Massimo Morante — the guitarist whose moody, funky playing helped define Italian prog-rock group Goblin’s eerie soundtracks for horror cinema classics such as Suspiria and Dawn of the Dead — has died at the age of 69. The group confirmed the news “with a heavy heart” in a Facebook post.
His daughter, Valerie paid respects to her father and announced the funeral would take place this weekend in Rome. “It is with indescribable pain, a pain that trumps words, that breaks the breath and hammer the heart, that I announce the death of my father,...

If you've ever seen a horror movie with a score composed by Goblin, then you know the band's music is just as much a character as anyone on screen. You might have seen your birthday party reflected in their gleaming surfaces once upon a time. As they sang, their glazed eyes may have caught your own lively ones, and perhaps you noticed a little life in the pupils of the animatronic animal on stage. In the Five Nights at Freddy's video game, those robotic performers walk and kill at night, and Warner Bros. has taken notice of this creepy premise, as they have acquired the adaptation rights to the popular survival horror game. In our latest round-up, we also take a look at the release information for Arrow Video's Blu-ray / DVD of 1980's Contamination.
Five Nights at Freddy's: The Hollywood Reporter reveals that a Five Nights at Freddy's feature film adaptation is in development at Warner Bros.
Vertigo Entertainment's Roy Lee and KatzSmith Productions' Seth Grahame-Smith (author of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) and David Katzenberg will produce the movie.

And now it’s gets serious. Round 4 of Hitfix’s March Mayhem, the Second Annual Tournament of Heroes versus Villains kicks off this morning and the field is reeling from some stupendous upsets in Round 3, as some seemingly unstoppable titans continue their march towards destiny. The defending champion, Xena, Warrior Princess advances to the next round after easily besting poor little Arya Stark. The defeat marks the end of Game of Thrones’ dream of dominance in this tournament. Across the board, Arya’s tormenter Cersei Lannister also fell to the might of Tony Soprano. Xena will go on to face Oliver Queen for the title of the TV Heroes division. Queen scored a stunning upset, having defeated Walking Dead’s Rick Grimes. Grimes had been the top vote getter in an earlier round, but Walking Dead fans stopped to rest just a moment too long. Up in the Movie Heroes division,...

In addition to being depicted in black and white on the paneled page, the comic book version of The Walking Dead’s Rick Grimes has some other key differences in appearance compared to his TV counterpart (though there are plenty of similarities, too), all of which are captured in Diamond Select Toys' new Rick Grimes vinyl bust bank that comes out this summer. Also due out when flowers are in full bloom and snow is a distant memory are four new Universal Monsters action figures, a zombified Sabretooth from the Marvel Zombies comic book series, a Godzilla vinyl bank mirroring the radioactive reptile's look in 1974's Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, and the return of the popular Plants Vs. When the Sony Pictures Imageworks special-effects team got the screenplay for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, they quickly realized that with great box-office comes even greater responsibility for technical wizardry. The scope of the sequel was much bigger than Marc Webb’s 2012 reboot, and in contrast to the numerous night action sequences that dominated the first film, the new movie would extensively showcase Spider-Man slinging through New York in broad daylight, an entirely new set of creative challenges. “For some of the shots of Spider-Man swinging through the city , the computer could take 40 hours to render one frame of the city of New York,...

It’s pretty much impossible to leave a film set in the Marvel universe without having something to talk about, whether it’s a notable character, a plot development, or a storyline that you really enjoyed. Mostly, though, when you leave a superhero film, your focus isn’t on the present — it’s on the future. We want to know where this franchise is going. We want to know now. Thus, we speculate. And speculate and speculate and speculate…and sometimes we dissect just enough to keep us busy until more detailed intel comes out.

