Poor Things, Oppenheimer and Saltburn won Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) Awards in the categories for fantasy, period and contemporary live action features, respectively, at the 28th Adg Awards, which were handed out Saturday at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood.
Poor Things and Oppenheimer are additionally nominated for the Oscar in production design, alongside Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon, which were also Adg nominated in their respective categories.
Over the past five years, the winner of the Adg’s period film prize has gone on to win the Oscar for production design twice: In 2020, for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and in 2021, for Mank. During that time, the production design Oscar went to the winner of the fantasy category twice, in 2019, for Black Panther, and 2022, for Dune. Production design Oscar nominees “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer,” “Napoleon” all competed for the 28th Art Directors Guild Awards February 10 at Ovation Hollywood’s Ray Dolby Ballroom. “Poor Things” prevailed over “Barbie” for fantasy, and is now in the driver’s seat to win the Oscar. Throughout the season, it has been a race between these two big feminist films constructed around rebirth and unconventional world-building.
Meanwhile, “Oppenheimer” took period honors over “Asteroid City,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Napoleon.” Contemporary winner “Saltburn,” though, is not in the Oscar running. The animated feature winner was “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
The TV winners for one-hour period, fantasy, and contemporary were “The Great,” “The Last of Us,” and “Succession.” Movie or limited series went to “Beef,” and the half-hour series winner was “Reservation Dogs.”

“Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” were among the winners at the 28th Annual Art Director’s Guild Awards which took place in Hollywood on Saturday evening.
Hosted by Max Greenfield, the Adg Awards celebrated outstanding production design in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, animated features and music videos.
“Poor Things” production designers Shona Heath and James Price drew visual references ranging from the paintings of French futurist Albert Robida to Francis Ford Coppola’s “Dracula” to build Yorgos Lanthimos’ extraordinary sets.
In “Oppenheimer,” Ruth De Jong built Los Alamos from the ground up. But her most challenging task came when she had to build the Oval Office for the film’s third act. Working with supervising art director, Samantha Englander, the two had floated the idea of finding a pre-existing build of the Oval Office. They looked no further than HBO’s beloved political satire “Veep.” Not only was “Veep...

Bill Groom has provided sumptuous, period-accurate sets for the entire run of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” but the final season of the Amazon comedy required the designer to go big with his designs. He is once again nominated in the Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program (One Hour or More) category for the episode “Susan.” This installment required the creation of several extravagant theatrical sets. “It was probably the largest amount of work we did all season,” offers Groom. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
A core location in “Susan” is a business expo which houses several industrial musicals. Not only did each set have to contain the requisite amount of detail and flair that “Maisel” has been synonymous for in its design, but they also had to house original musical numbers. Multiple heavyweight series return this spring, which will have a big impact on the 2023 Emmy craft races, particularly with the final seasons of “Succession,” “Barry,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Star Trek: Picard,” and possibly “Ted Lasso.” Plus, “The Mandalorian” is back and should continue its craft domination, while there are opportunities for improvement for new seasons of “Yellowjackets,” “The Great,” “Schmigadoon!,” and “Perry Mason.”
Before looking ahead at potential opportunities, it’s worth noting past Emmy performances.
“The Mandalorian” has set a new standard of excellence as the “Star Wars” crown jewel of Disney+. Alex Borstein is known to fans of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for her hilarious portrayal of agent Susie Myerson, and to viewers of “Family Guy” for providing the voice of Lois Griffin for more than two decades.

Amazon is deepening its relationship with Alex Borstein.
In fact, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star is readying her first Amazon Original comedy special, which she’s titled Alex Borstein: Corsets & Clown Suits. It’s slated to hit on April 18th, four days after Maisel debuts its fifth and final season on the service. Fittingly, it was filmed at The Wolford Theatre, the fictional burlesque club from Maisel‘s fourth season, and relied on the award-winning crafts team from the show.
The special, which comes as Borstein and her co-stars embark on another crowded awards season, is being billed as the three-time Emmy winner’s “deeply personal and wildly fictitious account of one woman’s attempt to f*** with perception.” Equal parts provocative and whimsical, the self-penned performance will include assists from Borstein’s muse and maestro, Barcelona-native musicians, Eric Mills and Salva Rey. It is the first special from the former Mad TV star.

Alex Borstein has played the no-nonsense Susie Myerson on Amazon Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” to much acclaim and to two Emmy victories. Season 4 allowed the actress to play with higher stakes than ever, as the character reached for new career highs while dealing with emotional lows. This juggling act, plus a killer monologue, could help the celebrated performer take home another Emmy.
Borstein has won three Emmy Awards from eight total nominations. She scored her first nomination as a co-producer of “Family Guy” when the series was up for Outstanding Animated Program in 2008. She then earned three bids for voicing “Family Guy” matriarch Lois Griffin, winning in 2018. That year also marked the actress’ first Best Comedy Supporting Actress nomination and win for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” She would win a consecutive trophy for “Maisel” in 2019, with additional nominations in 2020 and 2022.

