Secrets & Lies star Brenda Blethyn and Arrow star Jimmy Akingbola will front a sitcom for British broadcaster ITV. The pair will star in six-part series Kate and Kolo from Flack producer Hat Trick.
Kate and Kolo, which launches next year, centers on a working-class woman who runs an old-fashioned café in a neglected seaside town and who develops a strong, if sometimes volatile, friendship with an asylum-seeking African doctor.
It is written by Outnumbered writers Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton.
Jimmy Mulville, managing director at Hat Trick Productions said, “ITV is the perfect home for Kate and Kolo, written by two of the country’s top writers and with two great actors like Brenda and Jimmy, it’s a wonderfully funny and sometimes touching comedy about real people coping with life at the sharp end.”
Saskia Schuster, ITV’s comedy controller, added: “Kate and Kolo will be a new sitcom...

Outnumbered is a British sitcom that aired its fifth and final season in 2014, but fans of the series will see a new one-off special for the series next year.
Andy Hamilton spoke about the special during an interview with Fubar radio, according to The Sun.
He said:
"We hope to visit the family for a kind of one-off. Me and Guy, on our wall, in our office, we have a list of ideas we are trying to work out. We’ve done a few Christmas specials, but you kind of disappear in a big gap of Christmas programming. We’re kind of inclined to do it somewhere else if we can. That’ll be a discussion me and Guy have to have between ourselves and then the BBC. We’re hoping to film it next year."

Robert Carlyle and Emma Thompson in The Legend Of Barney Thomson
This year's Scottish BAFTA nominations were announced today, and things are looking good for Robert Carlyle's debut film as a director, The Legend Of Barney Thomson. The bloody tale of an earnest hairdresser out of his depth, it opened the Edinburgh International Film Festival earlier this year and went on to enjoy a warm reception at the box office. What We Did on Our Holiday
Written by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin
Directed by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin
U.K., 2015
Were Bill Cosby’s name not synonymous with mud right now, What We Did on Our Holiday could be easily titled Kids Say the Darndest Things. Big names like Rosamund Pike and David Tennant headline the film, but it’s the kids who steal the show. Writer/directors Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin take their experience from running BBC’s Outnumbered and utilize the improvisational skills of youngsters Emilia Jones, Bobby Smalldridge and Harriet Turnbull to pair off against legend Billy Connolly to make a charming summer comedy.
Gordy MacLeod’s (Billy Connolly) seventy-fifth birthday is coming up, and Doug (Doug Tennant) and Abi (Rosamund Pike, far removed from her Oscar-nominated performance as Amy in Gone Girl, playing a loving mother of two) are taking their three children...

★★★★☆ The debut feature from BBC veterans Andy Hamilton and Guy Jerkin, What We Did on Our Holiday is one of 2014's most big-hearted, surprising and thoroughly likable films. While in many ways essentially the big screen version of an acclaimed, subtly developed sitcom - In this case, Outnumbered - it skips around the traps that befell the likes of The Inbetweeners (2011) or The Simpsons Movie (2007). Those films most resembled out of control episodes of their parent television shows, where jokes were allowed to repeat, fester and wear thin on even thinner story arcs. This feature uses allows the themes of the show to crystallise; the writers pushing the boundaries of the classic British family film.

It’s 10 p.m. in London, and Rosamund Pike has just roasted a chicken, finished the washing up, folded the laundry and tended to a wee sick one. Now she sits for a moment in her kitchen, spent but happy, her four-day-old baby son snoozing in his basket beside her.
The setting may be calm and pastoral, in keeping with Pike’s new life, but it’s sharply at odds with the actor we now know her to be. This year she delivered a career-making performance as Amy Dunne, the stunningly beautiful, dangerously secretive and cynically vicious wife in David Fincher’s “Gone Girl,...

With British sitcom Outnumbered, creators Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin hit on the wonderful idea of keeping their hilarious and often realistic portrayal of family life semi-imporovisational, with the adult actors working from the script while the children were given last minute instructions by the writers before each take. For their debut as a big screen directing duo, the pair carry the formula over with What We Did On Our Holiday, and while it's not entirely perfect, for the most part it works. This could have easily been an Outnumbered movie, but with that story told on the small screen, we get a new family, made of David Tennant's and Rosamund Pike's constantly battling Doug and Abi, and their three moppets who watch on distraught from the sidelines, unable to fully comprehend why their parents live in separate houses. When they travel to Scotland to celebrate Doug's ill...

David Tennant and Rosamund Pike play the put-upon parents of three kids in this feature-format development of Outnumbered
It’s impossible not to enjoy this big-hearted and sweet-natured British family movie from Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin – effectively a feature-format development of their smash-hit BBC TV comedy, Outnumbered, which pioneered semi-improvised dialogue from the children. It creates a terrifically ambitious (and unexpected) narrative with a tonne of sharp gags. I would have liked to see Hugh Dennis and Claire Skinner reprise their roles as the mum and dad, but because we have all seen their fictional children grow up on the small screen that is not really feasible. David Tennant and Rosamund Pike are Doug and Abi, the troubled parents of three boisterous kids: they’re heading up to Scotland for the 75th birthday of Doug’s unwell dad, Gordy (Billy Connolly), which means staying with Doug’s uptight brother,...

