get away with some more Buffy love this week, right? It's 20th anniversary might have been a whole several days ago but seeing as how we made it to 20 years and the internet still cared, and cared deeply (I can't be alone in having had my timeline entirely flooded with Sunnydale Fever), what's a few days?
Thing is we have devoted more "Beauty vs Beast" competitions to the show than any other single piece of entertainment - we've already asked you to choose between Spike & Angel and then also to choose between Faith & Buffy herself. But if there's one thing the Buffyverse isn't lacking - besides quips, chokers, and Xander Harris in a speedo - it's an endless supply of loveable mooks from which to love. So I went with my two favorite villains - Mayor Wilkins (Harry Groener) from Season...

The source is an ex-board member, Pembroke (Harry Groener), who recently went Awol at a “wellness” retreat in the Swiss Alps. Lockhart is tasked with going there and bringing Pembroke home, so the board can pin the illegal activity on him.
But when Lockhart reaches the retreat, he struggles to find answers – or, indeed, Pembroke. He tries to depart, but a car accident leaves him with a broken leg. He’s stuck in the old castle, with its secret history, its “vitamin”-quaffing patients, and its menacing overlord, Dr. Volmer (Jason Isaacs). Lockhart meets Hannah (Mia Goth), a...

Chicago – Gore Verbinski is no stranger to the spooky. He always creates these tense, terror-filled scenes that effectively frighten us. His films, from “Ring” to “Rango”, each are compelling enough to keep our attention, not matter how absurd they transform into. Boy, does he ever deliver in the gorgeously grotesque “A Cure for Wellness.”
Rating: 3.0/5.0
I grew up in what can easily be considered the golden era of fucked up cartoons. My formative years were filled with outrageous, absurdist shows like “Ren & Stimpy,” “Rocko’s Modern Life,” “Aaahh!!! Real Monsters,” and “Courage the Cowardly Dog.“ Each of them probably has something to do with my macabre sensibilities and Gore Verbinski perfectly mirrors my own predilections. The most powerful part of any Verbinski is the visual storytelling and “A Cure for Wellness” proves that he works best when the camera tells the story for him. The best way to describe his...

Normally in the early months of a given year, the mainstream wide releases leave a ton to be desired. Sure, there are decent enough ones if you look hard enough, but they’re usually safe genre outings, with more often than not the quality movies being independent releases. Ambition and ambitious filmmakers are in short supply. As such, even though A Cure for Wellness is only sporadically successful, the effort and uniqueness being put forth is worthy of commendation. Filmmaker Gore Verbinski goes all out in this hybrid body horror/mystery/thriller, leaving no odd stone unturned. I didn’t especially like it, but I’m oddly glad that it exists and that I saw it. Opening this week, it might just be a cult classic in the making. The plot is fairly hard to follow, unnecessarily so, even if it starts out rather simple. It follows an ambitious, overworked,...

There is a level of audacity to Gore Verbinski’s A Cure for Wellness that I can’t help but admire. On paper, it’s not the type of film that generally gets a big studio push in this day and age, but yet, 20th Century Fox is going all out for Verbinski’s weirdly surreal exploration of the one thing none of us can escape—our mortality—and I dig that he once again takes an avant-garde route to give us a grandiose, epic gothic horror movie that wears its influences on its sleeves, yet at times feels like nothing we’ve ever experienced before.
If you distill Cure down to its basic elements, though, it’d be safe to say it feels like if Hammer Films did their own version of Shutter Island, but really, that only accounts for about 30% of what Verbinski achieves here. The bottom line is,...