Giallo films have been a part of our beloved genre’s landscape for decades now and it’s safe to say that one of the reasons these films have endured is due to their remarkable musical scores. Italian progressive rock band Goblin, who worked on such classics as Dario Argento’s Suspiria, Deep Red, Profondo Russo, Tenebre, and George A. Photo: Alvino Italy's hardcore hellektro-house duo Mr. K and Splattaboy first emerged from the extreme metal scene – a transition they share with several horror-styling dance music artists, including Fearnet fave Drop Goblin – before eventually finding their current calling as purveyors of Satanic club grooves, with a heavy emphasis on horror atmospheres and monster bass lines. Adopting the diabolical handle Belzebass, the team rose to prominence partly thanks to a lineup of well-received remixes, including tracks from their Freakz Me Out label-mates Cyberpunkers (whose horror Ep Shock we reviewed back in November). The devilish duo returns next week with a new unholy offering: the heavier, more polished three-track Ep Welcome to Hell, which is equal parts haunting, violent and strangely exhilarating. Majestic synth and organ chords herald the opening of “Black in Back” (that's not a typo, and this is not an AC/DC cover), which wastes no time before pushing the limits of buzzy,...

Despite a remarkable volume of cliched, unmemorable or otherwise awful offerings, 2013 was actually a fairly solid year for horror – especially if your tastes veer off the beaten path. While most mainstream fare ranged from passable (Evil Dead) to abominable (Texas Chainsaw 3D), alternative fare flourished, not merely offering some great, unique entertainment but introducing or establishing talent that promises to become the genre’s next great generation of creators.
While few of the films included on the list ultimately made my overall Top Ten list for the year – good as they were, competition from other films was enviably steep in 2013 – those I chose stood out or distinguished themselves, in full or in part, for offering something original, interesting, or even just particularly effective. In the realm of dark musical delights, 2013 has been quite a historic year: legends in their respective genres returned and/or reunited, while others marked the swan songs of their careers; iconic artists turned out some of their finest work, while some innovative up-and-comers set loose fresh and evil earworms on our collective brains. Honestly, it was damn near impossible for me to narrow the list down to just thirteen entries – a mere Top 10 was out of the question – and cutting names felt like chopping off my own extremities (which I'll admit would be an impressive journalistic statement, but could lead to unpleasant side effects I'd rather not deal with). Still, I found a way to make it work. Well... okay, I cheated, actually. More on that later. But for now, let's cycle back through 2013 – definitely a banner year for scary sounds! Special Mention: Post Tenebras Lux
Written and directed by Carlos Reygadas
Mexico, 2012
Mexican director Carlos Reygadas (Japón, Silent Light) seems inches away from producing his masterpiece. His latest, Post Tenebras Lux (the title is a Latin phrase meaning “after darkness, light”), opens with two of the most unforgettable, ominous images in recent memory. The first is a haunting sequence at dusk as Reygadas’s 2-year old daughter walks through a muddy landscape filled with farm animals and large dogs. As she wanders the field, darkness gradually falls and a thunderstorm moves in. The second scene follows an animated glowing-red demon gliding silently through the rooms of a dark house in the middle of the night. In addition to these two illustrious scenes, we are also treated to a heartbreaking A.A. meeting, a visit to a strange sex club and a man who commits suicide in the most unforgettable way.

Italian horror has had a marked imprint on the landscape of genre film, thanks mostly to Dario Argento and his gialli style films like Suspiria, Deep Red, and Tenebre. The Giallo genre is known, beyond its penchant for sadistic violence and creepy thrills, for its music. And, perhaps no band is more responsible for the Giallo boom than the Italian progressive rock band Goblin. The band’s soundtrack work is legendary, having developed the music that enveloped and made Dario Argento’s Suspiria, Deep Red, and Tenebre so exciting and intense. Goblin and Dario Argento go together like peanut butter and jelly, sex and slasher films, or Charlie Sheen and strippers.

October is finally upon us, and that means it's time to dig into our favorite Halloween mood music – whether it's horror movie soundtracks, spooky-themed bands or dark soundscapes – to add that extra something to your homemade haunt, costume party, game night, movie night, or whatever keeps your Jack O' Lantern lit. Depending on your taste, just about anything we've covered here in our music reviews would fit the bill – but as a confessed soundtrack junkie, nothing gets me in the spirit better than the vintage vibe of classic horror scores. That includes original soundtrack albums, of course, but there are also some electronic and prog-rock artists out there who harness that same vibe for their own works, offering a new spin on old school. I was recently introduced to an electronic musician who not only pays creative tribute to those classic movie grooves, but has found creative and fun ways...

