Cameron Crowe's upcoming film, "We Bought A Zoo," features the story of a single dad, played by Matt Damon, who, searching for a way to bring his fractured family back together, purchases a house out in the country. What he doesn't realize, at first, is that the house comes with an entire private zoo. Loosely based on a true story, the zoo ends up bringing the family closer together, and bringing Damon love, in the alluring form of Scarlett Johansson.
Unfortunately for Crowe, what he intended to be a heartwarming story is coming out at the worst possible time, as far as privately owned zoo public relations are concerned.
Following this week's sad story of Ohio's Muskingum County Animal Farm, the private zoo whose owner let over 50 animals free and running toward inevitable deaths at the hands of sniping state authorities, PETA has called on Crowe to attach warning...

Playwright Joseph Stein, responsible for turning a Yiddish short story into Fiddler On the Roof, has passed away at the age of 98. His career in the theater spanned more than 60 years. He supplied the book for Zorba, Mr. Wonderful and nearly a dozen musicals. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
Uwe Boll, for no discernable reason, has filmed Blubberella, which the official synopsis describes as “The first female fat superhero …She will kick major ass – with her major ass …”
In Washington, a group of high school football referees are facing a two game suspension and disqualification from working the state tournament because they wore pink whistles to a night of games for a breast cancer fundraiser. They were all donating their checks for the night for breast cancer research, but the state authority says they violated the rules by not asking permission to deviate from regulation black whistles.

Saturday was Carl Barks’s birthday. Had he not died in 2000 at the age of 99, he’d be 109. Anyone else who grew up loving Ducktales has him to thank: For nearly 65 years he was involved with Disney, most famously as author and illustrator of the “Duck” comic books, and among his creations are Gyro Gearloose, Gladstone Gander, Flintheart Glomgold, Magica DeSpell, the Beagle Boys, and, of course, Uncle $crooge.
Born in Merrill, Oregon, in 1901, Barks grew up on a small farm his parents owned and purportedly took up a number of odd jobs (that would later be reflected in Donald Duck’s vocational transcience) before deciding, on a whim, that he should go into cartooning, taking up a job at Disney in 1935. In 1942, he began his celebrated tenure working on Donald Duck comics, his first effort being the comic adaptation of an unproduced feature animation film showcasing Mickey, Goofy, and...

When Disney released the first six volumes of its Animation Collections it wasn’t surprising to see Mickey and the Beanstalk or The Prince and the Pauper headlining two of the releases. After all, they represented two of the crown jewels of Disney’s short films collection. What was alarming was the omission of Mickey’s Christmas Carol, the beautifully animated take on Dickens’ seminal classic using some of the best old time Disney characters. There are a precious few animated Christmas films worthy of annual viewing. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Merry Christmas Charlie Brown are two of them and Mickey’s Christmas Carol rounds out the trio.

The Disney Classic Short Films collection abounds with animation gems that have been wiling away the last few years. In the third installment of this collection, headlined by the more well-known The Prince and the Pauper, we get one the better animated features in the old Disney library. Accompanying the main cartoon we have five additional cartoons of starkly varied age, style and quality (more so than on the other sets).
The Prince and the Pauper (1990)
Directed by George Scribner, Written by Gerrit Graham and Sam Graham
Here we have one of the best Disney shorts to come of the pre-Pixar era. Created back in 1990, the animation here stands up to the test of time – in fact, seeing it for the first time in what must have been a decade, I was shocked at how beautiful it still looks. Based on the classic story by Mark Twain, it has all...
