Exclusive: Rainn Wilson (Weird: The Al Yankovic Story) and Lil Rel Howery (Get Out) have closed deals to exec produce and star in Code 3 — a buddy action-comedy from Wayfarer Studios and Circle of Confusion, which is heading into production in Los Angeles next month.
The film from director Christopher Leone (Parallels) follows a day-in-the-life of two overworked, underpaid and nearly burnt-out paramedics. One Emt is so burnt-out by the job that he is forcing himself to resign, though he first must embark on one last 24-hour shift to train his replacement. Everything that could happen on the job, from the mundane to the extreme, then happens on this final, exhilarating day.
The script for Code 3 is from former paramedic, Patrick Pianezza, and Leone. Wayfarer Studios has tapped Angela Cardon to oversee the project for the company and will serve as its sole financier. Producers are Justin Baldoni and Andrew Calof for Wayfarer,...

Biopics often provide audiences with a unique window into the lives of fascinating figures from all walks of life. However, little can prepare you for what awaits in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, a satire of a worn formula that offers something unique and strange for the genre. Eric Appel directs Daniel Radcliffe (“Weird Al” Yankovic), Evan Rachel Wood (Madonna), Rainn Wilson (Dr. Demento), and countless cameos for a twisted trip down memory lane. Few biopics are an extension of the subject at hand. However, in the case of Weird, the film gives new meaning to the concept of parody and keeps you laughing as it breaks all the rules.
We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Daniel Radcliffe, Evan Rachel Wood, and Eric Appel about the film and were delighted to learn more about their journey toward bringing the life and times of a legend to screens. During our time with Appel,...

Every Halloween, Robert George Pickett rises from the grave. (Figuratively.)
The song that made Pickett famous (three times over), “Monster Mash,” spikes to 40 times its regular view and search volume on YouTube every Halloween, and with good reason. It is a uniquely ripe piece of American cheese, a novelty hit that stands among the best of a decade packed with them, and Pickett’s life — and dogged attempts to keep grabbing the brass ring he glimpsed with the song — represent a uniquely American story.
Pickett was in born in Somerville, Massachusetts, in 1938, right in the middle of Universal Studios’ reign atop the horror movie industry.

“Under the Smogberry Trees”, the interview documentary about Barry Hansen, Aka Dr. Demento, has undergone a radical change in source and producer. Mr. Hansen’s representatives have reportedly seized control of the production from its creators, Meep Morp Studio, after a protracted series of legal saber-rattling and suspect behavior.
First started as a Kickstarter campaign in 2013, the project met its goals and the film had originally been planned for release this last August. But supporters of the film’s campaign received an email over the weekend from the studio reporting that Mr. Hansen and his company was now in control of the production, and would be responsible for the balance of all rewards, including the film itself.
A more detailed explanation at the production’s website went into more detail of the film’s travails.

Surrealist art-rock group The Fuxedos are known for going all-out with wild costumes, makeup and insane theatrics in their performances, which often employ horror and Grand Guignol elements to maximize the insanity. They've made memorable appearances on Comedy Central and The Dr. Demento Show, and shared billing with notables like Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh, industrial band Nitzer Ebb and experimental metallers Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. Fuxedos frontman Danny Shorago created and stars in the short film Mimsy, based around the track “The Jellybean Song” from the band's self-titled album. It's kind of hard to describe what goes on here, but suffice to say it's one of the most jaw-droppingly Wtf clips you'll see this year. The song and visuals are reminiscent of enigmatic art-rock unit The Residents, crossed with Mike Patton's notorious band Mr. Bungle... but that doesn't quite do this one justice. Enough talk. Press play! Mimsy (featuring "The...

Did we mention the clip is all a shameless plug for the Lifeline insurance settlement program and a fundraiser for the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association? Yes, that was the sound of Dr. Demento having a stroke from too much excitement.
The whole enterprise does beg the question: is there such a thing as something being Too campy? The answer is a resounding "No," so sit back, enjoy,...