Mortality. A constant unknown that plagues the human condition. We try to delay its effects, but no matter what – someday – the Grim Reaper will coming knocking. Sorry to start off on such a dark note, but these thoughts directly provoke Gore Verbinski’s cold-open for A Cure For Wellness. The director urges viewers towards personal fulfillment, breaking the shackles of our work-until-death mentalities. Do you want to be the guy who croaks at his desk just to earn one more Employee Of The Month award? Thus is the introduction of Verbinski’s cult-noir mystery with Lovecraftian appeal, wholly committed to resurrecting a cinematic weirdness that has escaped mainstream cinema for far too long.
On a serious note – who greenlit this picture, and how did Verbinski pitch such a strange big-budget puzzler? You just don’t see ambitious mindf&#kery like this being given studio priority anymore. Everything starts with a very Shutter Island vibe,...

'Bread and Butter' movie: Christine Weatherup and Bobby Moynihan. 'Bread and Butter' movie review: Late life virginity and other social anxieties in a funny and awkwardly romantic comedy The first insight of debuting feature film director Liz Manashil is that romantic comedies should actually be funny first and romantic second – if ever. Her film Bread and Butter eventually works its way to a kind of awkward romanticism, but it's always dryly funny; its silliness deftly masked by all manner of understatement and managed execution. The second insight of the screenwriter-director was to populate her funny romance with the kind of people you almost never see in romantic comedies; which is to say people who look like people you might know, who have friends you might have, and who deal with issues less explored and probably more common than we tend to talk about, including social and other anxieties, as well as late life virginity.

Joss Whedon, lauded king of fandom, purveyor of wisdom and de facto overseer of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, celebrates his 50th birthday on Monday (June 23).
Whedon's always had a knack for taking pre-established characters – whether it's The Avengers or a gang of talking toys or the cast of Speed – and making them just that bit more quippy and emotionally rich and awesome. But it's his original small-screen characters that remain his most beloved.
Below, Digital Spy counts down our top fifteen Whedonverse characters. You can vote for your favourite in the poll below, then take to the comments to rank about all the rankings we got wrong and all the favourites we've inevitably left out.
15. Dr Horrible
Neil Patrick Harris's "aspiring supervillain" is never at any point successfully villainous. He's a more immediately loveable extension of Buffy's Nerd Troika – the perpetually overlooked semi-recluse who can barely string a sentence together around his crush,...

There's a wind of change in the air. And I'm not talking about my adverse reaction to a new brand of curry that I sampled for lunch.
Nope. Down in Sunnydale, Buffy and her friends are on the cusp of leaving school and moving on to pastures new. While Xander's contemplating a bohemian life on the road, Buffy and Willow are about to embark on that next stepping stone to a good job. The question is, where do they go to university? We've fortunately missed out on the university interviews, which, if my experience is anything to go by, consists of spotty, patronising boffins firing sneering questions so tricky that even Paxo would be silenced into submission. Evidently, Willow has had an easier press, given that she's drowning in acceptances from Harvard to Oxford – Buffy, on the other hand, has to consider her future, given that her calling as the...

DVD special features. Ain't they great? Packed full of fun facts about the making of your favourite TV programme or movie, they're designed to add great value for money to our favourite shiny discs.
The problem is though, they're the equivalent of Toto pulling back the curtain on a huffing and puffing Wizard of Oz who's doing his level best to convince a motley crew of visitors that he's some awe-inspiring green overlord head of doom rather than a chubby bloke pressing down lots of pipes. The illusion's gone – much like the DVD special features which show the mundane process behind the end product. Look, there's a sweaty cameraman zooming in on the hero of the hour! Look, there's take number 39, with cast members pulling the face of a man chomping down on a wasp sandwich. Value for money is all well and good, but DVD extras are essentially the...

I've been humming and hawwing about how to approach the next couple of episodes for the third series of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The issue that I sometimes encounter is that although some episodes aren't advertised as two or even three part stories, they still can be viewed as such. Bad Girls and Consequences are two such episodes that form a loose two-parter, and since they revolve around the same plot points and themes, I guessed it would make more sense to tackle these as one big review rather than two in which I repeat myself a lot.
Mind you, I've noticed that I've repeated myself in the past more times than I care to remember. How many times have I mentioned Dragon's Den or The Apprentice, for example?
Anyway, back to Buffyland. Bad Girls/Consequences marks the turning point of the third season with regards to the ongoing season arc.