As the child stars of BBC One's Outnumbered grow older and thus less deserving of our attention, series creators Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin have come up with an elegant and surprising solution to what surely must be a high demand at BBC Films for their show to follow Mrs Brown and The Inbetweeners from small screen acclaim to big box office returns.
While we bade farewell to the Brockmans at the end of the 2014 series, Hamilton and Jenkin's début feature, What We Did On Our Holiday, looks for all the world to be re-fitting their dysfunctional family shtick for the big screen. That it actually turns out to be something more unexpected might be worth the price of admission alone.

Rosamund Pike is about to hit it big thanks to Gone Girl, but before that she'll be seen in What We Did On Our Holiday, an off-kilter family comedy from the creators of Outnumbered. With its story of a marriage under strain, media storm and dramatic mid-point twist, it could easily be paired up with David Fincher's thriller for a slightly eccentric double-bill.

Rosamund Pike might be poised to shoot into the stratosphere with David Fincher's Gone Girl, but before that she'll be seen opposite David Tennant in What We Did On Our Holiday.
The family comedy comes from Outnumbered creators Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton, and brings the spirit of the BBC sitcom to the big screen with Pike and Tennant playing parents taking their kids up to Scotland for grandpa Gordy's (Billy Connolly) birthday.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Pike revealed that it was Jenkin and Hamilton's script's ability to tap into the "magic of childhood" that convinced her to jump on board.
"You do start off on a story you think you've got a handle on, then it just goes to these extraordinary places," Pike said of the comedy, which surprises with a bittersweet blend of humour, warmth and tragedy.

Coming from Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkins, the creators of the the hit BBC series Outnumbered, What We Did On Our Holiday brings together a wealth of U.K. talent, including David Tennant, Rosamund Pike, Billy Connelly, and Celia Imrie, in a comedy which sees a couple (Tennant and Pike) finding their kids are their biggest problem when trying to keep a secret from the rest of their family. This looks like it could be fun, especially with a bunch of charming kids who look like they’re going to steal scene after scene. Combined with a decent “adult” cast including David Tennant, Billy Connolly and Rosamund Pike, What We Did On Our Holiday could be just what the doctor ordered to beat off the back to school blues. Written and directed by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin, the plot follows a family who travel to the Scottish Highlands for a birthday party and it soon becomes clear that when it comes to keeping a secret under wraps from the rest of the family, their children are their biggest liability. Released September 26th Ireland & UK...

Many know David Tennant for his tenure as "Doctor Who," the recent British drama series "Broadchurch" or small roles in films like Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. But now he's dabbling in some lighter fare with the family comedy What We Did on Our Holiday. Maybe it's just the presence of children and their British accents, but this looks adorably charming. Rosamund Pike is along for the ride as Tennant's wife when they take their three kids on a vacation to see their grandfather (Billy Connolly) in Scotland. At the very least, it's better than that Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good, Very Bad Day trailer. Watch! Over a decade on from playing a Bond girl, British actress Rosamund Pike is about to enter a whole new act of her career. Hot off acclaimed recent roles in the likes of "An Education" and "The World's End," Pike landed one of the most hotly sought-after parts around: the female lead in David Fincher's adaptation of best-selling thriller "Gone Girl," opposite Ben Affleck. It's easily the most high profile gig she's ever had and stands a good chance of attracting awards attention and vaulting her to a new level of stardom. But before that, she's got some lighter fare to deal with, as Pike is starring with "Doctor Who" and "Broadchurch" star David Tennant, and the legendary Billy Connolly, in new comedy "What We Did On Our Holiday." Written and directed by Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton, it details a harassed couple and their three children on a...

It's five series and out for Outnumbered - the popular sitcom came to an end tonight, with BBC One apparently closing the door on the Brockman family home for good.
But was final episode 'The Musical' - which saw Ben (Daniel Roche) face a crisis of confidence over his starring role in Spartacus - a fitting send-off or a limp climax?
Are you sorry to see Outnumbered go? Did it have another series or two in it yet? Should the show return for the odd Christmas special?
Or does Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin's comedy creation need a permanent rest? Did it lose its charm when the kids grew up?
Digital Spy wants your thoughts. Have your say on the Outnumbered finale and the show's future below.

Outnumbered's fifth and final series continues to deliver the goods. Here's Patrick's review of The Gap Year...

5.4 The Gap Year
With Stacey still in residence chez Brockman, Ben freezing whenever she reveals a new part of her anatomy, impressionable not-so-little Karen having bonding time with her dad’s godchild, Jake facing teenage problems and Sue and Pete endlessly worrying, it seemed like The Gap Year was simply a rehash of The Goddaughter. Fortunately, it wasn’t and like the rest of this series it was hilarious – and another case of Outnumbered embracing its future.
Last week I observed the young Australian’s penchant for dishing out bad advice to the Brockman offspring, wearing revealing clothing and walking in at inappropriate times. The Gap Year had Stacey’s tendencies turned up to eleven and the results were hilarious, climaxing in...