The 2012 presidential candidate has gone off the deep end in defending the right to sell sex and drugs as personal liberty-and stretched libertarianism past the breaking point, writes Michael Medved.
How would you describe a perennial presidential candidate who insists in a televised debate that government has no more right to interfere with prostitution or heroin than it does to limit people's right to "practice their religion and say their prayers" ?
Related story on The Daily Beast: Osama Eulogies: Ayman Zawahiri and al Qaeda Vow Revenge
The phrase "crackpot" comes immediately to mind-and in any contemporary political dictionary that term would appear alongside a photograph of Congressman Ron Paul.
The Mad Doctor, who proudly consorts with 9/11 Truthers, announced his third race for the nation's highest office on Friday the 13th (appropriately enough) by declaring that if he were president he never would have authorized a lethal strike against Osama bin Laden.

"Derailroaded: Inside the Mind of Larry "Wild Man" Fischer" is coming to DVD, January 25, 2011.
"...This shocking and sensitive 86-minute journey through the thunderstorms of the mind of paranoid-schizophrenic Larry "Wild Man" Fischer follows his discordant encounters in the music business. Institutionalized at 16 after attacking his mother with a knife, Fischer wandered the mean streets of L.A. singing his totally unique brand of songs for 10¢ to passersby.
"Discovered by Frank Zappa, with whom he cut his first record album, Fischer became an underground club and concert favorite, earning him the title of "godfather of outsider music." Over the course of 40 years, he appeared on national television ('Rowan & Martin's Laugh-in') and the Top 50 music charts in England, was the subject of his own comic book, was the first artist to be recorded on Rhino Records, and sang a duet with the late Rosemary Clooney..."

Plus will Fright Night be the best looking movie ever, Cyndi Lauper explains leather pants, and Kevin Alejandro tames Lafayette.
I’m not trying to be mean here, but the thought of Jennifer Love Hewitt being cast as Wonder Woman is ridiculous, and I hope she gets help for these delusions.
A 4th generation family butcher shop in Spain has installed a vending machine for meat and prepared meals. I’m sure it’s fine, but I can’t see walking up to a machine at 2am and buying a fillet mignon.
This list of tropes about gay representation and stories in comics is fairly universal to comics, movies, and television programs. It should be required reading before you’re allowed to write for mass media. There’s a warning for mature content, but moderately graphic language is all I saw.
Steve Zahn is taking a role in Knight of Badassdom opposite Peter Dinklage.

That’s right. It’s here. The first ever parody trailer about one of the most popular parody songwriters ever. "Weird Al" Yankovic has had a remarkable career, crafting song parodies, working in the comedy world and selling millions of albums and downloads over nearly three decades. It's about time he got a biopic — or at least a trailer for a fake one. The always-reliable folks at Funny or Die have crafted just such a thing: A trailer for a biopic called "Weird" that tracks the rise and fictional fall of one of America's most treasured parodists.
The video stars Aaron Paul (of "Breaking Bad" and "Big Love" fame) as Yankovic. He plays Al as a cocksure rock star who refuses to take no for an answer and finds fame with songs like "Eat It" and "Like a Surgeon" only to spiral downward with the help of booze. The rest of the eclectic cast is pretty remarkable, including Gary Cole ("Office Space") as his father and Mary Steenburgen as his mom.

So many people, including our own Peter Hall, are professing their desire for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story to actually happen that I just had to respond with a genuine Pitch of the Day related to the popular new Funny or Die video before an ill-advised Facebook campaign kicks off. Actually, so many of Yankovic's fans on Facebook seem to think the movie is real, so maybe they'd be too confused if such a campaign existed.
Honestly, I don't know why I haven't thought of the idea of a "Weird Al" biopic before. Perhaps the part of my brain that conceives of these bad yet timely film ideas has been waiting for the polka-loving parodist to die? Someone should make this. Why remake something when we could have Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) play Weird Al Yankovic. Apparently Weird Al had this whole other life we weren't aware of.
