Last year’s WGA Awards winners for best drama series and best comedy series, AMC’s Breaking Bad and ABC’s Modern Family, are back in full force this year, leading the list of TV nominees announced today. Breaking Bad landed five writing nominations — for best drama series as well as four of the six noms for individual drama episodes. Modern Family followed with four — best comedy series and three of the six episodic noms. The new series field, topped by Emmy winner Homeland last year, includes HBO’s Girls, Veep and The Newsroom, as well as Fox’s The Mindy Project and ABC’s Nashville. Girls snagged both best new series and comedy series nominations, the only new show to land multiple noms. Another freshman cable series, USA’s Political Animals, got a mention in the long-form category for Greg Berlanti’s pilot. The WGA Awards are set for...

Boardwalk Empire, Season 3, Episode 3, “Bone For Tuna”
Written by Chris Haddock
Directed by Jeremy Podeswa
Airs Sundays at 9pm (Et) on HBO
Top moment this week: watching Bobby Cannavale and Gretchen Mol in their first scene together. It’s like watching a Great White and a cobra face off. Two entirely different but equally deadly creatures confront each other for the first time. They eye each other for weaknesses. They size up the best place to bite. They retreat to consider their options. It’s like Animal Planet in period dress.
If Cannavale as Gyp Rosetti is ably filling the large boots recently and sadly vacated by William Forsythe as Manny Horvitz – just watch Cannavale’s eyes go dead when he thinks Nucky’s careless reference to trees implies he is an ape – the rest of the male characters are lagging behind in the interest stakes. Keeping up the tradition of jumping on renewals, HBO has renewed Boardwalk Empire for a fourth season. Things may have slowed mildly as the show works on getting its feet back under itself after some focus and cast changes (what with people getting whacked all the time), but that doesn’t bother HBO.
I imagine a good part of their theory here, and as I say, it’s a theory that isn’t new to them, is that viewers feel a lot more comfortable tuning in when they know there’s plenty more to come. It seems to be working.
What are your thoughts? Are you still as hooked on this show as you’ve always been? Is the new season delivering what you’d hoped?
Frankly, this whole gas station take over plotline seems to me like it needs to resolve in a hurry, but the show is still a lot of fun,...

Today, I'd like to talk about two TV series that I've taken the time to discover during this summer. First of all, since two fellow bloggers (Ivy and Blake) have talked about Six Feet Under, I naturally said to myself: why not give it a chance? Secondly, as for Intelligence, I was attracted to it, because I'm a fan of crime/espionage dramas.
Six Feet Under, season 1
The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that HBO has every right to have this slogan: "It's not television. It's HBO." Now that I've gone through the first season of this immortal TV series, I became a fan of it and I strongly recommend it if a little bit of humour and drama is what you need to be elated.
Nathaniel Fisher (Richard Jenkins), the director of the funeral home Fisher and Sons, lost his life in a car accident.

TORONTO -- The Hallmark Channel has re-upped the Canadian cop drama "Intelligence" for a second season, series distributors Daro Film Distribution and Thunderbird Films said Monday.
Monaco-based Daro Film and Vancouver-based Thunderbird Films said they extended their worldwide deal with Hallmark Channel for Season 2 of "Intelligence", from showrunner Chris Haddock ("The Handler").
The deal was unveiled by Pierre-Andre Rochat for Daro Film, Michael Shepard for Thunderbird and Mark Lawrence, Hallmark director of global acquisitions.
"Intelligence", which stars Ian Tracey as the head of a West Coast crime family and Klea Scott ("Minority Report") as head of a local crime unit, follows such other procedural dramas from Haddock as "Da Vinci's Inquest" and "Da Vinci's City Hall", which show a grittier side of Vancouver.

TORONTO -- Eschewing new U.S. series, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. on Tuesday kicked off the Canadian upfront presentations by unveiling nine homegrown series for the fall.
Canada's public broadcaster said its upcoming season will include Jonathan Rhys-Myers starrer "The Tudors", an Irish-Canadian miniseries co-production also for Showtime, and Canadian-made reality series "No Opportunity Wasted", hosted by Phil Keoghan.
Other fall highlights for the CBC include the homegrown family drama "Heartland", miniseries "St. Urbain's Horseman", based on the classic Mordechai Richler novel, and "Triple Sensation", a performance-themed reality series produced by Garth Drabinsky. Drabinsky faces an upcoming criminal trial in Canada for his role in the downfall of 1990s live theater producer Livent Inc.
The CBC also has scheduled documentary series "The Nature of Things -- Geologic Journey" and is bringing breakout hit "Little Mosque on the Prairie" back for a second season of 20 episodes.
Other returning series include Chris Haddock's crime drama "Intelligence" and reality series "Dragons' Den".
Kirstine Layfield, CBC executive director of network programming, said the public broadcaster's fall offerings will inevitably duke it out for viewers with the new and returning U.S.

TORONTO -- Canadian producers insist they risk becoming fee-for-work producers if the Canadian Television Fund forces them to cede the rights to programming they produce for domestic cable and satellite giants.
"Intellectual property rights are vital. Copyright belongs to creators -- it's a hard and fast principle for us. Nobody would be successful without ownership -- otherwise I'd be doing service work for Disney," Chris Haddock, president of Haddock Entertainment ("DaVinci's Inquest"), said at a Thursday press conference attended by fellow British Columbia producers.
The protest comes on the heels of rebel cablers Shaw Communications and Groupe Videotron backing down last month and resuming monthly payments to the Canadian Television Fund after Ottawa agreed to overhaul the main source of subsidies for Canadian independent producers.
Pierre Karl Peladeau, CEO of Groupe Videotron-parent Quebecor Media, in February proposed increasing the Quebec cable giant's investment in Canadian independent production, but only if his company could hold the copyright to content it financed.

Program Partners and Thunderbird Films are set to bring yet another Canadian series to U.S. audiences. The companies have acquired worldwide rights to the procedural drama Intelligence, extending their collaboration with executive producer Chris Haddock, creator of Da Vinci's Inquest, which airs in syndication in 98% of the U.S. Intelligence, set to debut in the fall on the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., centers on the third-generation head of a West Coast crime family who is constantly under surveillance by the police and the Organized Crime Unit, which is determined to bring him down. The offering details on Intelligence have not yet been set as Program Partners and Thunderbird Films are believed to be expecting to generate interest at all levels, including network, cable and syndication.
