While the industry as a whole felt more downs than ups this year, horror films continued to be a consistent attraction overall. While the studio hits were not quite as splashy as they were 2022, the year saw the birth of new franchises (M3GAN, The Pope’s Exorcist, Talk to Me, Thanksgiving), the revitalization of the reliable favorites (Evil Dead Rise, Insidious: The Red Door, The Nun II), and reminded us just how essential writers, actors, and the all the creatives both in front of the camera and behind it are to making any of this not only work, but sell.
As for the big horror trend this year, controversy was thy name. While there were a few entries critics and audiences were able to rally around, most of them drew conflicting opinions — which this list is surely proof of.

Rob Savage’s The Boogeyman terrified King himself who even labelled it “extraordinary”. While the original story has been reimagined many times, often in undelightful manners, Rob’s version seems to be taking the world by storm. In the first 5-10 minutes of the film, it feels like we’re following Stephen’s story pretty accurately but then the tables take a very distinct turn. Of course, if the film had to be based solely on the source material, it would’ve been a really short one! The popcorn horror has a significant amount of psychological elements that make it more emotionally effective. This is definitely a big step forward for Rob, who began his impressive career with a found footage horror called Host. With a massive expansion of the original story, writers Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman along with Rob switch the lens to the psychiatrist Will Harper...

The following contains major spoilers for The Boogeyman (2023).
Early Stephen King short stories have a particular kind of grit. Often called Vintage King, the twenty dark tales in the author’s first collection, Night Shift, vary wildly in subject matter and tone but nearly all convey a distinct nihilism and end with a shocking stinger or devastating twist. When adapting these nasty nightmares for the big screen, many directors amplify the unapologetic cruelty while others take the edge off of bleak endings by adding a more uplifting tone or reversing the cynical message with an outright happy ending.
Rob Savage’s 2023 adaptation of “The Boogeyman” falls somewhere in between. Working from a script co-written by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, and Mark Heyman, Savage maintains the story’s morbid tone by expanding the mental health element of the narrative, but presents a more hopeful ending by centering the story on the...

Plot: A grieving family is haunted by an evil entity that preys on the suffering of others.
Review: While all of the headlines out of this year’s CinemaCon were about Warner Bros showing The Flash to the assembled press and exhibitors, it wasn’t the only screening of a movie the studios were hot on. Disney used the event to give us all a look at The Boogeyman, a horror flick by director Rob Savage, which was initially set for Hulu. The movie turned out so well and was received so positively at test screenings the studio pivoted to a theatrical release, given how well recent movies that nearly went to streaming have done, including Smile and the studio’s own Barbarian.

The Boogeyman, directed by Rob Savage (Host) with a screenplay by Scott Beck & Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place, 65) and Mark Heyman (Black Swan), draws from Stephen King‘s 1973 short story of the same title. Rather than presenting a straightforward adaptation of King’s text, however, The Boogeyman uses its narrative as the film’s inciting event, acting as a spiritual sequel. While it never expands the mythology or story in any substantial way, this film adaptation is offset by Savage’s steadfast commitment to scares and a tremendous cast.

Most people remember what it felt like to be a small child, when you were awake in the middle of the night, with the lights off, when every tiny sound scraped at the hairs on the back of your neck. There was some kind of man in your bedroom, and you were afraid because that man probably knew how to boogey.
“The Boogeyman” is a very common childhood nightmare. He’s the reason we checked under our beds at night and made our parents triple check the closet. In 1973, Stephen King wrote a short story called “The Boogeyman” about a man who visits a therapist and explains that a monster has killed all of his children, one by one. It’s a scary story, and there’s a reason why fifty years later filmmakers like Rob Savage (“Host”) are still interested in bringing it to the big screen.

At one point, in a much more optimistic past, Kevin Costner's William Harper from "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" was being kicked around for his own standalone film. But considering that film was a flop, it's unlikely to happen. Still, the combination of older dudes kicking ass is one that remains intriguing to studios and audiences (hence "Taken 3"), and next month you'll have a couple of options. Liam Neeson will throw down in "Non-Stop," and Costner is going to get things done in "3 Days To Kill." And so to remind you it's coming, a new trailer has arrived to sell the rather absurd premise that allows Costner to kick some vague, European butt. He plays a former special agent, who is dying from a terminal disease, and is trying to do right by his family. But when he's offered a potentially life saving drug in exchange for taking down some bad dudes,...

‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit’ review: Kenneth Branagh thriller ‘plays everything too close to the middle’ (photo: Chris Pine in ‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit’) It’s been 12 years since CIA analyst Jack Ryan made his last motion picture appearance. The movie was The Sum of All Fears, those fears being fully realized by virtue of Ben Affleck playing Ryan. If Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit proves anything, it’s that in the ensuing dozen years, CIA analysts, spies, and various black windbreaker-sporting government underlings have learned to type very fast. Indeed, there’s a lot of typing in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, a lot of button-mashing on laptops and cell phones and a lot of barking new directives in response to the button mashing on laptops and cell phones. The lightning fast retrieval of bad guy info might be a boon to the American agents entrusted with stopping a Russian plot to sink the U.

Jack Ryan : Shadow Recruit is making it’s way to theaters today. Recently, Wamg attended a press conference where stars Chris Pine and Kevin Costner joined actor/director Kenneth Branagh, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, and producer Mace Neufeld to discuss the film. Check it out below.
Based on the CIA analyst created by espionage master Tom Clancy, Jack Ryan : Shadow Recruit is a blistering action thriller that follows Ryan (Chris Pine, “Star Trek”) from his quiet double life as a veteran-turned-Wall Street executive to his all-out initiation as a hunted American agent on the trail of a massive terrorist plot in Moscow.
Ryan appears to be just another New York executive to his friends and loved ones, but his enlistment into the CIA secretly goes back years. He was brought in as a brainy Ph.D. who crunches global data – but when Ryan ferrets out a meticulously planned scheme to collapse the U.