In a few weeks, the final season of How I Met Your Mother will be underway and the most long-winded romance of the last ten years will come to a close when Ted Mosby reveals to his children just how he came to meet the one they call mum. Putting aside the small fact that there is something just a bit weird about your dad sitting you down to recount the nine-year tale of all the women he ever slept with (this was acknowledged in the very funny promo for season nine), How I Met Your Mother has grown from some humble beginnings to one of America’s leading, mainstream sitcoms. As a Friends-style sitcom, it isn’t the sort of...

It’s been 10 years since Buffy and the Scooby Gang defeated The First, leaving Sunnydale nothing but an imploded crater. Buffy the Vampire Slayer — Joss Whedon’s cult series about the slayer and her ragtag team of friends — aired its final episode on May 20, 2003. In honor of this anniversary, here are 10 reasons why Buffy kicks ass.
10. The Killer Wardrobe
Buffy Summers (Sarah Michele Gellar) knows how to stake vamps in style. From her midriff-baring tops to her platform heels, her late ’90s and early aughts’ wardrobe always adds flair to her night job.

Green’s character Daryl Lacoutre considered Lily (Hannigan) and Marshall (Jason Segel) his best friends in college. However, they barely remember the guy. We, like many of you, are ultra curious as to just how the new stage version of the classic William Peter Blatty tale The Exorcist will play out in a live theatre setting. One thing's for sure: Star Emily Yetter has already piqued our curiosity.

Jim Wilhelm is glad he's not an actor anymore. A principal talent agent with the New York City–based Douglas, Gorman, Rothacker & Wilhelm Inc., he loved acting and fondly recalls performing in community theater as a young man. Indeed, Wilhelm is still a proud member of Actors' Equity Association, having earned his union card at Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera. But he never pursued a stage career because of debilitating audition anxiety. "Still, I wanted to work in the theater and be good at what I did," he says.To judge by his roster of clients, Wilhelm has scored. The actors he has repped include Hollywood legend Olivia de Havilland, Lainie Kazan, Stephanie Zimbalist, Sharon Gless, Lea Salonga, Alice Ripley, Elaine Paige, Harry Groener, Kathleen Chalfant, John Rubinstein, Douglas Sills, and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Choosing talent is always tricky, but Wilhelm is a strong believer in trusting his instincts, regardless of changing.

A classic filler episode, this week feels like Sam’s direct response to Dean’s Amy Pond betrayal earlier this season. So, without further ado…
Open with a man sitting in his apartment. Judging by the place, it seems he is a well-off banker-type guy. Suddenly an unseen assailant pops open the door and walks in with a knife.
And before we can say “look out!” he is thrown all over the place. His hands and feet are hacked off while he’s still alive, and a symbol is carved into his chest. No surprise, but the man bleeds to death.
In the Impala, Dean catches his forty-winks while Sam drives to the scene of crime. Suddenly he wakes up and takes a swig from Bobby’s flask, justifying it to his brother as grief therapy. He is just honoring the guy. So down is Dean that he claims that...

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 7, Episode 13 of The CW's "Supernatural," entitled "The Slice Girls."
I'm of two minds about this week's "Supernatural," which made the somewhat questionable decision to revisit the basic theme of one of this season's most divisive episodes, "The Girl Next Door." In that hour, Dean was forced to kill Amy, one of Sam's childhood friends (or a girl that he'd known for a matter of hours, depending on how you chose to look at it) because she was a "monster" who had killed humans -- deserving or not -- and would likely do so again. In this hour, the roles were reversed, and Sam was forced to kill Emma, a girl who was genetically Dean's daughter, but also a girl he'd known for less than a matter of hours.
As some of you may recall, "The Girl Next Door" sparked...
