David Harewood is a distinguished British actor with a career spanning stage and screen. From portraying the Martian Manhunter in “Supergirl” to the steely David Estes in “Homeland,” Harewood has consistently delivered powerful performances. But beyond his acting chops, Harewood has recently made the news with his stance on a highly sensitive topic: blackface.
A still from Supergirl
Blackface, the act of darkening one’s skin to impersonate a black person, has a long and offensive history rooted in racist caricature. Harewood’s latest statement seems to have found no problem with blackface because “the name of the game is acting”.

Update: After “Homeland’s” David Harewood told The Guardian that actors should be able to “Black up” for roles, but warned “it’d better be fucking good,” the actor clarified in a statement to Variety, “I don’t support or condone Blackface. My own documentary on the subject can be found on the BBC website. It is a grotesque distortion of race and should always be condemned.”
Previously: Speaking to The Guardian, Harewood, who also serves as president of prestigious British drama school the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, said: “We’re at this strange point in the profession where people go: ‘Oh, you can’t play that role because you’re not disabled, or you can’t play that because you’re not really from there.’ The name of the game is acting.”
He added, “Yes, we’ve got to be representative, but I do think we have to be careful.

Homeland star David Harewood has said he is worried about the creep of identity politics in acting and argued that white performers should be able to “black up.”
In an interview with The Guardian to mark his appointment as president of British drama school Rada, Harewood made the case for controversial casting decisions on the proviso that performers deliver.
“We’re at this strange point in the profession where people go: ‘Oh, you can’t play that role because you’re not disabled, or you can’t play that because you’re not really from there.’ The name of the game is acting,” he said.

‘I was only able to go on stage hammered’: David Harewood on acting, racism and his new role at Rada
He had barely started his career when abuse left him mentally ill. But he went on to phenomenal success – and has just been made president of the UK’s leading drama school
This is the first time David Harewood has stepped through the doors of Rada’s London headquarters since he became its president in mid-February, and he’s immediately struck by flashbacks of his time as a student here. “Stunning memories,” he says. “Memories of my audition, the paintings … and that staircase will always be memorable because you walk in and go: ‘Oh my God, I’m at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art!’ It’s very evocative.”
Harewood, 58, is the first person of colour to lead Rada, and he follows in the footsteps of such luminaries as Kenneth Branagh, Richard Attenborough, Princess Diana and John Gielgud. It is the most prestigious of acting schools – some would say the...

Alan Wake 2 is an incredibly good-looking game. It shows how much work developer Remedy Entertainment put into this title. One thing that fans appreciated even more than its visuals was its story. This game is a prime example of how a narrative survival horror game should be presented to gamers. Juggling with two separate characters and still maintaining that fear factor can definitely be challenging.
Maybe that’s why it received universal critical acclaim upon its launch. It even ended up winning a bunch of awards. Remedy is pretty well known for making these kinds of games. Well-written, fun to play, and insanely good to look at, they have been leaders in making such complete packages. Now, it appears they are leading the way in yet another manner.

The year 2023 turned out to be a good one for Remedy. The credit for this goes to the release of Alan Wake 2. It was one of the most-awaited titles of last year. We got to see the sequel of Alan Wake almost after waiting for thirteen long years. The game was a success at launch and didn’t disappoint us.

Thousands of stars including Sarah Paulson, Chelsea Handler, Christian Slater, Sandra Oh, Daveed Diggs, Pedro Pascal and Kal Penn have signed the letter, which is addressed to the SAG-AFTRA Negotiating Committee.
“Back in June, before we went on strike, a large group of members signed an open letter telling our leaders that we would rather go on strike than take a bad deal. Oscar Wilde is known as one of the greatest wits in literary history. But he has brought some delightful eeriness, too, with works like The Picture of Dorian Gray and more. This month, one of his finest combinations of the two, the 1887 short story “The Canterville Ghost”, will arrive in animated form on the big screen. Now, we have a clip from The Canterville Ghost courtesy of Blue Fox Entertainment and Shout! Studios that, like the movie itself, is aimed at the whole family.
In the clip, host Hiram Otis (David Harewood) shows off “the new wonder of the modern world” – electricity – to his dazzled guests, only to be pranked by those channeling the spirit of Sir Simon de Canterville (Stephen Fry), who soon commandeers the spook….

Oscar Wilde’s short story is the basis for this energetic family cartoon, with a spirited ghost voiced by Stephen Fry and a brief visit from confrere Hugh Laurie
Here is a sprightly and good-natured pre-Halloween animation, based on the 1887 short story by Oscar Wilde; in vocal terms it reunites Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, though not for a double-act exactly – and it should be said right away that Laurie really isn’t in it much.
At the end of the 19th century, wealthy American Hiram Otis (David Harewood) and his family take possession of an English stately home: Canterville Chase, hoping to install a new-fangled thing called “electricity”. They’ve got it for a bargain price, because all the other owners have been scared away by the resident ghost, Sir Simon Canterville, played with genial aplomb by Fry. He now turns the frighteners on these wretched colonials, only to...

Emerging from a multi-year alliance between Shout! Studios and Blue Fox, the deal sets the film for a strategic rollout across multiple platforms, beginning with a theatrical launch timed for Halloween.
A Stephen Fry-led reimagining of the same-name short story by Oscar Wilde that screened as an Official Selection of the 2023 Annecy Animation Film Festival, The Canterville Ghost tells the story of a modern American family that moves to their recently purchased country home, Canterville Chase in England, only to find it is haunted by a ghost. Effectively, Sir Simon de Canterville (Fry) has been haunting the grounds of Canterville Chase successfully for over 300 years, but he meets his match when he tries to scare out the new arrivals.

“Like it or not there is an onus on actors,” said Mank star Tom Burke of the idea of global stars taking on the Green Rider unveiled earlier today, which will empower artists to add clauses to their contracts that work towards an environmental culture shift.
“We have been afforded an inordinate amount of power,” added the actor whose past credits include Strike and The Musketeers and who played Orson Welles in Mank. “I don’t want to start policing anyone on set but to know this is the sort of thing that can be talked about is realistic.”
Burke added that there has “probably been an anxiety” around actors openly discussing these environmental issues in the past.
Opening the Edinburgh TV Festival, Burke said actors he speaks to are “concerned about people taking the p*ss” when it comes to over-stressing environmental issues on set.

The contracts would include requesting productions put sustainable practices in place
Over 100 high-profile actors, including Mark Rylance, Hayley Atwell, David Harewood and Bill Nighy, have signed their support for Equity’s ‘Green Rider’ plan, which aims to boost sustainability in UK film and TV production.
The proposed Green Rider can be added to actors’ contracts in order to state their own sustainability commitments, and to negotiate bolder sustainability standards on set before accepting a job.