Amity and American Cinematheque are partnering up for Beyond Fest, an inaugural international genre film festival, taking place from October 13th to October 27th at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. To celebrate the event, Goblin, the band behind many of Dario Argento’s classic giallo film scores, and George A. Romero’s Dawn Of The Dead, will be playing a live show with a set from these most iconic scores. But that’s not all. Afterwards, everyone in attendance will then be able to watch Dario Argento’s Deep Red (1975), in rare 35mm form. Wow. Update: Goblin’s first live show in La sold out practically immediately, and now a second show has been added (along with another screening of Deep Red), for October 23rd. Tickets are again going to be on sale at Brown Paper Tickets, on sale at 10 Am on Wednesday July 3rd. I suggest getting online soon...

Fans of European horror movies – especially from the '70s and '80s – are probably on an intimate basis with the Italian rock band Goblin. Their most famous and memorable works include the scores for George Romero's epic Dawn of the Dead and Dario Argento's 1977 classic Suspiria – one of the loudest, weirdest and most terrifying film soundtracks ever created. While Goblin has been active in various incarnations since their foundation in the mid-'70s, and core member Claudio Simonetti has played their music at Us shows with his side project Daemonia, Goblin's original co-founders – Simonetti and Maurizio Guarini – have never performed together in North America. But that's all changing this October, when they bring the full Goblin lineup to perform the entire Suspiria score live at the first Housecore Horror Film Festival in Austin, Texas. The brainchild of metal icon Phil Anselmo (Pantera) and bestselling true-crime author Corey Mitchell...

It’s no big secret I love horror films, but 2012 hasn’t been a great year. In my top ten, three films carry over from 2011, two won’t be released until 2013, two are animated and another isn’t much of a horror film. With that said, 2012 gave us Berberian Sound Studio and Cabin In The Woods, and for that, I am forever grateful. Here is a list of the 21 horror films from 2012 I liked best.

Berberian Sound Studio reminds us of the power of sound over the visual image, and can surely join the ranks of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation and Brian DePalma’s Blow Out as an absorbing appreciation of sound design. Most of us know rabid record collectors, but a rabid record collector who specializes in the '70s prog rock outfit Goblin - that's next level. Goblin is probably best known for creating the unforgettable musical accompaniments to Argento's films.
This month, Ian Zapczynski takes FEARnet on a tour of his over 600 strong LP, 7" and 12" collection. This man is serious about Goblin and all things related to the band.
The Collector: Ian Zapczynski
Location: About 30 minutes outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
What: Goblin. LPs, CDs, and all merchandise related to the band who is best known for their music for horror films. This includes records by other artists that members of Goblin performed on or produced, an aspect which makes my collection unique amongst the few other serious Goblin collectors. You haven't lived until you've paid $50+ for an LP that is absolutely impossible to listen to just because Maurizio Guarini played keyboards on one track.

Today, we enter the Final Four round of our Superhero Showdown — our ultra-mega-championship to decide which costumed crimefighter is the greatest superhero in comic book history. Today, we need you to vote in a match-up that, in many ways, defined the mainstream comic book industry for decades. In one corner: Superman, the original DC hero, a handsome image of All-American(-by-way-of-Krypton) invulnerability. In the other corner: Spider-Man, the defining Marvel hero-with-personal-problems, a creepy-cool image of urban adolescence run amok. They make ideal counterpoints. Superman flies over Metropolis, observing crime from on high like a candy-colored demi-god; Spider-Man swings through the tall shadows of Manhattan.

Sometimes the film going experience is greatly enhanced when you have little knowledge of the movie upon entering the theatre. Such was the case for the new film The Hunter. All I had seen was the poster which showed a grim, determined Willem Dafoe toting a high-powered rifle. Since he’s frequently been cast in villain roles ( he’s the Green Goblin for gosh sakes! ), I thought that perhaps he’s playing an assassin or hitman tracking his victim through the countryside. On the flip side, he may be a bounty hunter or lawman trying to bring in a fugitive from justice. Whichever it was, I was all set for a cat-and-mouse action thriller.
For the first few minutes it looks like we’re in for a classy hitman actioner ( like The Mechanic ). After we’re introduced to Martin David ( Dafoe ) soaking in the tub, listening to classical music in a swanky Paris hotel,...