What am I to do when I can’t seem to find a James Bond, Mission: Impossible, or Jason Bourne movie to watch? I suppose the answer is to go see Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, a plainly obvious cash-grab reboot of the diminishingly successful series of films based off of author Tom Clancy’s Cold War hero that your grandfather inevitably loves.
After three mildly successful films in the early 90s—with Alec Baldwin as Ryan in The Hunt for Red October and Harrison Ford as Ryan in both Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger—an attempt was made to reboot the series in 2002 with Ben Affleck in The Sum of All Fears, and though it was financially successful, a mix of Affleck’s fledgling career at the time and the very real stigma of 9/11 still affecting America all but swiftly killed the franchise. To say that Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit could be worse is both true and damning with the faintest of praise. This reboot of the famous character created by the late Tom Clancy is almost aggressively generic, an uninspired action thriller that aims to get only the most basic job done—reintroducing a character who is the Everymanniest Everyman there ever Everymanned—and does just that. Chris Pine is decent in the title role, but just about any actor his age could play the part with the same level of engagement and excitement.

Tom Clancy, the master of the American military thriller, died in October at the age of 66 but left behind a library of terrific espionage novels, several of which featured CIA analyst Jack Ryan. The nicest thing one can say about Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, the fifth big-screen vehicle featuring the titular hero and the first with Chris Pine in the role, is that it does not tarnish the character’s legacy. However, it is not the riveting franchise starter that Paramount may have wanted it to be. Instead, Kenneth Branagh’s film works best as a slender if diverting piece of entertainment, curt and focused on delivering a few big thrills and nothing more.
We open on September 11, 2001, as the title character watches the Twin Towers collapse on television. Ryan soon abandons the student life at the London School of Economics and heads to Afghanistan to serve as a Marine.

London, England. Kevin Costner has powers. Eerie powers. It's October 2012 and a group of reporters is sitting huddle in a pub across the street from both London's Liverpool Station and the building where "Jack Ryan" (later to be "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit") is shooting a scene. Because it's meant to be Moscow, it's appropriate how chilly it is, but the steady rain has left us unable to witness any filming with our own eyes. Costner, who plays Jack Ryan's CIA mentor William Harper, isn't in the scene and he wasn't supposed to be on set. However, graciously...

Sneak Peek director Kenneth Branagh's upcoming action feature "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit", based on the character 'Jack Ryan' created by author Tom Clancy. It is the fifth film in the "Jack Ryan" film series and a reboot departing from previous installments. Unlike previous films in the franchise, it is not an adaptation of a particular Clancy novel but instead an original story conceived by screenwriter Hossein Amini:

Last night I got the opportunity to go to Paramount in midtown to peep seventeen minutes of footage of Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. Those of you who follow me on twitter know that Black Ops, Spies, and tradecraft is my cup of tea so I was very excited to see what they had to show. We were previewed two scenes from the upcoming film.
Now I been tracking the development of this project for years. I remember when screenwriter Adam Cozad sold this project as a hot spec script called Dubai to producer Lozrenzo Dibonaventura back in 2007. Then I remember the setting being moved from Dubai to Moscow, then a bunch of rewrites ensued and the project is now the basis of the new Jack Ryan reboot.
Last night Jack Ryan himself Chris Pine was in attendance to introduce the footage.

We’re two-thirds of the way through October, and Gravity has just had its third straight week atop the box office, which I think qualifies it as succeeding beyond anyone’s expectations. In the meantime, this week’s installment of Trailer Trashin’ takes a look at this Christmas’ upcoming thriller Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.
Premise: Jack Ryan (Chris Pine), a young CIA analyst, uncovers a Russian plot to crash the U.S. economy with a terrorist attack.
My take: When I heard the news that author Tom Clancy had passed away at the beginning of October, I was greatly saddened. For more than a decade, I’ve been a big fan of Clancy’s books, and I still consider him among the highest echelon of thriller writers. But while I love his books, I’ve had a much more mixed relationship with the movies based on his Jack Ryan series.

Based on the character at the center of a barrage of Tom Clancy books, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit stars Star Trek Into Darkness's Chris Pine as the titular covert CIA analyst charged with putting a stop to a devious Russian plot to devastate the U.S. economy. Appearing opposite Pine are Anna Karenina's Keira Knightley as Jack's wife Cathy, Man of Steel's Kevin Costner as his handler William Harper, and Thor director Kenneth Branagh, who aside from playing growling Russian Viktor Cherevin also helms this feature. You can see each of them in action above, and be sure to note the English ingénue's nifty American accent and the weird way Costner says the word "anonymous." Before Shadow Recruit, Jack Ryan has previously appeared in four other feature films, played by three other actors. The first was Alec Baldwin in 1990's The Hunt for Red October. 1992 brought the...

The sad news of Tom Clancy's passing came to us at the end of last week, but his legacy is still alive with the first trailer for Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, based on the author's most famous characters, previously brought to the big screen by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck. Directed by Kenneth Branagh, pulling double duty as the movie's villain Viktor Cherevin, this original story serves as a reboot for the character, charting his early days as a CIA analyst and his relationship with his mentor William Harper (Kevin Costner). The trailer shows off a much more action oriented take on the character, not really giving us a taste of political intrigue that made the likes of Patriot Games or The Sum of All Fears so entertaining, but I think there is enough here to pique peoples interest. Synopsis: In a story taking place prior to the original Jack Ryan stories,...