It’s been four years since Rachel Brosnahan won an Emmy Award for playing foul-mouthed comic Midge on Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Season 4 of the hit comedy brings the actress back into the Emmy race yet again. A poignant comedy act in a burlesque house and some tough love at Carnegie Hall might be enough to bring Brosnahan back to the winners circle.
Brosnahan scored her first Emmy nomination in 2015 for her guest role on “House of Cards.” She won the Best Comedy Actress prize in 2018 for the first season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and has picked up three nominations for every season of “Mrs. Maisel” since.

“It’s story and daydreaming,” says “Severance” production designer Jeremy Hindle about his favorite part of the creative process. “Literally daydream everything that you could possibly daydream first without any budget or any other conversation. “The biggest challenge for season four, I think, was dealing with the limitations that were set by Covid in New York,” says “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” production designer Bill Groom, who earned an Emmy nomination this year for Best Production Design for a Period or Fantasy Program for the episodes “Maisel vs. Lennon: The Cut Contest” and “How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall.” So how do you adapt when you don’t have access to the locations you would normally use? “The Gilded Age” production designer Bob Shaw didn’t want to go overboard as he gave the grand home of Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) a “lived-in” feeling. He hung portraits on top of one another and used patterns on the wallpaper, the curtains and the chairs — all of this to show old money. “The layering is what gave that sense that they had lived there for 20 years,” says Shaw.

Netflix’s horror phenomenon,”Stranger Things,” topped all craft categories Tuesday with 12 nominations, riding the strength of Season 4’s popular Vecna monster story line — and becoming the streamer’s most viewed English-language series. However, right behind was HBO’s acclaimed gritty teen drama, “Euphoria,” which grabbed 11 nominations for its breakthrough Season 2, after collecting only two craft wins out of seven nominations for Season 1 and two subsequent special episodes.
Meanwhile, grabbing nine nominations apiece were “The White Lotus” satirical anthology series (HBO) and “Only Murders in the Building” comedy series (Hulu); Getting eight was “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (Amazon Prime Video), while the critically-acclaimed “Severance” sci-fi thriller (Apple TV+) shared seven along with the surprisingly strong “Moon Knight” (Marvel/Disney+), “Ted Lasso” (Apple TV+), “Barry” (HBO), and “Hacks” (HBO Max).

“We all, as designers, pull from our own experiences, not just research on characters and research on the periods and all of that, but also your own emotional connection to the environment,” reveals production designer Bill Groom about the Emmy-winning hit comedy “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” “We base an awful lot of our work on research, but mostly it’s based on, I would say at least for me, story and character,” he proclaims, adding for our recent Q&a, “the research is important, but the research can never really overshadow story and characters.” We talked with Groom as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2022 Emmy Awards contenders. Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Amazon, for this edition we look at how production designer Bill Groom, costume designer Donna Zakowska, and director of photography M. David Mullen created the exquisite period detail of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
As Season 4 of the Amazon series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” opens, stand-up comedian Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) finds herself at a crossroads. Fired from her job on tour with singer Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain), Midge decides the time has come to be uncompromising in her career, and she finds a surprising outlet for the creative freedom that she craves: a bawdy strip club where Midge performs between acts, slowly attracting a female audience that is a source of both added income and new frustrations for the club’s owner.

After a lengthy hiatus from the small screen, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” returned for a fourth season, giving Emmy voters more content to digest.
This time around, Midge, played by Rachel Brosnahan, takes on a career change and winds up working at a Manhattan burlesque club, the Wolford. Says production designer Bill Groom, “Had it not been for Covid, we would have used an old Broadway theater.”
Instead, he had to build the club from the ground up at Brooklyn’s Steiner Studios.
His idea was that the Wolford would be an old vaudeville theater. “At some point, perhaps in the 1940s, it was converted into a strip club and a burlesque theater,” says Groom. “It had two levels: a vaudeville level that was built probably in the early 1900s, and then the second level was added during a renovation, probably in the 1940s.”
Red and gold were commonly used for theaters in that era.

You might recall the success of last year’s “Maisel Day,” a one-day event in Los Angeles put on by Amazon Prime Video as part of their FYC campaign for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” You could get sandwiches, cupcakes, even a hotel room for the price they were in 1959. Suffice it to say it was a massive success — it isn’t a party unless the cops get called — and set the bar high for this year’s Emmy campaign.
Unfortunately, like most of 2020, the global pandemic put a monkey wrench into everything, including the Emmy plans for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” which is up for a whopping 20 Primetime Emmy Awards. But like Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) herself, they’re adapting and working with what they got. This year’s Emmys campaign seeks to remind you just what makes “Mrs. Maisel” so marvelous — virtually.

In its eight-episode third season, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel hit the road, requiring production designer Bill Groom to design sets for such disparate locations as Las Vegas, Providence, Oklahoma and Miami.
While the Amazon series had traveled to Paris and the Catskills in Season 2, its latest season on the road called for perhaps a greater diversity of builds than ever before.
Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, the comedy centers on Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan), a housewife in the 1960s whose life takes a remarkable turn, when she decides to become a stand-up comic. In Season 3, released last December, Midge seizes upon the greatest opportunity she’s yet received in her burgeoning career, when she’s invited on tour with pop sensation Shy Baldwin (LeRoy McClain).
For four-time Emmy winner Groom, one of the inherent challenges of designing Maisel has to do with the evolution of Midge’s career, in her speedy ascent to stardom.