5.3 The Goddaughter
This last and regrettably final series of Outnumbered is just going from strength to strength. The Swimming Competition was a clear step up from The Hamster and The Goddaughter is another jewel in the Outnumbered crown; it’s up there with the likes of The Airport and The Restaurant.
The principle focus of this week was, of course, the titular godchild: Pete’s friend’s daughter, Stacey (played by The White Queen’s Emily Berrington). She flaunted around the Brockman household in towels, talking openly about upping her bra size and “dressing like a prostitute” as Sue so frankly put it. With the likes of Jake running around it seemed like he would be the obvious one to be caught in Stacey...

Review Patrick Sproull 6 Feb 2014 - 07:00
Patrick enjoys an episode of Outnumbered that's back on form. Here's his review of The Swimming Competition...
This review contains spoilers.
5.2 The Swimming Competition
After what can only be described as an underwhelming opening, Outnumbered continues this week with an episode that’s back on form. There are more laughs, stronger characterisation and – above all – more of a focal point, something last week’s subpar outing lacked.
There was a fair bit more action (in Outnumbered terms) this week as we saw Karen pumping herself full of confidence for a swimming gala, Jake inveighing against Pete and Sue’s parenting and Ben chatting to the family about psychology. I was curious as to where writers/directors Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton would take the character of Karen and it appears her gross self-assurance is actually escalating into arrogance and, subsequently, the alienation of other people her own age.

Outnumbered is set to return for a fifth series this year. Apart from a Christmas Special, the last full series was back in 2011 and the new series show just how much those Brockman kids have grown, including a new hair colour for Karen.
Beleaguered parents Pete (Hugh Dennis) and Sue (Claire Skinner) continue to battle through life both within and outside of their hectic household. Sue has a brand new office job and, predictably, struggles to maintain an aura of composure with her three growing offspring to contend with back home, while Pete is besieged by unreliable technologies.
Jake (played by 17 year old Tyger Drew-Honey) is sporting a new tattoo - of sorts - and is getting behind the wheel to learn to drive.
Tone-deaf Ben (played by the now 14 year old Daniel Roche) is set to take the lead in his school play - a musical version of Spartacus.

Star Trek icon William Shatner is caught up in a bizarre spat over a joke made by a panellist during his appearance as host of a British satirical TV news show.
The veteran actor took the presenter's chair on the BBC's Have I Got News for You on Friday, but a comment from a fellow guest has sparked a complaint from a member of the British Parliament (MP).
Referring to a recent story about the Olympic torch passing through the city of Truro in Cornwall, England, Shatner asked contestants, "What caused confusion in Truro?"
Funnyman Andy Hamilton replied, "Well, they're Cornish aren't they? They'll always be confused in Truro," but the remark has angered the MP for the region, Dan Rogerson.
He has lodged a complaint with the BBC and the Equalities and Human Rights Commission, and says, "Of course I like a joke as much as the next person, but on this occasion I can't help but feel that these comments wouldn't be tolerated if they were aimed at the Welsh, Scottish or indeed any other nationality or cultural minority."...

Veteran actor William Shatner has shown off his presenting skills by hosting a satirical TV news show in Britain.
The 81 year old took charge of Have I Got News for You, which was broadcast in the U.K. on Friday, and appeared from behind a screen to rapturous applause from the studio audience.
He joked with the celebrity panellists, broadcaster Charlie Brooker and comedian Andy Hamilton, about news topics from the week including the G8 summit, the Leveson Inquiry and the Olympic Torch relay.
During the show, Shatner sang along to Sir Elton John's hit Rocket Man and at one point team captain Paul Merton declared, "Can I just say what a joy and what a surreal experience it is having you on this show."
Shatner replied, "May I say, it's an out-of-body experience for me too!"...

Writer-directors Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin, the team behind the BBC's award-winning TV series Outnumbered, are developing a BBC Films-backed family comedy feature film.
The film is not a straight adaptation of the TV series and will not include the show’s cast, but it will feature some of the same themes and the same “techniques” as used in the semi-improvised Outnumbered by its young stars Tyger Drew-Honey, Daniel Roche and Ramona Marquez.
The comedy, with a working title of What We Did On Our Holiday will follow a family going through a tough time who undertake a road trip to Scotland for the grandfather’s 75th birthday but encounter chaos along the way. It will retain the same family structure as the series with two harassed parents trying to manage their three astute children.
Jenkin told Screen: “We’re taking the techniques from Outnumbered to make a distinctive...

The seventh series of the new Doctor Who will likely start airing in the autumn of 2012 and may run into the fiftieth anniversary year, 2013. News is just starting to emerge of who the writers and directors will be and so the countdown to series seven feels like it has begun.
The last series – as usual – delighted some and frustrated others. As one who was both frustrated and delighted, here are some of my thoughts about what show-runner Steven Moffat could do to make both devoted fans and casual viewers more delighted and less frustrated over the 13 episodes which are on their way.
1. Less of the “arc” plotting
Moffat has already indicated that following the series-long storyline of the Doctor’s apparent death and Amy and Rory’s baby last year, he intends to “throw the lever back the other way” this year, even to the point of not initially commissioning any two part stories.
