When director Chris McKay was making “Renfield” he turned to production designer Alec Hammond (“Donnie Darko”) to help deliver a fresh and updated take on the Dracula story, by taking “a big monster movie, rooting it in the classic movies, but subverting any expectations.”
The film starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his faithful sidekick Renfield, begins in 1931, in black-and-white. It was important, Hammond says, to set up Cage’s world in the historic context of harkening back to classic Dracula movies before jumping to the present day.
The Charity Hospital in New Orleans, which had been abandoned since Hurricane Katrina, was the perfect location for Hammond to set Dracula and Renfield’s modern-day lair.
Hammond says, “Its exterior looks like Dracula’s castle and so we maintain the silhouette from those classic movies. The history of the city was reflected in the structure, it looks like...

In “Renfield,” the title character, played by Nicholas Hoult, is desperate to end his centuries’ long codependent relationship with his master, the legendary vampire Count Dracula (Nicolas Cage). Director Chris McKay and writers Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ridley knew they needed to quickly establish the long history of Renfield and Dracula from the outset, and their method to do so led to one of the most delightfully entertaining and technically impressive openings in horror movie history — and they reached back into horror movie history to achieve it.
The prologue that begins “Renfield” takes us through the film’s core relationship by placing the actors in scenes from Tod Browning’s 1931 “Dracula,” the first of the classic Universal monster movies that inspired and influenced McKay.
The montage of classic moments in which Cage and Hoult take the place of Bela Lugosi and Dwight Frye is both an affectionate tribute and an effective means of exposition,...

New Orleans is a city of mystery and the supernatural. It’s filled with legends, history, and quite a lot of voodoo. And now you can add Renfield and Dracula to the mix.
Renfield hits theaters this April (and has a brand-new trailer coming out tomorrow) and stars Nicholas Hoult as Renfield and Nic Cage as his master, Dracula (read our Nicolas Cage interview here). It’s a monster of a relationship and it has spanned for over a hundred years. And now Renfield has had enough of bringing his master his dinner and then cleaning up after him.
Directed by Chris McKay (director of the underrated The Tomorrow War) from an idea by Robert Kirkman and written by Ryan Ridley, Renfield is a mix of classic Universal horror, silent film style, splatter, and comedy. The cast is top tier with Hoult and Cage joined by Ben Schwartz, Awkwafina, and Shohreh Aghdashloo.

Many weird-world genre bending millennial epics have already dated badly, but not Richard Kelly’s sci-fi / horror / satirical mind-trip about a guy given a glimpse of time travel in another dimension. The wit hasn’t faded and the menace hasn’t cooled, and the cast seems hipper than ever: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mary McDonnell, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wyle, Drew Barrymore, Katharine Ross. Two versions, two formats, no waiting.

Academy Award® winners Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, Richard Dreyfuss and Ernest Borgnine joined Bruce Willis (Sin City), Mary-Louis Parker (“Weeds”), Brian Cox (Rushmore) and Academy Award® nominee John Malkovich in Toronto as they began production of the big-screen adaptation Red based on the graphic novel of the same name by Warren Ellis. Its hard to hear about a graphic novel adaptation starring Willis along side a lot of A list actors and not think of Frank Miller’s Sin City — alas, the City casts a large shadow. Rumors of a City sequel make this an especially interesting project for Willis to take on. I hope that Red finds a unique onscreen style and feel to stand out in whats become a rather big graphic novel crowd. Production moves to New Orleans before wrapping in late March. Look for Red in theaters October 22, 2010 and watch Willis and Freeman in Lucky Number Slevin on DVD today!

Principal photography on the big screen adaptation of the DC Comics/Warren Ellis graphic novel Red has begun in Toronto. Summit Entertainment issued a press release, which includes details on the full cast/crew, and which follows below.
If you recall, I previously profiled the film on this blog, and also included a link to the full script, as well as a full review by Script Shadow. You can read that post Here.
The film stars Bruce Willis as a former black-ops CIA agent now living a quiet life in retirement, until the day a high-tech assassin shows up intent on killing him. Morgan Freeman co-stars. Initially, I hoped would he would be one of the two main characters (either the retired CIA agent, or the assassin); however, Freeman plays one of Willis’ former CIA pals, by the name of Marvin, who’s also retired and, according to Script Shadow’s review of the script,...

To answer the most obvious question right away: No, sadly, Richard Kelly’s The Box is not a return to the absorbingly strange glories of his knockout debut feature Donnie Darko. But nor is it as frustratingly out of control as his follow-up film Southland Tales either. In fact, it’s kind of a combination of both: opening and closing reels of compelling and dark personal drama surrounding more expansive, elaborate plotting that loses its grip.
Based on Richard Matheson’s 1970 short story “Button, Button,” The Box relocates the action to Virginia in 1976, where Arthur Lewis (James Marsden) is a Nasa technician and his wife Norma (Cameron Diaz, with a fetching drawl) teaches at the private school attended by their preteen son Walter (Sam Oz Stone). They’re a loving couple, and Arthur is even taking advantage of his skills and facility to create a prosthesis for Norma’s disfigured...

When "Donnie Darko," writer-director Richard Kelly's ominous sci-fi tale of teen angst, premiered at Sundance in 2001, its oddball ambitiousness was generally dismissed. When it was eventually picked up for distribution, it had a weak theatrical run, but grew into a massive cult hit on DVD, paving the way for a double-disc director's cut and Kelly's even bolder follow-up, "Southland Tales." Similarly panned at its 2006 Cannes premiere, that pitch-black sociopolitical (and yes, sci-fi) satire about the end of the world was edited down, but still polarized critics and audiences, which proves that you can't set out to make a cult classic -- only the test of time has that power, meaning the film might still find new life in years to come.
In a fascinating career leap, Kelly has taken his penchant for logic-bending science fiction from Indiewood to the Big Show, as Warner Bros. has produced "The Box," his...
