Celebrated Bengali singer-actress Ruma Guha Thakurta died at her residence here on Monday following old age-related problems, family sources said. She was 84.
Born Ruma Ghosh in Kolkata in 1934, she married legendary singer Kishore Kumar in 1951 and the couple's only child Amit Kumar was born next year. The couple divorced in 1958 and that year Guha Thakurta formed the Cyc with composer Salil Chowdhury and Ray.
Founder of the Calcutta Youth Choir (Cyc), which played a stellar role in popularising 'Gana sangeet' or mass songs in Bengal, she showcased her talent in a number of Hindi and Bengali movies working with celebrated directors like Satyajit Ray, Tapan Sinha, and Tarun Majumdar.
The choir rendered with aplomb the Bengali translations of popular mass songs from various languages. Their discs were lapped up by music lovers.

UK saw one of India’s legendary music personalities – Amit Kumar, son of the renowned Indian singer and actor Kishore Kumar and the Bengali singer and actress Ruma Guha Thakurta – perform at two sell-out concerts on22ndOctober 2016 at Logan Hall, London and 23rdOct 2016 at Dmh in Leicester for his tour: Yeh Shaam Mastani. He was joined by his younger brother Sumit Kumar, also an accomplished singer.
The concert was held in honour to celebrate the work and life of three of India’s biggest Legends: R. D Burman – Indian film score composer who is considered one of the seminal music directors of the Indian film industry; Kishore Kumar – the most successful playback singer of the Hindi film industry; and Rajesh Khanna – Bollywood’s first superstar. Amit and Sumit Kumar performed yesteryear hits such as Yeh Shaam Mastani, Zindagi Ka Safar, and many more, taking audiences on a walk down memory lane.

After working together in one of the most successful and loved films of 2012- Barfi, director Anurag Basu and actor Ranbir Kapoor will once again join hands to make a biopic on the life and times of legendary playback singer, actor, filmmaker Kishore Kumar. Though talks have been on since a while, it's believed that Ranbir has finally given his nod for this project to be produced by Utv. The actor will however begin working on this film after he finishes Abhinav Kashyap's Besharam. For the ambitious Kishore Kumar biopic, Ranbir will be required to gain around 12-15 kgs to look the part of the iconic singer. He will be playing Kishore from the age of 19 till 58. Basu is currently scripting the film with co-writer Soumik Sen. Kishore Kumar's son Amit Kumar is also guiding Basu through the project and Amit is likely to even sing a few songs in the film.