Production designer Bill Groom, who has worked on everything from films like “A League of Their Own” and “Milk” to such TV series as “Vinyl” and Boardwalk Empire” is drawn to projects set in the past. “I love period work. It’s fun, it’s exciting, there’s always a lot to learn and I enjoy that part of the process.“
For Season 3 of Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s” set on the brink of the ’60s, Emmy-winning costume designer Donna Zakowska told Gold Derby previously that there were more than 9,000 extras this time out to outfit. Everything is bigger in the nostalgic comedy created by Amy Sherman- Palladino and Dan Palladino that has garnered a record 16 Emmys, 8 for each season so far. Was that true in Groom’s case when it came to sets?

As terrific as the actors are on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” — and face it, the cast is the beluga caviar of ensembles — the below-the-line contributions to the Amazon Prime fave are far from chopped liver, too. As co-creator Amy Sherman-Palladino told Gold Derby in an interview, “It’s a tragically expensive show. I’m surprised they let us into the building.”
But the premiere episode of Season 3, which was directed and written by Sherman-Palladino, probably came closest to breaking the bank. That’s because Rachel Brosnahan‘s stand-up comic Midge is moving up the showbiz ladder of success after being hired as an opening act for a Johnny Mathis-like smooth crooner Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain) for his six-month tour.
However, as a kind of a warm-up for their long road trip, Midge and Shy first perform at a Uso show before hundreds of male extras dressed in khaki green...

Oscar nominees “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite” were the big winners Saturday night at the 24th annual Art Directors Guild Awards (held at The InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown). Barbara Ling’s elegiac recreation of 1969 Hollywood beat Dennis Gassner’s innovative period work on Sam Mendes’ one-shot, World War I extravaganza “1917” for the period prize, while Lee Ha Jun’s extraordinary production design on Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” took contemporary honors. The wins for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite” suggest they are not out of the running for the Production Design Oscar.
Oscar ballots are in voters hands, due Tuesday, February 4.
Meanwhile, “Avengers: Endgame” and “Toy Story 4 ” earned Adg awards for fantasy and animation.
Ling performed a 50-year facelift on Hollywood Blvd. and Westwood Village. The restoration included such bygone cultural fixtures as the Pussycat Theater, the psychedelic Aquarius Theatre (which opened “Hair” in 1968), and Peaches Records & Tapes.

“The Irishman,” “Ford v Ferrari,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “1917” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” on Monday all nabbed nominations for the Art Directors Guild Awards’ period-film category, the Adg category that most closely corresponds to the Academy Award for Best Production Design.
In the Adg fantasy-film category, which typically supplies one or two Oscar nominees, the guild singled out “Ad Astra,” “Aladdin,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Dumbo,” “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”
Both of those categories were expanded from five to six nominees because of ties.

Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) isn’t the only character on a quest to reinvent herself in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” At the start of Season 2, while Midge continues her rise to stand-up stardom, her mother, Rose (Marin Hinkle), impulsively returns to Paris to relive the bohemian life she left behind after college. Bored with being a wife and mother, Rose longs for her own adventure full of art and romance, which inspired production designer Bill Groom and costume designer Donna Zakowska during a refreshing break from New York.
“It was important to get a sense of why she’s in Paris,” said Groom. “We don’t want to see monuments in every shot — this is not like a postcard. “When I was a college student in Oklahoma, my English teacher was talking about how Paris was such an artistic place…how art was in the air. That’s basically true, and...

"I told my wife I’ve felt like the middle of the afternoon was my magic hour, and she said, 'Just before your nap?'" production designer Bill Groom joked with The Hollywood Reporter in the latest episode of Magic Hour.
"It's a very creative time of the day. That's when the questions really come up: choices of fabrics and paint colors, and how that's all going to work with the next set and what those colors are."

The Art Directors Guild Production Design Awards spread the wealth throughout 11 categories of film, television, commercials, music videos, and animated features. Feature film winners included period “The Favourite” (Fiona Crombie), fantasy “Black Panther” (Hannah Beachler), contemporary “Crazy Rich Asians” (Nelson Coates), and animated “Isle of Dogs”.
Anyone looking for clarity on the upcoming Academy Awards won’t get it here. Beachler, the Oscar favorite, for her brilliant world building of Wakanda, has already become the first African-American to be Oscar-nominated in her craft. A victory, though, would solidify the diversity breakthrough for production design.
Meanwhile, a win for Crombie would signify a stunning creative achievement. She transformed the palace (shot at Hatfield House) into a playground and battlefield with a lot of open spaces. The wood paneling and tapestries helped the pale-skinned actresses stand out more, especially with Sandy Powell’s Oscar-nominated monochrome costumes.
